    Here,
we have an amazon echo with about a week.
set up the app and all that.
Don't have a paid spotify account.

Would that be why Alexa won't play specific songs or bands?
I ask it to play, I dunno, "Nirnava.. but instead she responds with "Playing Nirvana radio from Spotify"

And of course its NOT actual Nirvana....

Or we ask it to Baby Shark for the kids.. and we get Baby Shark Radio...

    So, what gives?

Also, can anyone get Alexa to play Newstalk ?
As in the irish radio station.. 107FM ...

I enbled that Irish Radio Player... but all she'll play off that is RTE 1.
I can say "Alexa play Today FM" and she does it just fine.. but Newstalk? No way.. I have heard about 50 different newstalks from across the globe at this stage.. but NOT the irish one...

    All useful advice greatly appreciated...

If you have no service for music, where do you expect the echo to get the song?

You need to setup services by the app for them to work. Then setup voice recognition maybe if there's multiple users.

Radio is a basic free service but again you need to install the channels up want to use as the standard ones will be generic based on region

There is a forum on boards that people share out a family spotify subscription, it works out at €30 for the year for your own one.
    Well worth it.

    EDIT: Here it is:

Alexa. Play newstalk on irish radio player.
Check the skill in the app to see what way commands should be phrased.

For radio the free TuneIn app is built into all Echo devices

So for Newstalk you need to specify "Alexa Play Newstalk from/on TuneIn"

A bit of setup at the start will save you a lot of bother later. TuneIN is great for radio stations, easiest to setup on a actual computer though than on your phone. Add some favourites to you own profile and Alexa will have a better chance of switching on the right station.

You do need a paid Spotify account to play specific songs - although on mine it now defaults to Amazon Music if I ask for a song or band and don't specify "on Spotify" for each request.

Use the app to make Spotify the default music service.
