Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If there is a follow through with that - there is going to be a MASSIVE drop in their readership of their sites.

    HUGE!

Add to that, the adverts on their pages will get FAR less clicks!

    Double loss...

Yeah I agree, whatever about people copying & pasting stories, surely they should be encouraging linking!

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

If this comes to pass I will go onto the newspapers website, find the comment section and keep posting links. Links to competing newspapers. Boards.ie maybe too?

So then everyone will link to thejournal.ie instead, which rewrites most Newspaper stories just enough that there is no breach of Copyright.

    No harm done.

Good luck to them invoicing boards for posting links.

Why don't they just set up a subscription model so that articles can't be linked.

This is one MASSIVE hole in their thinking also.

In their daftness of thinking, they will have to chase after Google for daft huge amounts if only for the fact that google posts literally thousands of possible links to their websites “without asking first”. Not only this, but googles cache’ing mechanisms could be violating their copyright.

Good luck to them chasing after Google.
The court case legal fees alone could possibly wipe the Irish end of things out! LOL

    Apparently not.

As one person said on a solicitor company website (HERE):
Let them. Let them insist that anybody linking to them has to acquire a license.

They’ve not thought this through really have they?

No link -> no google, bing, no organic traffic, no facebook traffic, no twitter traffic, no trafic, period.

    “Poof”
    “What was that?”
“That was the Irish newspapers vanishing off the internet”
    “Good riddance”

Bizarre that all the newspapers agreed to it. A link to their site is free publicity for them, free advertising for them and easy way to get hits on their site!
I can understand them being against c&p stories, but links?? That just doesn't make sense!

If that's what they want to do, they should start by closing down their websites.

I don't see how a link is anything more than saying "see page 36 of the Times"

I would actually go further if they do this and boycott their physical papers too!
Sick of this kind of money grabbing, anti Internet nonsense!

They should have a chat with an SEO about what this would result in and wonder why their sites were free in the first place.

They follow up with this then their traffic vanishes and they won't appear high on Google searches, leaving their advertising revenue and popularity a joke.

Anyways, plenty of other (and better) news media online to read from as well as Irish news sites to clean up in revenue with people linking them instead.

i just thought of this they charge google/bing

    google/bing...etc remove them,

people stop visiting their sites because they no longer pop up when you google them...

    oopsie a useless hidden website,

the alternative they leave the links on google, but don't charge google for them, could other sites like boards.ie appeal based on 'if google are allowed link for free why aren't we?'.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭Solair

The fewer links to your site, the lower the Google ranking.

Their sites will cease to even come up in searches eventually!

The Internet is all about links.
If you don't understand hyperlinks, stick to publishing stories on the legacy dead tree system!

If you publish online, you're linkable to!

Put your content behind a pay wall and stop moaning about people giving you free advertising if you don't want to be linked!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 391 ✭✭anhedonia

Jesus, they'll actually be part of the darkweb.

Like those sites that have mad URLs only accessible via the TOR network that sell drugs and weapons and ****. I mean its worth the effort if you're looking for drugs and weapons, but 3rd rate news stories? i'll pass.

Looking at the situation, realistically with the amount of daily links alone in Facebook, Twitter and Google, the court cases from those alone up to todays date, could possibly drag on for decades.

Just to prove the stupidity of this, Google, Microsoft, et., should hide search results linking to all the newspapers listed.

Make it public, and all the advertisers on those sites would jump ship immediately.

Give them a week with a 95% reduction in traffic and see what happens.
