We lost home advantage in the first match of the campaign v Offaly which was played in Thurles. The Galway match is at home but no indication of whether it'll be Fraher or Walsh Park yet afaik

Excellent news, I was under the impression that it was for two matches. GAA website says Walsh Park.

Notionally our match against Galway is a home fixture for us. But, as we are being forced to play this one at a neutral venue because we were bold last year does anyone know where it'll be on? Trying to get myself organised as it looks like being the only league match I'll get to this year.

The penalty for "being bold" last year only applied to the Offaly game. The Galway game will be in Walsh Park.

Not the first time the Examiner have said Shane instead of Stephen in this graphic.

Waterford -2 in the bookies is bet of the weekend! Dublin wont be within 5 points of us.

Dublin are notoriously hard to beat in parnell park. Maybe the wins against offaly , laois and carlow have gone to your head but id expect this game to be very much 50/50.

Poor Stephen and Shane, they gets mixed up the whole time, even on the cúl heroes they had the same picture for both names.

Could easily of done a triple header in Croke Park tomorrow night (Ladies football, Hurling and Football) and would be easily accessible plus give the supporters a day out in a quality venue but it is what it is and the Dublin hurlers prefer Parnell Park apparently

They have a serious record down through the years there and rarely lose there , croke park would make more sense though.

Not sure if they would prefer parnell over croker though , probably better for them that it is as they are in transition mode and Waterford flying

Beating 3 Mcdongh cup sides is not flying to an extent

This will be out first real challenge and i think they will very tough.

Will be interesting to see how Callum Lyons goes in his first league start. 1-4 and the full forward line looking very settled the last few games. Early in the season but is this the likely full forward line for the championship? Quite possibly. Good to see Mark O Brien get another start, he's been quitely impressive this year so far. DJ could do with a good performance, put in a great shift v Offaly but not so great since. Also good to see more solid game time for Austin and Barron to help them up to to full match performancr levels. Jack Prendergast has been very impressive in the last two games, hope it continues

Was it 2004 Paul O'Brien scored 3-1 up in Parnell park?

Yep, 3-2 in fact. On a day Waterford scored 6-17. The following year in the championship we scored 4-17 against them in Walsh Park, Dublin only got 1-3 with their goal coming right at the end of the game. Dublin a very different proposition these days though

Yeah I remember that 2005 nothing game in Walsh park, Saturday evening in the p!ssing rain. That was when they had a round robin group for the AI qualifiers

Firstly, I agree that this is a much more significant challenge than the first three games.

But it's not just that we beat 3 JMD teams, but the manner and margin by which we did so that bestows the term "flying" on the team. Look at Galway as a counter example of how a top tier team who haven't fully warmed up fare against tier 2 teams.

Which approach is better only time will tell. I'd say have the intensity coming from Waterford is due to the gulf in ability, buy the other half is from players trying to claim some right to their position.

Colm Roche did well in today's Fitzgibbon Cup final, scoring three points in a row in a remarkable five-minute burst in the middle of the first half. He also put in a good second half, especially acting as an outlet for clearances for the UCC goalkeeper. He showed a bit of pace which I had not previously associated with him.

David Prendergast played at full back for MIC but it was a thankless task due to UCC's complete outfield dominance which meant the MIC full backs were being pulled all over the place by good incoming ball.

Dara Lynch of Passage was a late substitute for UCC.

MIC never got going in what was a very disappointing final. It will have been a particularly galling result for Patrick and John Curran whose DCU team were beaten by a last minute penalty by UCC in the semi-final. They both missed that game due to injury and it is probable that DCU would have won if they had been on board.

Big Waterford crowd in Parnell Park.

    Waterford still evens,
    minus 2 points.

Wouldn’t be inclined to go after that. Dublin at Parnell with a big point to prove after Galway performance. We have Aussie still feeling his way back in to this season, Callum Lyons making his first start and haven’t played a top team yet.
I hope you are right though!!

    Yeah decent Waterford support here

Small compact stadium with a very tight pitch

  • Registered Users Posts: 37,878 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Not at races today scoreline is flattering us at HT and lucky to be only down by 2pts

  • Registered Users Posts: 37,878 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Balls would of been some way too win it but sadly Stephen Bennett's penalty saved in the last puck of the game.

Overall Dublin the better team, very hard pitch too play hurling on I reckon.

Tbh Scoreline flattered us a bit but hopefully we learn from today's mistakes

Great result for the footballers down in Wexford Park. Won 5-4- 0-12

    Any good performances PTH2009?
Sounded like Shane Bennett was back in good form today?
How did Aussie and Prunty play?

    Prunty done well
Aussie ok but still selfish going for those long ranged points and putting them miles wide.

Barron made a big mistake causing the Dublin goal

2 Bennett's played well. Moran ok

Half forwards struggled, don't think DJ foran has what it takes very slow

Didn’t see that one coming ; would have been daylight robbery had Waterford snatched a victory at the end. Thought Lyons did well plus Barron and Shane Bennett ; Aussie still struggling (is he carrying an injury) and disappointing that Foran (for a big man) is not able to win ball in the air.

We won't finish 1st in the group even if we beat Galway next week. Dublin should easily beat Laois and would move above us on H2H if we both ended on 8pts. A Galway win/draw against us will give them top spot no matter the result in the Dublin game

That means we will be in Group A for the 2020 league

    1 1st placed team 1A
    2 4th placed team 1A
    3 Winner of the 5th/6th 1A playoff
    4 2nd placed team 1B
    5 3rd placed team 1B
    6 Div 2A winner

Waterford were very poor today, esp in the first half. Too much of the short passes to a guy 10 yards away and then after 3 or 4 of them, a long aimless ball that Dublin backs nearly always won. Daft stuff. Dublin gave us 2 goals in the first half and we were really flattered by the scoreline as should have been well behind.

Clearly management don't trust the half forwards to win any high ball from the way they work puck outs. Nolan has a long puck out though so if we had someone to win ball, we could go places. Bennetts were good when they combined.

Second half was better and when we played direct ball or ran at Dublin, we did cause trouble but did it too rarely. The Dublin goal was caused by overplaying by the backs to move the ball up the field.

To me, Glesson is totally disinterested in playing or at least gives that impression. Made one great run to prevent a Dublin goal but apart from that, far too often drove aimless shots for points that went well wide.

You would have to say that for the first real test of the year, it wouldn't give you much hope for the rest of 2019. They're playing a system that is ponderous when they play the short passing game but they can't play long balls as they won't win any of them on today's viewing.

Finally, some of the ref's decisions today were laughable for both sides. Way behind play at times and missed some clear fouls and gave some daft decisions at times.
