Home being repossessed due to illness. What can we do?

    Our house is being repossessed and we have two cats and need to find somewhere to rent in north county Dublin, we're honest people in our 50's who fell on hard times due to illness.
    Is it possible to find a place ????

    Rena, in your our mind / with your partner, you need to set out roughly what you are looking for. For example, what location makes sense with regard to work, shopping, study, doctors, friends, etc.? What transport is available? What can you afford, without causing difficulty for yourselves? And so on. You need to decide on a prperty size / price that matches your needs and abilities.

    If you will be receiving rent allowance, you need to talk to the community welfare officer, usually located in the local health centre: http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/Find_a_Service/LHO/NorthDublin/HealthCentres/ There are certain limits you need to take into account: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/supplementary_welfare_schemes/rent_supplement.html

    If you look at myhome.ie and daft.ie you will get a good idea of what is available. Asking prices are likely to be higher than actual prices by 10-20%, so feel free to haggle a little.

    Most landlords are slow to accept animals, so you need to broach the matter carefully.

    I dont' know your transport suituation or whether you need to be near services in the city but maybe a place out in the countryside or in on of the larger county towns would suit you. It would be a great deal cheaper rent wise and as they have a smaller supply of tenants, they may be able to compromise with regards the cats, maybe if you pay a slightly larger deposit in case of any damage they do. You should get a three bed terraced/semi detached house for maybe 500-600 euro per month in some county towns depending on the town and the amount of rental potential in it. If you don't have own transport, maybe somewhere along one of the major train routes would be handy.

    if a permenent place isnt found in time,dont rehome the cats just yet- think about asking a cat loving friend for help-taking them in until have found a suitable place,or find out if any local cat fostering schemes are available- like we have over here.
