+1 on Old School House for food. Park in the Castle shopping centre - it's free after 7pm and you just walk (about 100 metres) along the river path.

Anyone know is the Cock Tavern serving food since they re-opened? That used to be good before they were closed.

Definitely agree on the OSH - always great food. The Bar menu is great, portions sizes are very generous.

The restaurant is also fantastic, quite small and definitely a need to book well in advance. But the bar food usually does me.

The Cock has started serving food but the menu is quite limited at the moment. Apparently it will broaden but I think there might be still some work going on on the kitchen facilities, at least that's what I was told.

Had a family meal in Hogs and heifers and almost everyone was delighted with their meals.

The pulled pork burger is atrocious and the fish is very small. Aside from that, everyone else was happy.

Service was brilliant too. Much better than before

is it still pricey or have they come down abit? was only there once 2 years ago and thought while the food was good it was pricey

I didnt find it expensive. I generally compare restaurant prices by two things - margerrita pizza and their basic burger.

Me and my brother got the 'feast' - rib eye, ribs, half chicken, pulled pork burger, chips, onion rings - €45 between us. That was the most expensive thing in the group

Have been out and about a bit the past few months due to family birthdays.

There is a place called Sagarmatha Kitchen in Swords, down near the Castle on Main st, it's Nepalese, we've eaten there twice and both times the food has been enjoyable, I've discovered a taste for spicy food, and enjoy it there :)

Then there's a new thai called pok pok on the main street, fairly basic, but I had ramen noodle soup there recently and it was superb, incredibly fresh.

It was my birthday this weekend, and so I had tapas in bon appetit in Malahide yesterday which was fab, and on the recommendation of a friend, we tried the fish shack in Malahide today, and it was delicious, definitely going back, great food, superb service, and a great atmosphere.

Sagarmatha is amazing and also have great take away deals and their take away is delish too. Have ate in it a few times and its got a lovely and extensive menu. Decor is not great, think it's still the same as what was in dandelion previously but I wouldn't really care given the food is so good and it's great value.

Only thing is it is never really busy so not sure that It'll last... Unfortunately.

New restaurant about to open in Rush. The "Joyous Garden" at the Mill (where Sapphires used to be before it moved down the town).

That's an oriental sounding name, and a friend of mine said he saw an advert where they were looking for a chef who specialises in Cantonese food.

Glad to see it opening, as the location is reasonably handy for me, although I would have preferred a Steak House or something more European, as we've a few Asian options, whereas the Harbour Bar is the only real place for steaks, burgers, fish, etc and that is completely the opposite end of the town.

Glad to hear that you had a good experience in the Brick House.
We've been a couple of times & were less than impressed.

Tried to find the harbour a few weeks ago with no success :)

If you come into Skerries from Lusk, take the left under the railway bridge & go straight until you come to the monument by the Bus Bar on Strand St. Take the left here, the road swings around to the right & you are on the harbour.

Had a takeaway from the Riverside Chinese in River Valley last night just for a change, slightly out of my way but I'm always willing to travel for good food.

Won't be using them again, it was shocking; rice was just a congealed lump and the chips were either a reheat from the previous day or they just overdo them as a matter of course.

The two main courses were very poor, the curry sauce was jelly like and the thai green was about as thai as a certain mr trump. I had ordered through just-eat, so don't know whether they reduce the quality of the food because they're not getting the full price on orders or if the food is always this standard.

Are there any good Chinese takeaways in Swords any more? We had been going to Swords Garden for years, but we've had a succession of bad meals from it lately. Would really like to try somewhere different.

I've been a few times and while the food was good, the service was overly 'fussy' and invasive - you know where it takes a waitress 10 mins to place some cutlery and napkins on a table and where they make numerous unnecessary journeys over and back to the table throughout the meal.

Perhaps it's just me but I always feel like shaking people who work slowly!

Agree with you on the change to Indian, the Shagun art of spice in Applewood is excellent. The Chinese's in Swords have all gone really downhill, I will travel to the Mekong in Santry because it is well worth the travel as the food is always good.

Any recommendations for an Indian take away in the swords area?

Also, any dishes in particular you would recommend?

Sagarmatha kitchen and indie spice are the main (only?) ones and both very nice.

I personally think Indian food has a greater variety (in Ireland) thank Chinese take aways.

It really depends on what kind of dish you tend to like and how Spicy you like your food. Himalayan curry is a nice one on Sagarmatha and isn't one of the main Indian dishes he'll find in most Indian places (such as korma, madras, rogan Josh etc)

If only! Both times we were there we found the service to be slow & patchy.

The last time we had place mats with food on them from previous diners. Also, the quality of the food wasn't great. I had wings & steak & Mrs B had 'fancy' fish & chips. All are bog standard fare that should be easy to serve well. Each dish was quite poor.

I don't have the dosh these days to give much benefit of the doubt when it comes to eating out. After being let down a second time - enough was enough. Pity - great venue with super views for a romantic evening out.

That's very disappointing, the food there is usually very good.

I find Chinese takeaways are never consistently good, they seem to go through phases of being good or bad.

I find Indie Spice really good. You can get takeaway from the restaurant, but the menu at Indie At Home is much broader. My favourites are chicken bhuna and Murgh Shashlik - a dish that comes in two containers. One is chicken and veg that have been cooked on a skewer, and the other is a sauce full of amazing vegetables. The meat is quite spicy but the rest is not.

On the subject of takeaways in Swords, Sanuk Thai is amazing :)

I'll put in a good word for Shagun Art of Spice in Applewood again and recommend their chicken saag, which is a spinach curry. The have a good deal on marvin.ie 20% off when you spend €25 or more. Their onion bhaji's are delish.

Glad it's not just me either. Hate the long silence waiting to resume what you were talking about while the waitress/waiter places cutlery on your table like they were sticks of dynamite ready to explode.
My other favourite is when they wait for you to stuff a large forkfull of food into your mouth and then pounce from nowhere to ask if everythings ok?

Re the brickroom, the other half likes the food but I could take it or leave it. Been a few times. Would usually pick it when the town looks busy as it's the most likely place to get a table without waiting which says a lot.

So Fratellis has been replaced by Nhu Y which is a Vietnamese restaurant offering healthy options.

I think it is gone. Went a few times, owner has another place in the city which he said had always been thriving.

That location is terrible for a restaurant in Swords. And while you will get a decent footfall in the city, a place that is so cramped and doesn't serve alcohol (although you can BYOB), is never going to do well

I think theres a curse on that building! Plenty of competition around the town has weathered the hard times yet that location has seen Nhu Y (what the hell kind of name is that lol) Fratellis, Mint Leaf, Dowlers, all in the space of a couple of years.

There was an Indian before that as well - very nice but didn't last. Adds to curse possibility.

I liked Dowlers, they did a lovely steak on the stone.

I've no idea why so many places there fail, but I'd put money on the new place being gone in a few months.

Went to Empoli this week after not being there for a few months, they've a new early bird menu which is good value.
I'd fillet steak and it was very tasty

It hasn't helped that they had boarded up shops either side for the last 8/9 years. I saw some effort going into the shop fronts on main street this week.with the castle redevelopment work started let's hope future businesses there have a bit more chance to thrive and there is a bounce for the main street. Considering how many 10s of thousands live around, it should be doing better.
