Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm gonna give caffeine a go. Lasted three days last year. Aiming for a week this time (serious habit)

What are the good folks of AH giving up for Lent this year?

Remember in primary school you'd say "I'm giving up homework" and it was absolute comedy gold.

You should try 40 days of not being so deeply pessimistic and misanthropic. Such unrelenting bleakness must be tiring.

As Leonard Cohen once said, ‘there is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in’.

Drink, fags, and nice food. Maybe coffee too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,731 ✭✭✭jam_mac_jam

Nothing. As I don't believe in it.

Good custom though, its a good idea to deny yourself something once in a while but I won't be.

Nothing specific but definitely increasing exercise as the days get longer and weather improves.

So giving up being a lazyhole using winter as my excuse.

I gave up catholicism 20 years ago and I'm still off it.

    That's dedication!

Think I'll throw junk food and social media to the list, become the most virtuous person on the face of the planet. For about a day and a half.

    Giving up being polite :)

In all seriousness though, not that I believe in any of it but, same as a previous poster, try get out for a walk/jog now that the evenings are brighter. And actually having breakfast.

Had a big bowl of porridge every morning for about a week and a half, another for lunch then my dinner in the evening and the weight started to come off quick enough.
Might try it again for lent

I’m thinking of giving up posting on Boards. Either that or give up the drink.

It’s the kid version of Dad Jokes (which I secretly kind of love. When my father or father-in-law opens their mouth and I know a Dad JokeTM is a-coming, I am all ears).

Speaking of ears, theres a three for the price of two deal on hearing aids in Specsavers at the moment.
It's not going very well , sure who has three ears.

    I'm very erm...what's that word...bacchanalian?
Giving things up for Lent and new year resolutions and dry January and all that kind of thing doesn't enter my mind at all. It would be nice commit to taking up jogging and not having pizza for months. But gawd. It wouldn't make me happy.

The last time I gave something up for lent I was probably 7.

Over the following 33 years I havent abstained and nothing has happened to me as a result so Im gonna continue as it would be terrible to break a good record like that

Was going to give up social media for the month... But my wife reminded me that my birthday is during Lent, and it would be very rude not to acknowledge the friends and family etc that will wish me happy birthday .... Online !

So ... Now I guess probably do the chocolate thing !

Turn off posts on your timeline and then they can’t. It’s fake as **** anyway.

I'm doing a pretty tough one, let's see how long it lasts :D
No biscuits, crisps, chocolate, ice-cream and all the good things in life. Will try and limit takeaway coffee to once a week, if I can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,050 ✭✭✭✭cena

crisps and sweets. going to miss the crisps

I've been thinking about this for a while. I haven't given up anything for Lent in years and usually did extra things instead, like visiting a local nursing home, going to mass mid week etc. But this year I think I'll try giving up my morning biscuits with my coffee as well, because we had a tough year and things came good recently, so it would be more in Thanksgiving than penance.
