Clare/Cork Minor footballers on furing the week in Ennis. Cork have been weak at this grade for a good while, and apparently our two best players are out so might be a chance of a Clare victory.

Clare will be bringing in a good few of the U21 team this year so you might have the scenario where a few lads will be facing into their first championship game having only played against the likes of Kildare and Westmeath. Thats a serious baptism of fire IMO. I don't think challenge games really compensate, a lot of teams dont go full out in those games
Yes i agree deisedude...these lads will have no idea what hit them if they face into any of the big teams. These games in division 2 for the clare lads are only challenges really and they will have to keep their heads and not get carried away. All they have to do is look at the kind of hurling being played in div 1. These div 1 matches are the most intensive brilliant matches that i have seen in the league in years. The cork/tipp game was a great example of this. Some excellent hurling and the cork players reaction after winning was like they had one the all ireland semi final. This shows how teams are beginning to take the league a bit more seriously. However its hard to tell if this intensity in the league will be a good or bad thing for these teams. Will they gain momentum and confidence or will they suffer from fatigue during the championship leaving the door open for a fitter team like clare to progress beyond them???? only time will tell i think but overall the difference in class between div 1 and div 2 is massive!

I wouldnt be so sure about that mate. The whole process of choosing and training the best minors in clare was an absolute shambles this year. Due to management problems trials and training for the clare minors did not start until well after the christmas holidays. Therefore only one trial was held in order for a team to be picked with the managers not knowing or not having seen before the vast majority of the players that tryed out. Naturally enough the selection process was a disgrace leaving some of the best talent in the county unnoticed and sent home. It is impossible to choose the best possible team in the county based on a flimsy game played at one trial. However weak cork are, clare are weaker trust me!

Clare 4-10 Waterford 1-06. Very disappointing overall, we were only 2 behind at half time.

Well it has turned out to be a very disappointing start to the year for Clare GAA. Kilmurry-Ibrickane lose the final, the footballers narrowly miss out on NFL promotion despite a great season and the hurlers lose the final and hopes of promotion.

However, I will take positives from where I see them.

The footballers had a good season only conceding 1 goal in the league. Next year they should be striving to break the lock and get promoted. More importantly, they should now be hungry for competition in Munster this summer. Here's hoping they prepare well for Waterford!

The hurlers.. well there are quite a few positives. Younger players have come up against squads with experience in senior inter county competition. They are not learning from playing the likes of Galway, Cork, Kilkenny and Tipp though. However, the squad is being developed. The Long Term Player Development module seems to be in place and is working well. The squad are fitter and stronger than last year so they are developing quite well physically. Skill and experience need development. Next year they should get promotion. The main thing is that Ger O'Loughlin is given 3 years to develop this squad GRADUALY. Too many expect too much, too soon.

Here's to the future.. Munster is only a month away, don't rule us out entirely;)

The footballers face Waterford tomorrow in the Munster SFC Quarter Final. They will be eager to get revenge on Waterford after the League campaign ending in such a disappointing manner. Kick off is at 3pm in Dungarvan. Here's hoping the lads get a win, however close it may be..

The Clare senior hurlers lost to Tipperary on Thursday evening in a low key challenge match, with the final score being 1-16 to 1-15. Gerry O'Grady has been forced to leave the panel after his ankle inury returning. James McInerney is a very serious injury concern right now while doubt remains over Nicky O'Connell, Alan Markham and Domhnaill O'Donovan. These are worrying developments, but we will keep hope nonetheless :pac:

    Waterford 1-10 Clare 0-9

Well Clare are not out of contention for Munster and it looks very unlikely we will progress from that. A season that looked so good with the League being a good one until Limerick and Waterford, is now esentially over. Very disappointing and cannot be good for the teams confidence.

2 weeks time the lads on the hurling squad step up to the Deise..

Looking forward to Inter County hurling.. yes.

Moaning about being in Div 2 or 4 wont help the teams move forward. Supporting them will. So yes I'm looking forward to seeing them in action again.:)

Division 2 should be very interesting next year, 5 or so teams all of who will be legitimately looking for the one promotion spot. Clare are the best team in the league by a decent bit imo but considering ye are so young and inexperienced both on the sideline and on the pitch I have a feeling a less talented Limerick side led by O'Grady might sneak the spot, rather like Wexford last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,084 ✭✭✭eroo

I agree with you Orizio, but I feel that we will have that extra drive to not go through a 3rd year in Div 2.

Seanie Mac played a blinder again as usual.

They'll kill him down in Cratloe, if they get their hands on him.:D

Cant recall anything too controversial,i was behind the aldi goal so may have missed some decisions given up the other end,do you think seanie gave some controversial ones to crusheen?

do you reckon seanie was given the final due to the hard year he is enduring off the field??;):D

I'm not a big Seanie fan either but he was alright today. Cratloe can have 0 complaints. The better team won with Cratloe not helping themselves along the way. They were 3 points down with a few mins to go and had 2 chances to put the ball over the bar to bring it back to 1, instead they went for goal on each occasion and this cost them dearly in the end.

Clare football manager Michael McDermott is looking into the possibility of enlisting the services of a number of Dublin-based players under the GAA's parentage rule.

As a county which hasn't won a senior provincial football title in the last 10 years, Clare can avail of the rule which could see recent Dublin panellists, Shane McGrath, who plays with Thomas Davis, and Kilmacud Crokes' Pat Burke, link up with the Bannermen next year.

The former Kilmurry-Ibrickane boss is also looking at Na Fianna brothers Aidan and Brian Downes as well as St. Brigid's David O'Connor.

McDermott's native county of Cavan availed of the parentage rule this year by recruiting highly-rated St. Oliver Plunkett's/Eoghan Ruadh forward Gareth 'Nesty' Smith.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,005 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

That would be a very good move for us, but I honestly think we have enough of footballers in the county to put something together, I'm not saying we're at the top table by any means, but it wouldn't take much to get us to the latter stages of the championship depending on draws of course.

Talent is there no doubt, need the Kilmurray lads like the Hickey brothers and Enda Coughlan back next year.Gordon Kelly,Gary Brennan and David Tubridy are top players

John Maughan brought in a great self belief and team ethic in the late 80s/early 90s, we need someone like this again :)

What do you mean we need them back next year? i stand corrected but All the players youve mentioned were available to The management,(if the management choose to pick them) when most needed,A few of them were missing while KIB were in the club championship but Clare had played and beaten wicklow & leitrim london and kilkenny that i can remember without the KIB lads.

Clare were beaten by waterford, limerick and offaly when it mattered most, i attended some of these games last year and how clare beat leitrim and wicklow is beyond me........ massive strokes of luck in those games put clare top of the league for a period and put a gloss on our league position. The game v offaly was one clare could have won but didnt....

As for clare management looking for talent in the Dublin area..... Cant see The county board paying any newcomers milage...... the gravy train is full lads,no room for new ppl;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,379 ✭✭✭Gael85

i was referring to players KIB need back playing next year and meant to say David Tubridy,Gordon Kelly and Gary Brennan were top players that would make any team in the country. From what I heard the Coughlan and the Hickeys didnt train for a couple before championship so didnt feature against Waterford or Offaly.Darren Hickey was Munster club player of the year and Shane Hickey and enda Coughlan 2 of the most consistent players in club football over the last 5 years.clare need these lads committed next year.

what players would you call up user friendly?Colm Dillon(Doonbeg)had a good campaign this year, would like see him back in Clare set up

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,483 ✭✭✭User Friendly

What players would i call up myself?? mmmhh now that you put it like that:D a bit more difficult than just nit picking at players that another poster suggests.

I wonder has all the Hype gone to young Noel downes head? f--k me anytime i picked up the clare ppl last year the reporters were creaming themselves at his performances.I know he had a groin injury earlier in the year but if he was fit he could be an addition. Then again He would want to play for clare. Playing football for KIB is priority for these lads imo.Last year _?__?___?___ turned up for clares initial training camps, got the gear,i saw 1 or 2 named in matchday programmes but they never came back to the set up.

Gordon kelly gives everything for the cause when playing, his brother greame gives everything also. Jease i cant think of anyone that hasnt already been called up,but thats the key to getting promotion, getting players who will give it 100% from the start of the season.

indeed. joe kernan would be my first choice
there are munster titles there to be won definately
i'm not saying we'd go any further really, but a few munster titles would bring pride back to the county

2nd choice would be to take a gamble on liam mchale

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,483 ✭✭✭User Friendly

Liam machale?????????? sur hes part of the set up already.

If the galway co board cant pay for big joe and his entourage, then clare wont be able.Thats the reason he resigned from Galway, the county board couldnt sustain the expenses.
Hes just a one trick pony in my view:eek::D

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,005 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

I don't think any experienced manager would be interested in the Clare job, I don't think the county board would stump up the expenses either after Paudie :)

Personally I would go back to a Maughan type manager, an eager young manager from outside who will bring the players together

Now there lies the problem................ A hell of a lot of players in clare wont commit to the county...... its not worth the effort, sorry but i dont blame them either,Training hard in january for Div 4 league in February and march? no thanks.

Now in saying this....... i honestly admire the players who do make the effort and commit to playing for our county.

Yeah, I'd agree, 1 of the biggest obstacles to all teams in Clare is getting the dressing room right, we've all heard stories of teams in the past refusing to pass the ball to other players because of of silly rivalry, when we've gotten a manager in place to get rid of this we have had some good periods (hurling and football). Get someone in and give them 5 years to build things up, target getting to division 2 or something, if the players see structure and a target they will play. We also have some good players coming up underage

the new players on Clare panel.are Mick Ahern-Meath,Niall Browne-Kildare,Declan O'Reilly-Cavan and David O'Connor-Dublin.Last year they had Barry Toner-Armagh and Scott Kinnevan-Mayo on panel
