Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Out for a walk, saw a large bird of prey flying around the Famine memorial. Came across this dead raptor then. Should I report this somewhere in case there's some conservation program etc.?

Interesting...there was an alleged Goshawk reported in Corkagh one or 2 days ago...this could be either that or a sparrowhawk, but it looks big.

Do you happen to have any more pics?

I've a couple of the dead one but couldn't snap the larger one flying. It took off as soon as you got within 50 feet of it.

The larger bird seemed to have a distinct white band on it's tail feathers.

Thanks a lot - I am checking with some friends...there is mention of a Buzzard, but in my view the tail is too "barred" for it to be one.

There is consensus that it's a Buzzard. The barred tail threw me off a bit.

Definitely a Buzzard. Only needs to be reported if there's a suspicion of it having been illegally killed, or potentially died of bird flu. It looks like it has been there a while so not easy to confirm if either was the case, but if you find any more dead birds there make sure to report them.

These are the Dept of Ag hotline numbers for Avian Flu: Avian Influenza Helpline: 076 106 4403 (Outside of Office hours: 1850 200 456).

And this is to report to NPWS and Gardai as potential wildlife crime:
