Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A few people fined and reported in the newspapers/media would do wonders for improving compliance.

also known to not work very well, i know people that were arrested and prosecuted, named and shamed, and theyre still involved in illegal activities

Maybe so but it might deter others from doing so.

I'm not bothered about them. I'm just saying that if people are seen to be fined named and shamed then there will be more compliance.

Wake me up when it's all over.

generally leads to more complex and dysfunctional behaviors, which ultimately costs everyone more in the long run

Can keep repeating your radius then, I know loads doing that!

You can but it's very boring :) I have a nice hilly 20 - 25km route I can do but it's very boring to keep repeating it, especially if ordinarily you go out a lot.
Haven't been out on the bike myself since 5km came back in but realistically for my route with no races on the horizon I'm not going to cycle past my estate and then go round for a second lap. On a weekend I could go cycle empty rural roads on my own where I'm unlikely to meet anyone or I could go for a run to a local busy park via busy footpaths.
See lots and lots of people breaking it on Strava. Up to them, I can't be bothered turbo sessions and running does me.

Guards need to be uniform on what they do. Lots of Garda checkpoints waving cyclists through even in groups while turning cars around. Sending mixed messages is unhelpful.

I live near enough 2 reasonably popular tourist spots and both have been virtually dead last 2 days, hopefully it will keep up now and we can get this virus back under control

    Waterford is mentioned here https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/29-people-fined-e100-for-breaking-5km-travel-restrictions-1064660.html
Waterford city: Male stopped walking on the street, said he had been out for food and then to see friends on the other side of the city — no reasonable excuse.

Mad that the Guards have time to be stopping people walking on the road, id say there are a few power trippers amongst that cohart. There are a lot more pressing rules being broken like companies taking the absolute p!ss out of their status of essential just to get staff in, despite risk to their health. You also have house parties going on every day of the week and plenty of folk still not wearing masks.
Thats where their collective energies should be focused.

Restrictions apply to all, but expect some to not adere to them, by placing such restrictions, and virtually no investment into dealing with rising anxieties and stresses due to these restrictions, expect an increase in dysfunctional and risky behaviours such as increased consumption of alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, dangerous driving, domestic violence, suicides, attempted suicides, suicidal ideation, hospitalisations etc etc etc......

People can travel more than 5km from home to buy food in shops or collect takeaway orders but it must be within reason and within the “vicinity” of a person’s home.
“So the rules are very clear - you’re to stay within the 5km (radius of home) for exercise. But if you need to get food, whether it’s dropping into the shops to get smaller items, whether it’s doing a bigger shop or even if it’s getting a takeaway, people are allowed to do that.

You're an insult to the frontline workers. Why dont you go out and say you dont like adhering to the health advice? God love ye for having to do a few laps. The majority of people are staying within their 5km even if we dont like it but its idiots like you rubbing it in frontline workers faces, ye should be ashamed!

I suspect loan rangers such as myself aren't the ones actually spreading this virus, I'm no expert, but I suspect, it's the folks that are actually mixing and socialising, I could be completely wrong though! Be careful where you're pointing that finger now, I don't see a problem with cyclists and others going beyond, if it prevents a rise in the previous mentioned. You cant implement such restrictions, while not investing heavily in services needed to prevent people from climbing the walls.

Speaking of frontline workers, some nhs staff are showing signs of ptsd, it's fair to say, ours are to. Our mental health services were poorly prepared for such serious issues pre-covid, so be ready!

This is crazy to me! How could they have been open without a licence? Were they pretending that they weren't serving alcohol?

I know there was talk of licence fees being waived for 2020 because of covid but, liquor licences are renewed every September and, in order to get a licence, there's a lot of steps involved aside from the fees. I wonder did Mr. Ritz (I've no idea who owns it) think, because fees were waived, he didn't have to apply in the usual way?

In order to get a licence, you have to serve notice on the Gardaí, the fire station and the courts and your intention must be advertised in the newspaper a month (or so, can't remember the exact time period) before the application. Any and all publicans must do this every year so, Mr. Ritz can't really plead ignorance of the process.

You would wonder if a delivery of alcohol to a premises from a supplier requires that they prove they have a licence before hand.

No it's not their responsibility to check if a publican has all the details in order, that's the guards job, which the reality of is they really just assume everything is correct, and for a general license it is. Normally the solicitor would handle the paper work, its pretty standard. It is the late licence that often gets missed by all sides, and rightly so, ridiculous the fees charged to just get an extra hour of service

I can't see it as I don't use Facebook, but what an incredibly stupid thing to do. From what I have seen, there has been a very good relationship between these guards and pubs in Waterford, tramore, kilmeaden, and else where for years now. I can't really say for sure of any renewal applications been blocked or looked in to for a long time, especially since judge harnott retired. Making accusations on Facebook is really just kicking the Hornets nest and looking for trouble.

I don't like that a newspaper can publish a story, than remove it without any explanation.

  • Registered Users Posts: 200 ✭✭OhToBeByTheSea

It seems difficult to believe that a newspaper would print a story of this nature if they couldn't back it up, particularly because, in order to apply for a licence, a publican must first advertise in a newspaper. You'd imagine the N&S would have very easily checked that part of the story before printing.

    Check the list https://www.revenue.ie/en/corporate/documents/statistics/excise/liquor-licences.pdf

But also note what it says at the top and perhaps thats where the problem is?

    Not a good sign either

    https://waterford-news.ie/2021/01/16/uhw-surpasses-100-covid-patients/

Last week, there were two outbreaks of Covid reported in the hospital – in the Ardkeen Ward and in Orthopaedic 2. It is understood that a lot of patients who entered the hospital Covid free with other complaints, contracted the virus on these wards and were either moved to Covid wards or sent home to free up beds.

There are now three wards in the Dunmore Wing reserved for Covid. More on this story in Tuesday’s print edition.

I was out for an afternoon walk earlier within the 5K I was walking along the quay when the tramore bus pulled into the bus stop I couldn,t help but overhear what the bus driver said to the two people looking to board the tramore bus " I can't leave anyone on the bus unless you have a proof you're a resident in tramore residents only I have specific instructions from the guards " .

Just been prompted to remember that the Tramore fuzz had their own social distancing issues before Christmas no wonder things are bad. They dare not enforce the law lest they look like hypocrites.

155 new cases. Nationally 60 new deaths notified 59 occurred in January (to that in context pro-rata UK population 900 - 1300 died there so we are getting very bad indeed)

As you say the numbers are static. Going down slowly perhaps but still far too high. Especially 2+ weeks into L5 + no schools.

It ain't looking good for us locally for the time being. Constantly towards the top of the numbers list sadly. I am resigned to the restrictions lasting until after Easter at the earliest. In case you are wondering Easter is the 4th April!

I was in town today(to go to the pharmacy in case the stay home police are watching) and there must have been a max of about 20 ppl in there, mostly between Dunnes and Dealz. So I dont know how its been spread in this city TBF.

Its spreading in factories,i know of one multinational that its rampant in and people who have tested positive from there and subsequently family members getting it from them ,all this seems to be swept under the carpet although in fairness to Darren Skelton he did contact our four TD's about it on Twitter last week but that seems to have fallen on deaf ears!

Not me, I checked back on the gov.ie site to see. I did a comparison between briefing and the following days numbers and it's a mess. A few look like typos which does not surprise me one bit. Wexford went from 4483 to 4815 yesterday and then to 4721 on the Hub today.
Often see on the gov site the main page will have 1 number for the total of case and another on the briefing page. Considering it's a government site you would think it would be doubled checked. I contacted then once about it and the inability to add and I got a bullsh*t excuse about privacy of patients etc.

Are people from New Ross being sent to Waterford to get tested? Then the numbers come back and all positives are attributed to Waterford before being adjusted a day later?
