Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

My father has my head wrecked. I put the idea of gettin a couple of galloways into his head a few years ago.
He is now obsessed with them. Anytime he is up the midlands he always checks the herd of belted ones in Meath or Kildare somewhere up there. Over the Christmas I had to check a mates cows on an island and dad came along. My mate actually has a belted one. My dad was like a child seeing santy.
Anyways does anyone know where I could get my hands on one? Pedigree but not interested in registered. I see some on donedeal but most pedigree ones are up north

Only ever seen a few but never came across a pedigree one. I don't go to the marts. (that's a place for folks with money) I have asked a dealer here a few days ago but he has not got back to me yet.

Which dealer? You can PM me his name if you like. I'm trying to think of a chaps name from Roscommon, Martin or Michael or something, buys a lot of dry cows in marts and he's big into moiled cattle. He'd be a good place to start perhaps.

Small time dealer. You would have heard of him. But he does know the big dealers.

I'm in no major panic with gettin one. Don't really have grass for it yet. I have some nice ground rented but not allowed in till march. Plus I don't want one coming off slats I want an outwintered one.
    Am I being fussy now?

The word that you're on the hunt for one will get around somehow anyway!

I met a lad that runs a small pedigree herd of them along with a pedigree herd of charolaises for a big stud/estate in Kildare. I went up to see his Charolais and get some breeding advice. Fierce sound man and a wealth of knowledge. Rooms full of rosettes .even had heifer of a pedigree ch cow and pd belted bull. Showed me a pen of galloways that were heading out west the following day. 1500 each. I was shocked.they looked like culls to me. I'm sure I could dig out his number if you want it. Even for abit of advice off him. He knows his stuff.

They have 2 coats of hair. One long to keep off the rain and a short hair for insulation

Bought a Beltie/AA a few years ago, she had a couple of heifers to start, bred from one and she went to Kildare, the second only had half a belt (Girth) and there was no interest in her. Cow goes in calf easily, in fact I think she just has to look at the AI man.

Has given me all bulls ever since and she due in a couple of months to Dovea's Beltie bull. Slaughtered one in Nov at 28/29 months and 290kg DW ( they don't get very big!)

If she has a heifer I'll let you know, one black and white striped lunatic running around the place is more than enough!

Calm is not in their vocabulary, frisky would be a compliment! The cow can be particularly 'difficult' at times, when freshly calved having a gate between us does not stop her from having a go. I dread when it's time to inseminate, even the smallest gap will be tested as she just closes her eyes and barges through, but having said that they're fine when out in the field :)

My landlord had one in his herd a while but had to separate it as it was disruptive.... . There is a fine herd here in Kerry They seem to be to cattle what Jacobs are to sheep.. there are adverts on donedeal etc...

A lot of the organic lads run Galloway might be worth a look.

Just saw a herd out wintered on Tipp Kk border last Sunday when out for a drive. The townland I think is Coolaigh pronounced Cool la near Windgap / Callan.
Don't know predigree or not but couldn't believe how comfortable they looked in this weather out!

I seen some in Scotland years ago. Ground was frozen with some snow. Didn't know anything about them back then. But they looked happy out.

Is there any commercial value to the Galloway calves?
Is it better to put a good easy calving limo to them?
The more info ye are giving me the more interested in gettin in them.
I'm goin to ring des Dunne at the weekend and arrange a visit. I'll surprise the ould fella. Don't know what excuse ill make to him to get him to Kildare. Might try organise it for a day that there is horse racing on up that direction

The National Stud and Japanese Gardens are always worth a visit.
Outside of that the wimmen here seem to spend a lot of time an money in that big shopping place there. Whitewater I think they call it.

The thing that has me interested in them is they are a conservation breed they would be happy out on a hill of rough grazing of in a bog eating heather and are also naturally polled so no dehorning of calves.

This was an old one brought back to life looking back at my earlier comments.
I have since got out of Dairy farming and into Galloways along with Highlands a bit of contract rearing and other stuff. If anyone is still looking to know about Galloways you can PM me https://blackfieldfarm.com/belted-galloway-cattle/
