A family member is buying a pre-owned house.  Is the MPRN a unique number to the metre or will he get a new MPRN number when he registers his details with Electric Ireland. Thanks.

MPRN is a unique number to the meter

It's a Meter Point Reference Number. It is assigned by ESB Networks and identifies an individual meter point.

The MPRN doesn't change when the property owner or electricity provider changes.

As a new customer or if you change electricity suppliers you would get a new customer account number from your electricity supplier.

    Hi hillbloom,

    The other posters are correct.

The MPRN is used to identify the property by ESB Networks. It will remain the same regardless of what company is the supplier and will not change.

The account number is used to identify the customer by the supplier.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,
    Aoife

    Hi hillbloom,

    Thank you for your reply.

An application to switch supplier can be completed if Electric Ireland are not the current supplier. Regardless of what company the supply is with, your family member will need to contact Electric Ireland on 1850 305 090 directly as they will need to give permission to put the account in their name. Alternatively, they can register on the website with their MPRN and opening meter reading.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

    Thanks,
    Aoife
