Listening to football on the Radio

    Folks, where are the best options when you are on the move and you want to hear footie commentaries. Are they any Irish options or do we have to tune into BBC or Talksport? Thinking when I'm driving, usually it is a bit in and out with quality with the UK feeds.

    I think Newstalk is the only station that has a live premier league match on with results from other games throughout

    Newstalk seem to do matches on the weekend
    a radio commentator has to have different skills than a tv commentator, sadly sometimes they dont know the difference
    BBC 5 Live and TalkSport reception on medium wave in the Republic can be patchy with lots of interference - i suppose you can get it on DAB if you are near the border
    I often listen to them when in the car midweek when there is matches on
    I am used to listening to sports on the radio - Cricket is often suitable to have on as background when you are doing other things.

    I know that the sport is locked out on the Internet radio Five Live outside the UK.
    As said, medium wave is just about possible in the east.

    +1 5Live is on 693, 909 and 990 KHz AM. Worth storing all three on the car radio and pick the one with best coverage on the day.

    990 KHz is a relatively weak signal from Wales but sometimes comes through clearer than the others.

    Here in Wexford town I find 990 is good during daylight and 693 after sundown.

    Today FM lost /seeded the license to Saturday games about two years ago, at the time they said it was because they weren't being offered again? It seemed a bit odd but in hindsight it was possibly just a restructuring thing and a move to more music broadcasting, I assumed Newstalk would move on them, but wasn't to be.

    Newstalk do Sunday Premier League games, usually the 4pm games and occasionaly the game before it.
    I noticed that Fm104 advertised having Premier League games via the app, this was from Talksport, but I'm not sure how that worked in terms of rights, maybe they have that old Today FM license or maybe it was free to air because of the changes in broadcast imposed by lockdown.


    Meant to add: football on the radio is great, Talksport and BBC do a great job in the UK, I loved working there and having that on all day on a Saturday. Its a shame we don't have the capacity for a sports driven station here. Newstalk / Off The Ball have the app now but still a lot of prerecorded content on it.

    On FM104 having games via TalkSport.... C103 in Cork had the TalkSport streams available on line too for all the games when football returned post covid - I was also able to access games on 5 live directly on the BBC website (no VPN or anything like that), none of them were Geo-Blocked.
    Perhaps there was some sort of deal done to allow games free to air for the end of the season - same as some TV games were free to air.

    On 909 - I've often tuned into this in the car just outside Cork city. A bit of fading alright but you could follow a game. All this talk reminds me of being a kid and listening to Arsenal win the league in old Trafford on 5 live. Sitting in the car with the auld lad, great memories! That was in the midlands and reception on 909 was great, used to listen to lots of games that way.

    Do Rte and their coverage of county club games that no one outside the local parish has any interest in not do it for you?

    Not for me no! In fairness a lot of local stations do excellent coverage of their county teams, big commitment for them to make.

    I recall Newstalk kicking up a fuss they didn't get the rights to certain Gaa games a few years back, it all went to Rte, must have been a big blow in terms of potential sponsorship.

    Did you mean PSG in the Champions' League SF? That match was under the control of UEFA whereas the OP is talking about domestic soccer in the UK which (in the case of the Premier League) is controlled by the FA.

    So different media rights and different contractual restrictions.

    In fairness, he didn't explicitly say so. But mentioning 'footie commentaries', 'BBC' and 'Talksport' in a two line post, I assume it's Premier League he's talking about.

    I did an internet search with noting conclusive though I wonder is it due to the pandemic? (Opening the airwaves due to the restrictions visiting sports grounds?)

    Yep, I think this is it. A lot of local stations here have streams from talksport on their websites too. Same reason why nearly all the games are on TV and the BBC free to air even get a (lousy) pick.

    Talksport via tunein radio app had the four games yestwrday with commentary. Seemed a specialised international feed. Tweets and texts being read out from Ghana, America and Ireland.

    5 Live wasn't restricted today either. Similar happened last season but didn't last long.

    5 live was grand for me this evening via tune in radio app. No vpn or messing about either.
