Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

In From the south of the county thinking of heading up to Lough derg tomorrow for the day and looking for some advice as not familiar with the area.
Are there any particularly nice areas to visit and do a walk along the lake or ideally bring the bikes and cycle (back/country roads if possible as safer)?

Just 2 of us so no kids/buggys

    Thanks

You could try the southern end, Ballina northwards, to Garrykennedy via Castlelough with a return to Ballina via Portroe village. It isn't too long (a bit hilly) and has some lovely views. If you're okay with hills you could return via the Graves of the Leinstermen viewing point - fantastic scenery. Castlelough has a beach with nice views across to Clare, an old graveyard with interesting folk art slate gravestones and a tiny walk through a wood - there are back roads from there to Garrykennedy harbour, again with a couple of woodland walks alongside - the bluebells are probably coming out around now.

The roads are a little rough not sure I'd cycle it on your first time up as it'll be busy, plenty to do on foot, you could head to Killaloe/Ballina get a nice place on the river bank and watch the action on the water and visit the famers market https://m.facebook.com/KillaloeFarmersMarketClare/
Not far away then is Garykenndy, if you have a designated driver you could grab some take away pints with some white gypsy beer battered fish in Larkin's, https://m.facebook.com/LarkinsGarrykennedy/

There's loads of places to visit, dromineer will be quite there's a stone beach there but nothing open in the village, marina is also quite, i'd nearly head for Killaloe and start exploring from there, bring a picnic blanket if you intend sunbathing. Or if you've a boat all the better.

If you enjoy a walk you could climb to the top of the devil's bit it's not lough derg but it's a nice walk with a climb up to the cross at the end with great views. If your coming via thurles you could stop by the cabra wetlands for a nature walk if it's not water logged.
