I know someone who has a Viking Racer, its alright but not the best according to him. I have a Jupiter Tuscan hybrid (half way down the page) cost €250, in my local shop, and hasn't given me a days bother I've racked up a good few miles on it, never had to adjust anything (gears brakes ect). I am upgrading though I have ordered a forme longcliffe now all the same as the hybrid is a bit too cumbersome but I'm still keeping my hybrid.

Thank you for that, but unfortunately its too big for me, I am only 5.10 so that frame size is for a much taller lad than me!

I also saw this one http://thebigbikestore.com/product/dawes/discovery-101-2012which seems to be a much better option, but I am not so familiar with the brand: Dawes?? Anyone??

Last December/January I bought a Jupiter Vermont hybrid for commuting for about €290 including lights and a lock in Walsh's cycles in Galway.

Never had any bother with it and racked up plenty of miles on it before selling it at the start of the summer and getting a dropped bar bike.

it's aluminium and fork so not very heavy for a hybrid and had a tripple x 8 speed so you could spin up walls in the thing, I did a lot of little spins out the coast road as well so it's pretty comfortable up to 50km spins anyway.

The tyres that come with are Raleigh touring tyres and are 35c and would be perfect for the winter, the are absolute bomb proof, I didn't get a single puncture and I rode a piece of road that had a bottle bank at the side of it at one point where there was regularly bits of broken glass all over the cycle path.

Is this the one you are talking about? http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Jupiter-Vermont-Gents-Hybrid-Bike-21-/261097776171?pt=UK_Bikes_GL&hash=item3ccaa3e42b#ht_2684wt_861

    That's be the one.

I did change the seatpost though because the shock seat post was horrible and unneeded.

You could probably get it chaper in an LBS to be honest as it's old stock at this stage.

maybe give ucd's belfield bike shop a call to see what they've got in stock to match your price range? Any time I've been over there they have lots of good condition hybrids for your price range.

My Father bought one of them at the start of the year, I had a few spins on it, didn't like it myself, much preferred my own cheaper bike and it was bought in LK bikes.

Considering the pice difference, I'd just get the Jupiter.

That and it's alloy (heavier) and it's got ****ty "revoshift" shifters.

I bought the Felt QX75 in Eurocycles for €399. I think they still have it at that price. Like it a lot. Decent enough spec for the price. Use it for messing about. Have done a 85km spin on it. Western Greenway, Westport to Achill and back with no problems.

Dawes are a good solid UK manufacturer and the bike looks reasonable enough but I'd shop around for prices as Dawes themselves list the bike at £249 so you shouldn't be paying any more than that for it.

There are a few lbs that list Dawes as a supplied make so you could see what they can get one in for?

    ***** EDIT ******
Doh! Didn't get as far as page 2 befor posting a response. Anyway, useful advice perhaps for those interested?

Congrats on the Giant, great value at that price.

How fast is the Felt qx75 on roads?

Probably need someone with a better level of fitness than me to say for sure but I would probably average 23/25k on most spins and the "max speed" setting on my clock often surprises me by telling me it was up at 35/38k. I don't know if that is good or bad but it rolls along nice and quietly and is very responsive. My average spin on the hybrid is about 15 to 20k on decent roads and mostly flat(ish). I had the Q85 in the past which is definitely a better bike but given the price difference I'm very happy with it.

Thanks for the heads up on the Felt. I was looking for a hybrid to do a bit of green lane and canal cycling and the QX75 seems to fit the bill. I ride a carbon roadbike so this will be a bit of a change for me, I do however own a BSO that thinks its a mountain bike so the Felt can only be an improvement on that.:D

By the way they seem to have only 48cm bikes left.

Would be good for what you describe I think. I have a decent road bike, not full carbon (yet!), and the hybrid is a nice change and a bit of crack for messing around on. Serious weight difference of course. I'm small so the 48cm was right for me anyway. Didn't realise it was all they have.
