    Long story short:

A friend bumped in to a car, admitted fault etc. That person now says it'll cost xxx to fix it with cash through their own mechanic. Or they'll go to the insurer which will then cost xxxx to fix (more work done through them).

Any advice? Will going through insurance increase the cost of insurance for my friend if it ends up that way?

Yes, going through the insurance will bump up your premium and it will affect your no claims bonus.
make the decision based on the cash involved, and the level of trust involved.

Thought as much. In cases like this do most people trust the cash quote given? I know it's ultimately up to the other person but it seems kind of fair to want to make sure that it really does cost xxx to fix it.

Your friend needs to be prepared for the possibility of a whiplash claim after money is handed over.

Going through insurance will affect your friends no claim bonus, but they may have no claims protection
