Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

We just got hammered with hailstones and thunder in Greystones.

    Incredible weather for June.

Bright and sunny now near Tralee at 14.8C with big clouds about , convection growing and moving across the country.

It's just gone dark as dusk in Kilpedder, Wicklow - with hail, thunder and lightening. Very eery light and hail is really pelting down.

Would this be a bit mad for June?

Few rumbles of thunder there coming from the north side of cork city.

Has been sunshine with heavy showers all day. Hailstones earlier too.

Just saw it on the map but didn't hear anything in the city centre.

Hopefully we might get some more!

That shower band bubbling up and headed for Dublin from the southwest may provide a few sparks in the next couple of hours.

Some sferics elsewhere around the country in the last few minutes.

Nada for that band in to Dublin as of yet..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,181 ✭✭✭PukkaStukka

Aircraft departing Dublin are making immediate sharp right turns, presumably to avoid the incoming weather

  • Registered Users Posts: 409 ✭✭holliehobbie

Thought I heard thunder and few minutes ago. Heavy rain for about the last half hour in D8. Plus got really dark too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,415 ✭✭✭Trebor176

Was that thunder just now in Dublin 22?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,317 ✭✭✭emo72

Big flash of lightning with thunder almost simultaneous here in Dunboyne at about 5:50. Electricity went briefly. House alarms were going off for a while.

    Lashing now. No flashes since.

Doesn't look like anything beefy enough left for Dublin at this stage.

Weather coming from the NE /E tomorrow , models showing heavy local showers building from early morning. Fair chance of isolated thunderstorms. The SE area in particular showing up for lightning potential.

    Day 2 Convective Outlook
    VALID 06:00 UTC Mon 10 Jun 2019 - 05:59 UTC Tue 11 Jun 2019

    ISSUED 21:04 UTC Sun 09 Jun 2019

    ISSUED BY: Dan

A rather complex pattern evolves across the British Isles on Monday, and while confidence is high in the macroscale detail it is considerably lower for mesoscale detail. The broad upper pattern sees an upper trough over the British Isles, with an upper low initially over Ireland drifting southeast to the Brest peninsula by Monday evening. At the surface, an area of low pressure centred over the Low Countries at midday will push frontal rain across parts of England and Wales from the southeast, with notable warm advection occurring over the southern North Sea on Monday night.

... NORTHERN IRELAND / REPUBLIC OF IRELAND / SCOTLAND ...
Highest confidence during this forecast period exists over these areas, where a combination of cold air aloft combined with surface heating will yield 300-600 J/kg MLCAPE. This, combined with low-level wind convergence and topographic forcing will enable scattered showers to develop, especially from late morning and through the afternoon, before gradually decaying during the evening hours.

Some sporadic lightning seems likely, especially over Ireland where instability will be greatest. Hail up to 1.0cm in diameter will be possible from the most intense cells, though in general shear will be quite weak and so "pulse-type" convection will tend to be the most favoured mode.

Fascinating that cell fired up very quickly almost on the coast all by itself and with no high ground
It may well be an interesting day

Showers probably developing more away from the immediate east coast as the day goes on due to more onshore wind.

Just inland though some good storm potential this afternoon.

That same shower or a relation is drifting south of Wicklow town now hugging the coast to a few km's inland
    I'm just south of it
Here's some of its leading edge cauliflower

Some fun has started south Cavan. Heavy hail shower and some lightning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,219 ✭✭✭pad199207

Going to have to be well inland today to see any sparks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,039 ✭✭✭redsteveireland

    Loughrea is under there somewhere.
Taken from netweather radar, a couple of recent sferics.

Edit: Sferics are actually from earlier over Ballinasloe in the second image.

Dublin's got plenty of it lately, haven't seen lightning or heard thunder here since October 2017!

Showers on their way to West Clare, not sure if they're electrified.

Nice little thunderstorm in Clonmel 20 minutes ago. All lightning in the cloud as far as I could see.

There could be some sparks along the Southern and South Eastern Coasts tomorrow evening if deeper convection can develop under cooler air aloft.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,867 ✭✭✭sparrowcar

Any prospects for Dublin this eve? Met.ie giving heavy rain with possible thunderstorms this evening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,219 ✭✭✭pad199207

Could have sworn I just heard thunder here in Kildare

Yes you did pad I was up a ladder outside when I heard first crack then the heavens opened , needless to say I was down the ladder quicker than a flash of lightning

Sunday looking like a lot of potential for convection . LP nearby feeding in rainbands, strong jet overhead with a lot of DLS and LLS available, plenty of vorticity in the mix, cold uppers and strong sun getting through breaks in the cloud , all peaking in the afternoon /early evening producing big heavy showers and sporadic thunderstorms a possibility but as we have seen over the last couple of weeks these in general are often short lived.

Could be seeing temperatures getting up to 16 or 17C in places during the afternoon.

Worth keeping an eye on the charts on the lead up to this. With that much shear available might be some possibility of funnel clouds forming .
