Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

RTE Player on Boxee

    Hi All,

I have developed a player like the BBC iplayer for Boxee. That means that anybody using Boxee (Windows, Mac, Linux, AppleTV or other) will be able to watch all the shows in fullscreen available from the RTE Player.
At the moment, features available are:
    - Highlights displayed on Home page and ready to be played.
    - TV Section contains Latest, Last Chance, Categories and A-Z
    - For all of those, it plays only the last show available.

What I need to work on still:
    - Display previous show available
    - Add Radio section with all RTE Podcast
    - Add Search functionality.

I am waiting on Boxee Community to see how I can make that available from Boxee repository.

sounds great. I hoped this would happen but didn't think it would. Do u work for rte or do u have cooperation/blessing? I had wondered my self about how to reverse engineer the interface (since its flash).

    Do tell? :)

    No I don't work for RTE ;)
Just installed Boxee on my new AppleTV and then saw that BBC iPlayer was on it so why not RTE Player.
So I started investigating it and did it myself. I have the repository in place on my own server so anybody that runs boxee will soon be able to test it. All contributions or comments will be welcome.

Scruff, As for XBMC I didn't look yet if it would work but why not as Boxee is based on XBMC. Once I am happy with the Boxee version, I will look into XBMC.

Here is a preview of what I have at the moment.

    looks great

what format are the rte player streams? flash video or h264?

just wondering as theres a new 100euro media player coming out this week called xtreamer which supports h264 and flash (but not the on2 vp6 codec yet) and it would be cool to have rte player working with it.

that xtreamer looks very interesting. If it lives up to its promise for €99 its definitely a better buy than the likes of the WD tv.

Ok some update on what I have now. Rather than focusing on RTE Player only, I have integrated RTE, TV3, SkyNews and City Channel in the same app. I have some other plans that I need to investigate before I say anything.
At the moment it is working great and I should have a version ready for testing soon.

This sounds really cool, maybe you could put tg4.tv in there as well.

Would this also be able to integrate with windows media center?

Sorry if a silly question, don't know much about boxee...:o

That's well cool, good work, XBMC would be great too!

RTE should give you a medal but they'll probably try to have you arrested instead :-)

How did you get around the fact that the RTE streams are encrypted?

By the way, I'm also a Boxee on ATV user so happy to test...

good work, i was hoping somebody would develop this.

    pitty, looks like vapourware

    Alexis,
I would be interested in this plugin too. Hope you get around to finishing it. I see you have a France24 boxee plugin and a repo for it, would you not just put your current plugin (without the TV3 stuff) up, so that some beta testers can try it?

    Thanks

    Jerome

This would be fantastic - hope we get to see it sometime! Boxee is great but we need some good streaming content we can access from ireland!

I had been looking at creating a plugin for Plex but haven't had the time to investigate what's involved with the RTMPE protocol. Processing the XML feed is easy enough.

Seems to be done, just saw it retweeted (by @boxee )they are looking for testers next week.

    Hey,
Just to clarify. I have been working on a separate RTE Player app. Hope to launch it to my repository (dir.nexthop.ie) early next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 358 ✭✭dkane

Beta version of RTE Player Boxee App just launched
    see: http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=12363

    Comment/Bug reports welcome

Happily using this now. Just finished watching 6:01 news, also did a bit of navigating the menus.

    Thanks dkane

I've been hoping someone would develop this.

If you need any help testing/working on the app let me know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 358 ✭✭dkane

Work away on testing it. Its available to download from my DEV repository.
I have't had much time to do much more with it the past few days. I need to get the javascript for the controls working properly and fix a couple of things in the UI.

Very interested in any feedback anyone has on the app.

@dkane : Do you have plans to support more of the topbar menu items i.e. My Videos and others? Seems a bit low on space for more then 2 or so extra items over the current but I see you listed scaling in your known issues so my question might be covered by that issue.

I've only found one or two navigation transition issues which also seem to match your known issues list.

Please let us know when you release any updates to the app and great work so far!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 358 ✭✭dkane

I don't currently have plans to implement My Videos or Categories.
I have to manually maintain a list of shows for the A to Z, I haven't found any easy way to pull this list from the RTE website. Storing Category information for each show would just make it that bit more complex and harder to manage manually.
I haven't even looked at the My Videos page. I guess this info is stored in cookies but I haven't had time to look into it.

Dorsanty, does the auto play work for you or do you have to press play twice to get the videos to play?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 535 ✭✭✭Dorsanty

I've had no problems with the video starting once I select play in boxee.

I haven't looked into Boxee app development myself and what you seem to have to do looks painful for the A-Z list. Are there debugging tools out there to debug compiled flash apps i.e. can you see if the player app is downloading an xml list of categories or show a-z lists or even see what calls it is making to the server at rte?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 358 ✭✭dkane

RTE Player uses Atom feeds to generate each page.
I have just worked out the format for the a to z pages so in my next version it will pull the shows automatically (I won't need to keep the list updated)

Finding some time to work on the new version is the next problem!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 358 ✭✭dkane

    Some small bug fixes made.
Fixed the sizing of the top menu items (Look fine on my 4:3 screen. Will try different monitors later when I get a chance)
Fixed the problem with the A to Z button only working the first time it is clicked.

You need to download version 1.0.1 of the app to get these fixes.

anyway of installing this on xbmc?

Same question. Any sign of an XBMC version?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 64 ✭✭Sneakee

Would love to see the XBMC version of this as well, would kick ass, I think XBMC is far more popular than Boxee. Hopefully it can be worked on and not end as vaporware!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭kaisersose77

its encrypted flash so not possible to stream it on xbmc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 64 ✭✭Sneakee

What about the BBC iPlayer for XBMC, isn't that encrypted Flash as well?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 64 ✭✭Sneakee

Put forward a request to see if its possible to do in the XBMC forum.
At least to prove if it could be done or not.

    http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=67855

Hoping since the RTE player went international for some of its programs that it may finally interest some people in porting it onto the XBMC. Fingers crossed.

Xbmc doesnt support rtmpe streams (bbc iplayer uses rtmp atm)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 64 ✭✭Sneakee

I guess that's that so. Fair enough. Disappointing.
I guess the Boxee platform is the only possible solution for an app. I hope with the Boxee Box from D-Link on the way, that someone developes an updated RTE app for it.

Either to get this in combo with my existing Xbox or get a new expensive HTPC to work as Boxee/XBMC and use browser. :(

Anyone Know how you would go about creating a Plugin for TunerFree MCE for RTÉ Player?

  • Registered Users Posts: 144 ✭✭MrGarak

Would love to have it on XBMC, shame.

Am over in England at the moment and want to watch play back of gaelic football games. For some reason my computer cannot connect to server. Used to work fine but RTE seem to have some new format where even worldwide programmes can no longer be viewed. Anyone know anything about this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,278 ✭✭✭KeRbDoG

Yup, RTE have locked out their RTE Player and some streams to non-Irish IPs.
Easy way to get around not having an Irish IP is to use an Irish VPN :) An easy way is to use a pay-for VPN service.
Linky to one called OverPlay in my sig, yes, it costs a few quid a month but yea get to use all Irish only services like RTE player and also US based services like Hulu :D

That linked service is also super easy to setup too

    /plug

Does that VPN interfere with your normal broadband in any way? I have heard that there can be problems with some of them. Whats your view?

  • Registered Users Posts: 16 donnyd

Providing of course you;re not working for them.

    donnyd wrote: »

Don't work for them, but the link in the ref link is a referral linky :)

You turn the VPN on and off as you require it and allows yea to select the country yea want to VPN into to 'pretend' your in that country to fool services like BBC iPlayer (obviously of no use to you) and RTE Player.
Very easy on Mac OSX and Windows as its a simple application that does everything.

btw, there is a lot more VPN services like OverPlay but none that I've found to be as easy and fool proof
