I’ve been following Hayteam TV on YouTube for the last few months, an enjoyable watch - and some smashing fastracs as well!!

Stumbled upon Farmer Phil a few months back, initially enjoyed it but got sick of the poor mouth "subscribe as this is what pays the bills" kinda yap. They're filthy rich, they're fooling no one acting like they're hard up. Buying new gear every second week. If they were hard up they wouldn't be buying a new agitator just because!

iFarm WeFarm was another I stumbled upon. A few good videos but the videos are unwatchable because they're all clickbait and made for content rather than farming chat/activities. An example was when he was putting a loader on the Case "I have the loader on, I hope she can handle it and it doesn't fail, I'll have a video up, I don't know what will happen!". Stop talking ****e lad, you know what's gonna happen.

Also I have a feeling the reviews of equipment aren't genuine either. I sense he goes to his local salesman and he gets money knocked off the equipment for favourable reviews.

Phil is good to watch but he is taking no wage for his work just what he makes off youtube according to him. It will be hard to sustain the hours he puts in and the hours to edit the videos for very little money.

    How can you believe this?

New gear every week you say? An agitator? hardly 100k worth. Don't they mix alot of slurry? I reckon if one was mixing lots of slurry, a new agitator would be a good purchase.
Have you beef with him for some other reason?

What kind of a weekly in one are these YouTube's bringing in extra from YouTube? Like farmer Phil and i farm we farm?

Would make around 1k a month cash.

Then add in all the sponsorships and free equipment, and it all adds up.

He said himself they didn't need a new one, just someone traded it in and they decided to buy it.

He doesn't make any money farming apparantly. Where's the money going for the contracting alone, never mind the cattle.

No beef, I am giving my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭lab man

I agree with slug. what cant get is how they have time for all the cattle and the contracting he said there one time they have about 28 tractors

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 877 ✭✭✭mengele

What's gas with farmer Phil's farm is the fact they can leave that 6290 parked up in the shed so long with out fixing it. That tractor is still worth 20k and its looks the cleanest of their 6290s. There's no panic to get it going whereas If one of my tractors packed up I would have it fixed within a month.

I enjoy watching father Phil. He is very handy with the spanners and knows those Masseys inside out.

Most of the vids are about 5 times too long... .watching 20 minutes for info that could be contained in 5 minutes

Farmer Phil seems a nice guy but his dad and uncle are far more interesting, and knowledgeable... also they come from my era

I can only take him at his word. That was months ago. He probably makes a lot more these days through deals and viewers. More power to him.

A lot of the channels are just advertising now and I don't watch them much anymore. One lonely farmer was one of the few that stayed the same. Western truck and tractor repair is still the same too.

It actually is very good. I came across it randomly one day ............ I wasn't even trying to do anything with the hydraulics on a MF 35! I just started watching it and watched it right through to the end

Agree re. the ‘cliff hanger’ video titles and thumbnails. Can be a bit over the top but I think as long as the content is there in the background then I can live with that. Farmer Phil videos are too long. A lot of talking about nothing which could be cut out and much more watchable videos around the 5-10min mark would be preferable. 29 min video to show the potatoes being dug is a prime example. Cool to see the machinery in action but could have been covered in a much more compact video....

I've started watching African channels. One in particular is Farm Up, it's interesting seeing a small scale farm being set up from scratch.

Absolutely, I think he's a great young lad. Yeah his videos are long but I throw it on the telly when I'm having lunch. Its the interaction and craic with the family that makes it, I'm not looking for a how-to-tag cattle video. Editing videos down is a seriously time consuming job so anything he gets from YT is well earned. More power to him and long may it continue.

I paid for some DVD's a few years back on MF Engines and hydraulics from here:
    http://vintagetractorengineer.com/category/fergusonmf/

they were well worth it at the time but the amount of free content on YouTube now is amazing. Its a dificult thing to video a clear instructional video and she has done it well. I clicked the old subscribe button there, I'll defenitly have a look at some of her other ones and there is quite a few. Thanks

YouTube needs more lads of your vintage telling of farming in the 60's/70's IMO .
Tom Pembertons father is a great lad to hear talking aswell as Phils father and uncle

I don’t mind the long videos, I don’t have a tv anymore so ya something interesting to be watching in the evening. Don’t want it all as short quick fire bullet points, I want to be entertained too. And I can’t be too critical as most of it is free viewing on demand.

I do have an issue with the Click Bait headlines some are using. I fell for IFarm WeFsrm this week. Title was “SILAGE PIT DISASTER!!!! THIS WAS A UNWANTED SHOCK”. And then “MY WORST FEARS COME TRUE!!!!!”, “ROTTEN” with a big red arrow pointing at the pit.
I felt sorry for the lad as I started watching it, be a tough winter for him after spending a nice bit in new sheds and machinery. Thought he was going to burst into tears. There was nothing wrong with the silage, wee bit of mould that he forked off and he was delighted with it. Worse than a Sun headline.

The working from home craic got me wondering through Youtube. As well as those mentioned previously, I keep an eye on a Canadian lad by the name of Mike Mitchell
    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRDywryGtWBmac-O4AReYpA/videos

He has a serious size farm, haven't heard the total size. I know a video I seen today where he was sowing around wet spots that was skipped first time around and he expected to get 4000 more acres just from those wet spots  Biggest field is 5000 acres I recall. It's all land, no sheds. Land and bins!

Just to bring ye up to speed cos I know ye've all been wondering - the lad farms ~54,000 acres and is looking at renting more land

I pretty much agree with every word there.
These video hosting sites and the blogging sites like Wordpress encourage the use of emotive headlines, everytime I create a blog post it rates my headlines lowly and suggests using more emotive language to attract followers.

but i think that he is such a perfectionist that he really does think its a disaster. I mean who puts 4 covers on a pit and not such much as a needle hole in any of them! He wouldn't want to spend a week on my farm or he would be in the psychiatric unit with all that's wrong here.

Could be wrong but I think you earn more or can monetize videos/have ads before them if they are over 10mins.

They are all still better than Ear to the Ground, (maybe Grassmen too).

What I like is that some show the good and the bad, eg Clydes Farm on Farmflix.

Regarding advertising products, why pay the IFJ or RTE a couple of thousand in advertising when you can send out one product to these guys and still reach the same audience, its a no brainer for companies, much larger companies are doing it in other industries in America.

There was on crowd heavily advertising one product, best thing since sliced bread, yet if you looked on social media you'd see them on their side or lads giving out about latches on back doors busting off.

That's how you get biased reviews from lads wanting free stuff. You can't trust reviews on these because it's all done to fill their own pocket.

Watched iFarm WeFarm and he said the LEDs on the tractor were ****e and they were corroding but he said he won't name the brand because he doesn't "bash" brands.

Yet he has no trouble praising every bit of kit he has.

This is why I love ProjectFarm on youtube, he purchases all items and tests them against manufacturers' claims.

I know of someone who posted complaining about a product on social media and they stated they got a solicitors letter asking them to take it down.

That IFarm fella was raving about one guy who gave him stuff, said I'd try him, nearly had to harrass him just to get a response, ended up taking my business elsewhere.

I watched some of Project Farm only the other day. Very in depth and as you say, no fooling around trying to keep companies happy. Not everything is applicable to us here, a lot of American brands etc. That's a great little lawn mower engine he's got. He has put all sorts into the poor thing and it keeps going.

Is there a lot of work with making videos and editing? I'm thinking about setting up an Instagram page to cover the new adventure for myself and maybe a few YouTube videos down the line. I'd like to do it to see the changes rather than publicity.

The only thing I'm weary of is everything is out there for everyone the see and criticise.

If I was to start a channel, I wouldn't put up videos right away.

I would record the videos, edit etc as normal but don't publish them. See if you keep it up consistently.

This helps two ways - you will see if you have the motivation to keep making videos or if you just give it up after a while. If it was me, then people knowing I went to start and then gave it up would embarrass me.

Second, if people like your vids, they'll have a few videos to binge and more likely to give a subscribe than if you only have one video.

Editing depends on what type of equipment you have, internet, etc.

2 screens, fast broadband, a proper video editor it wouldn't be too bad if you saw the worth in an hour doing it.

There is a lot to editing the sort of episodes these lads do.

But if you want to keep it simpler do a blog or instagram or even a Twitter account. You can also just use YouTube as a video hosting site for short clips and add links from your instagram/blog/ twitter etc.

I was weary of the blog for exactly the reasons you say, but the feedback I've received has been positive enough. If you get lots of interest and followers etc great and if you get none you've lost nothing so I'd say go for it.

I heard a few say it's on average one hour of editing to make one minute of video. Seems a lot to add on top of the actual filming, setting up shots, having cameras charged etc.

I find most of them entertaining and if I don’t, I don’t go back....I have to laugh at the lads complaining about them...there free and no one is forced to watch. They put themselves out there for all to see. Maybe I’m getting old and grumpy but the “hurlers on the ditch” really are getting on my nerves. If someone thinks it’s easy then take at it and I’ll be the first to critique.

Absolutely not true. IFarm wefarm would be very little editing.

All you'd need is your camera, once you have the footage, plug into your computer and load into a video editor. Trim the videos (basically not needed for most vids of iFarm wefarm), edit a thumbnail if you want it to look snazzy and you're away.

Not talking about him. It might have been Welker's I heard it. On his bigger videos where it's showing a Big Bud being rebuild or something. Weeks of clips, adding music, different angles, drone shots things like that.

All social media is going the same way, a lot of it is down to how many likes they get for spouting nonsense.
    Getting on my nerves too.
Others will say I'm wrong myself for saying this and that I'm as bad for disputing.
Always gonna be a differences and arguments, tho unlike in person, these arguments can seldom never be put to bed properly.
