Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

anyway, current coal generation is at 0%, so it's off.

How long does it take to turn it back on ?

I mean ,if met eireann predict a prolonged calm spell of weather to start tomorrow at 7 am ,could moneypoint come back on line to handle the obvious reduction in wind power ...

yesterday was very calm though; there was shag all power being generated by wind. what's the spin up time on a coal plant compared to a gas plant?

You would be lucky to get Moneypoint spinning up and exporting power to the grid within 12-18 hours

    48 hrs sound reasonable?

According to eirgrid for this week, coal is 0% and for the past month, coal is 2%. Surely coal can get phased out.

Realistically, there's a carbon cost (and financial cost) to building a new power station to (hopefully) be used very little ...
Maintaining a near end of life coal plant, and using it 1 or 2 weeks a year as back up,may ironically be a better bet than paying for a brand new gas station ( or 2 ) to replace it . .

Germany phasing out coal by 2038
The €40bn compensation will target four German states which have lignite mines and coal-fired power plants: Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Brandenburg.

UK wont aid new coal plants

He also promised the UK would no longer provide "any new direct official development assistance, investment, export credit or trade promotion for thermal coal mining or coal power plants overseas".

"Not another penny of UK taxpayers' money will be directly invested in digging up coal or burning it for electricity," he said.

The Russians must be thrilled that the Germans are ditching lignite ...
Mind you I'm surprised that lignite mining has kept going this long ... I suppose our equivalent is BnM and turf burning power stations ...
