Well it's Thursday already and thought I'd check in. GETQUICK is now only emailing once a week now that I'm in my 6th week. They still call every evening at exactly 5:30 PM to check to see if I've smoked. I am forwarding this topic I received on Monday last because it kind of cover what we'd been discussing.

    02/09/2009
"By now you've learned and used many of the Quit Strategies that work best for you, but staying away from cigarettes can still be a challenge. Here in the next phase of GETQUIT, you’ll continue to get useful information designed to help you stay on track.

    Details
Congratulations on coming this far. You're showing your strong commitment to quitting by coming here.

You should also be continuing to take your CHANTIX as prescribed by your doctor. If you're feeling confident now, that's great. But an occasional urge for a smoke may still sneak in. CHANTIX may help keep those urges in check. GETQUIT is designed to help you handle your Smoking Risk Situations and encourage you to keep staying away from cigarettes.

Now you're going to build on your success. Remember what you've learned, and keep going.

Don't forget to call the GETQUIT Hotline at 1-877-COACH-09 (1-877-262-2409) when you have an urge to smoke. Live operators are available from 8 AM to midnight Eastern Time, 7 days a week. Keep using it as you need it, along with your support network and your inspiration."

Poutbutton, Kahlan, and the rest of you, keep up the great work.. We can do this!!

    Regards,
    DonnieL

Well done Kahlan you must be thrilled with your marks, it gives you so much confidence when you do well.
I got my 2nd box of champix today, I've taken both tabs now. I was c ontemplating lowering the dosage for the second month but I seem to be having waves of wanting or not wanting to smoke. If I'm busy I dont want to smoke If I'm relaxing or have nothing to do I feel like I should be having one so it's a bit strange. I do not under any circumstances want to ever smoke again but I get these funny feelings in the evenings & at weekends like I "should" be smoking. Weird! So I'll stick out the double dosage rather than cutting down, just in case. :)

Have u just started getting cravings lately. I have started getting them the last two days and i was fine before. I started second box monday.

Well, I had a mother of a day, a good start but from 3pm it went rapidly downhill & to top it off I rang my older sister to get a lift home as I have no car until next Wednesday so we decided to stop off & get some party favours for her daughters birthday tomorrow, on return to her car we discovered it had been clamped. I wont even try to explain her reaction but let me tell you, it was'nt pretty. She blew a couple of fuses. She went competely nuts! She lit a smoke straight away, when she finished it, she was so mad I almost offered her a second one to calm down! It took an hour to get the clamp off, an hour of reaction, reeeeeeeeeeally bad reaction  In the midst of all this I never once felt like having a cigarette myself...I'm beginning too wonder has champix dulled my sense of panic as well as my addiction to nicotene :pac: :pac: :pac:
The GetQuit tips are bang on are'nt they Donnie, they really have researched how smokers or quitters feel at each stage of the process.
Kahlan, you are half way through your first week, congrats!:D

Yes I also started my second box I think we are at the same time on the tabs. I got no real cravings today but yea I started to get them all of a sudden after not getting them. I took 2 pulls last saturday night was disgusted with myself but it was a lesson telling me I'm no where near out of the woods yet. I was thinking before saturday night that I might be able to do this without the drugs anymore but now I'm sticking with the course. I'll just have to watch myself when out having a few, the resolve is lowered. Mine was so I lit one for no real reason other than my friend was chain smoking in my face. Next time I'm around that friend I will be more inclined to say "nope you cant smoke inside my house anymore, no one can". I would'nt mind but the house we had been in for the party before mine was non smoking & this friend had gone outside everytime. If keeping away from chain smokers is all I have to do then I'm fine with banning smoking in my own place. It smelled woeful the next morning after a month without smoke. How are you finding the drug? I've noticed the slight upset stomach on it latley, it's not quite nausea but I feel a bit off at times & often enough to know it's gotta be the champix.

Wow Poutbutton, you did have a doozy of a day!! I did too. I had an appointment with my Doctor to go over a biopsie report from a mole he took off my back last week. And come to find out it's malignant melanoma and he referred me to a Dermatologist for surgery! I thought: "What's the Point"! I'm going straight home and have a smoke!!!!! But, I had 12 miles to think about it and thought, "what the hell is that going to accomplish"! By the time I got home I was cool. I really didn't want the cig any how.
It's funny, I still haven't had the cravings that you all refer to. I don't know if it's a gender thing or not. I'm not sure of Celt262's gender though. Any how, you all keep up the battle and so will I.. Cheers!:D

Donnie I'm so sorry to hear your news, I will say special prayers for you that you will be ok. I dont know if the slip ups or cravings are gender related either, I think it's down to exposure. One person I know was kind of discouraging about the whole quitting thing way back in the beginning. She asked me had I been avoiding all situations where people would be smoking kind of with the added tone of "hmmm, we'll see how you last when you are around smokers so", {evil ness!!} I had been around smokers just not chain smokers. so I now know my danger zone, her!!!
and yes I will work on my avoidance skills thanks very much.
Donnie, I am sending a big warm hug your way.

    Hey everyone,

DonnieL, I am so sorry to hear the news. I did a little research and am wondering what stage the Malignant melanoma is at or whether you know that yet? Well done you for not smoking!! I have told you about last year and pneumonia (the only time I was able to give up for any lengthy amount of time) well the day I went back on the smokes was about a week before my exams and also the day that I found out my best friend might have cancer. When I think back on it, it seems like such a stupid reaction but at the time it seemed perfectly logical. As it turned out, my best friend was fine, the doctor scared the krap out of her (and me) for no reason at all. Anyway, I am sure you will be fine, I have done a little research and surgery is often the only treatment necessary for a malignant melanoma. Just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you, and like Poutbutton I will say a wee prayer to the man above!! as my Dad says.

    Talk soon,

    xxxx

    Hi,
It's funny the physcians assistant that's doing the surgery called me first thing this morning to confirm the appointment for early Monday morning.

He took some time to explain the whole thing to me. As you said, there are 5 stages 5 being the worse. Mine is 1 with some 2. This means an outpatient procedure with a local anesthesia right in the Dermatologist Office. Anything over a 2 requires a regular cancer surgeon.

Thanks for checking it out and the encouragement! It's greatly appreciated. :D

Hey Dude.. Glad to hear I'm not he only guy going through this! Everyone has been super supportive!
And we have to remain aware of those like Tellox who haven't had the success and pray they get support from their physicians immediately. Then keep in touch to let us all know how it's going! Good night all!!

    Hey everyone,

DonnieL, that is great news (not the malignant melanoma but the stage 1/2 bit). I have to say the name for that illness - malignant melanoma - is really scary. The dictionary definition of malignant is: Showing great malevolence; disposed to do evil. May I just say that the medical community really do their best to instill fear in our hearts!! Luckily we are made of sterner stuff! ;)

Celt262, I would be delighted to know how your night on the town went as I am going out clubbing this evening and am slightly anxious as to how the non smoking when surrounded by alcohol will go. Maybe I should stick to water!!!!

Poutbutton, I have to say I am very lucky, my best friend smokes and she is avoiding all smoking in my presence. Last night we met up in town and were going back to mine to watch a movie. She pretended that she had to do something for five minutes with her car so that I would not even know that she was sneaking in a smoke!! I only found out because I kept insisting that I would wait with her until she broke down and admitted shamefacedly that she was waiting for me to go before having a cigarrette. There are certain people, very unlike her, who I will definitely avoid being around because they are the ones who will say "aghh go on, it is only the one" etc. The crazy thing is, I really think that they think that the are doing you a favour.

Anyway, I gotta go, have loads of things to do today and this evening I will be preening myself in anticipation of a great night on the town.

    Talk soon,

    xxxx

Well done to everybody for giving up cigarettes. I used Champix as soon as they were released on the Irish market! I was asking my doctor for a prescription for them before he even knew about them!

The cravings did take a few months to go but they eventually became annoying rather than a threat to smoke a cigarette! I've also found over the last few months that if I'm feeling stressed, cigarettes are the last thing I think about! Strangely enough the only times now I think I want a cigarette is when I'm bored or waiting. But to be honest, I really don't think I will smoke again cos I don't want to have to give them up again!!

    I haven't smoked in.....

One year, nine months, four weeks, one day, 17 hours, 20 minutes and 47 seconds. 16768 cigarettes not smoked, saving €5,911.11. Life saved: 8 weeks, 2 days, 5 hours, 20 minutes.:)

Well Donnie I'm glad to hear things are'nt as bad as they could be, best of luck for Monday.
SMK & Tatoo Man, nice to hear more views on Champix, I'm sticking the course but find 2 tablets a day are sometimes too much for me, I've been getting an upset stomach a lot so some days, I'm doing without the second tab. No effects so far.
No major cravings the past 2 days and as already mentioned, I get the worst ones when bored not when under pressure, you would think it'd be the other way round! when I say "worst", these cravings are not even that bad.
Kahlan, you're doing great, lucky you with a patient friend, thankfully, I'm not around my "serious Smoking" friend that much so I'll just be careful at the next gathering. I used to do what your friend does for you to my serious smoker friend when she was off the fags HUH no fair!

I found if I took the table with a meal my stomach didn't get upset.

Tattoo Man, I don't see why you should not be allowed a second go at Champix just because you have a medical card. I know the tablets are expensive but it would be well worth asking your doctor for another prescription.

Hey Tatoo Man & SMK! Thanks for the input that's a great help. Now we know what to do and not to do for sure. I agree, I think the Doctor shouldn't hesitate to give you a new prescription just to see that you DO quit. My Doctor was delighted when I asked for my second prescription.

    Hey everyone,

So I went out last night and had a great night, I wasn't tempted to smoke until my friend who was off the cigarrettes started smoking. I ended up taking a puff and then giving it back to her. Does that count as smoking?? I have no desire to be back on the smokes at all now and feel happy that I didn't smoke any more.

Also, I am going to Rome tomorrow and won't be back for a week, so can't wait until I get back so that I can read all your posts for the week. Good luck, and steer clear of temptation!!! ( I really should listen to myself more often - I should have stuck with the water but the club was giving out free champagne and strawberries, and I just couldn't say no, one thing led to another and baby guinnesses were added to the mix along with a couple of bottles of bud - I am really paying for my decadence today!!;))

Talk to you all in a weeks time!!

Hi everyone & yes it is day 28 off the smokes. I am so happy. Champix is amazing, yes, I'm having some mild symptoms but not so bad that I'm stopping just yet. I had the worst nightmare ever last night & it seemed to last for ages, I could'nt believe how relieved I felt when I woke & realised it was just a champix dream. My tummy cant handle 2 tabs a day so I'm now taking just one in the mornings as the indigestion & heartburn is too much for me. I am amazed that I only got these symptoms in the last week or so and not at the beginning, maybe it's to do with a build up of the drug in my system. Anyway I'll see how I get on taking just the one tab for this week.
Thanks for the motillium advice, I may buy some if tummy is still upset this week on one tab rather than 2.
Kahlan I'm jealous, hope you have a lovely time in Rome & dont worry I would'nt count one puff as a proper smoke. You can make a wish for all of us to keep off the smokes in the Trevvy Fountain, & a special one for Donnie tio make a speedy recovery after tomorrow.
Tatooman I hope your Doc says yes, tell him you want to give it a serious shot this time. If he says no, ask him for a prescription out of your own money thats how serious you are! He's sure to say yes. It's cheaper than cigarettes in the long run!

Thanks Tatooman the time has really flown since i've been off them. I cant stand them now, it's an odd feeling seeing as I smoked since I was 14 yrs old but it's also a great feeling & the smell is so nasty I can detect it off people who dont smoke but whose partners do YUCK!!
This is my year of kicking all the nasties in the nuts :D

Hi Everyone, Thanks Poutbutton for the wish at trevvy fountain and Kahlan you sure are a busy young lady. Ahh those were the days to be constantly on the go! Hope you have a great time in Rome! And to all the rest of you, you've all been really supportive and kind. I'm really happy that I stumbled on to this "thread" even though I didn't realize it was based in Ireland. I haven't found anything to equal it here in the U.S. THANKS FOR BEING THERE!! I really enjoy all the posts!

Hi Donnie & glad to have you on board! I was a new user before I started this thread I never expected to get as many replies from it. I wondered how other nationalities joined in, With it being called boards.ie the .ie signifies Ireland on the net, I assumed we were all connected and that maybe you were on boards.com or something & they all joined up :pac:
I dont question technology as long as it works I'm happy LOL
I guess a google search of Champix maybe shows this thread up....
How are you feeling? You are nearing your 3rd month on the wonder drug now are'nt you?

Hi Poutbutton, L.O.L. I thought the I.E. after Boards meant "for example" like you'd use i.e. in a sentence!:D Oh well live and learn! See I'm really learning something from you Irish.
I'm feeling good. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Shouldn't be to bad except for some discomfort. The physician's assistant mentioned there would be some scarring. I told him "I'm too old to worry about scarring! I'll just call them War Wounds!"

Thats good, your positive attitude is admirable. I would'nt be worried about scars either as long as everything was ok. I googled champix and our thread came up first on the list! No wonder there have been so many views. I read through some of the other sites on the subject & there's some amount of negative tales, I'm still wary of it but singing it's praises at the same time. 1 month and I am sickly but not bad enough to go off just yet. It's great you're half way I cant wait to get there!:)

Just thought I'd share this because we have been discussing it recently. GETQUIT has cut down their emails to once a week. This is the one for Week 7:

    02/16/2009
By now you've learned and used many of the Quit Strategies that work best for you, but staying away from cigarettes can still be a challenge. Here in the next phase of GETQUIT, you’ll continue to get useful information designed to help you stay on track.
    Close

    Details
Now that you've been quitting for a while, we'll be helping you learn to keep avoiding cigarettes. We'll also be talking about some really interesting health benefits you may not know about. So keep coming back every week, because you don't know what you might be missing.

Do you feel like a nonsmoker now? Perhaps your thoughts about smoking are fading. So maybe you think your quit journey is over.

Well, not quite. You might be feeling confident now. But something could always happen — stressful or unexpected — that could create an urge.

That's the reason we offer GETQUIT for up to a year. No matter what comes up for you in the weeks and months to come, you'll have our support that's designed to help you get through it.

That's also why it's so important for you to take CHANTIX for the full 12 weeks. It can reduce the urge to smoke. And remember, CHANTIX is a non-nicotine pill. CHANTIX targets nicotine receptors in the brain, attaches to them, and blocks nicotine from reaching them.

Sticking with CHANTIX as prescribed by your doctor has been proven to help people quit smoking. Studies show 44% of people who took CHANTIX for a full 12 weeks were quit at the end of those 12 weeks, compared to about 18% of those who took sugar pills."

I think I just had my first day with no cravings none what so ever even after 90 minutes of intense noise at work {this occurs fortnightly} where after I always used to be dying for a smoke to reward myself for tolerating it! I'm impressed.
I've gotten totally addictied to my ipod better than nicotene eh
I found this yesterday did'nt get through much of it but it's interesting stuff if you're up for the read

I'm in the process of doing some research online at the moment, but for those of you who have started taking it recently, can you please let me know how much the 2 week starter kit costs please? And also, if you'd be so kind as to tell me how much it is a month thereafter, that would be great too!

I know it will be cheaper than feeding my 20-30 a day habit, but just wanted to check out the costs in advance so I can budget accordingly.

    Thanks in advance!

Hi eves if you read through this thread from the beginning {It's Long at this stage!} you will find out anything you wanted to know.
Basically you dont get a 2 week starter pack you get a months worth of pills you smoke for the first week then stop on the 8th day or any day you choose in the 2nd week. I was ready to stop by day 8. I could'nt wait in fact. Some people go on until day 14 but by then fags taste gross & you really are wasting your time! Each pack costs €125 but you will qualify for the drug payment scheme, {bring your PPS number to your chemist} then you will only pay €100 per pack so in all €300 for the 3 months.
Congrats and best of luck as you start the course, pop in here and lt us know how you get along.
we've all found it really supportive being able to talk to others in the same boat.
    :)

Donnie glad to hear you are ok and fighting the nicotene still! :)

Thanks and apologies for my lazy-ass thread skimming!

As soon as I get the prescription and set my quit date I'll be back on to let you know how I go. From what I've read on this thread, the medication does seem to help significantly. I've tried everything from NRT to Allen Carr to hypnotherapy at this point so need all the help I can get. I did manage to stay off them for 3 months the first time I had hypnotherapy so I know I can get over the initial stages - I just need to get to the point where I can get off them long-term.

I was the same, nothing else works as well as Champix. The side effects are a hot topic but even though I've had some, I'm still on it. Do read the thread when you have time it tells all.
Will be glad to have you on board with the rest of us, we've built up a little posse at this stage. All fighting the same battle.

Hi Evs, Welcome to the Gang! Poutbutton pretty well covered it. The cost of the program is pretty much the same here in U.S. Dollars. But it's well worth it considering the cost of smokes these days and here in the U.S. they keep raising the Cigarette Tax!
Fortunately I've had no side adverse side effects with the exception of occasional dreams. The secret is to take as directed. Make sure you don't take the pill on an empty stomach. GOOD LUCK!! and keep in touch!!

    Hi guys,
just spent the last while reading the thread. Just started taking champix today and plan to quit on day 8. The posts give me hope for success but i hope the side effects dont effect me too bad. I feel a lot more prepared for whats to come from your posts. Thanks. Might pop in every now and again jus to kno there others in the same boat. On my numerous previous attempts (none using champix) I had no support base so think this could help. :)

Yep, ok, I will join in too then :) Well done to all of you so far -I am on day 8 - first day of 2 x blue ones - (decided I will stop day 10) but honestly I have had one cigarette today, and it was FOUL so may stop sooner!

I have had some of the side effects -mainly nausea after taking the tablet, but food before taking it really helps. Very dry mouth, as if someone has wiped the insides of my cheeks with a towel -but not particularly thirsty! And a horrid horrid taste in the mouth, not metallic really but more like washing up liquid:eek: I wanna be a NON SMOKERRRRRRRRR!!! :D:D:D

    I'm GONNA be a NON SMOKERRRRRRRRR!!! :D:D:D

Right, I've smoked my last cigarette. But only because I had it here, not because I wanted to -how dim is that. And it was mank, to boot.;) YAY!

    Hello again Bunnyaloo,
I just re-read your post. I've also been off cigs since January. NO don't stop the pills without consulting with your Doctor. It's suggested that you complete the 12 week program. There are a few who became complacent because they longer cared to smoke, quit the pills, and ended up back on the smokes. Do not stop on your own unless you want to end up back on the nicotine.

    Bunnybaloo,
I actually took the tablets for six months! I took them for three months before I stopped smoking - during that time, I had cut down cigarettes from 25 a day to about 8-9 a day but I just couldn't make the decision to stop for good! I suppose I didn't believe that this little tablet would work! But eventually I did and when I was stopped smoking for three months, I took a further month to wean off the tablets. I was just so nervous that I would smoke again once the tablets stopped. Now I know there was probably no need to wean off the tablets for so long, but I just wanted to be sure! Best of luck

    Hi folks
Great to see all the new members giving Champix a twirl, Good luck to everyone of you, it's a brilliant aid to stopping, stick with the course & you will be a non smoker in no time. Over a month down the line now & the Cravings do still happen but not half as strong as with any other quitting programme.
Well I had a crazy busy day/night I finally got my car back all fixed & firing on all cylinders :D thank God for good friends in the motor trade! I did'nt feel any cravings all day but you guessed it, as soon as I got home a little while ago Bam! Craving! It lasted about 20 minutes on and off but is now gone. It almost felt like I was missing smoking  Daft idea!
I'm only taking one pill a day now as my tummy was constantly upset, glad to report that all is well now, no more feeling ill all day and I sleep better & any cravings I do get are not increased in intensity, frequency or strength. So taking the dose over 24 hours rather than 12 seems to be working for me.....so far.
    This will mean I will be on the course for longer but I think it will be worth it so I'll really feel able to fight off temptation when I go off the drug completely so yep I've reduced my daily dosage but will still be on the same level as anyone else longterm, just always 24 hours behind :) {now I'm confusing myself...you know what I mean}
Anyone have any crazy champix Dreams to report? I had a night terror last time & cant remember it now I'm glad I cant it was awful. I'm due a good one now surely......

Hiya SMK, did the last pack come like the first pack with 2 weeks of 1mg and then the last 2 weeks 0.5mg? If that's the case, I'll be chopping my 0.5s in half! Only joking, just curious to know what the final pack looks like or is it all 1.0mg & you go "cold turkery" off Champix? I assume it is'nt addictive anyway so we should'nt have to wean ourselves off it. Perhaps it's the sign of us being true addicts thinking we have to get off it by degrees  almost like getting out of bed on a cold morning..easy does it.
