Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

We might as well get started on this thread now as its usually popped up by now.
I created a route but as usual its open to suggestions and alterations.
I've thrown in a few of 2016's greatest hits, Cunard road,The Wall,Red lane and then the loop of four climbs in the middle will be done from the opposite direction this time.
Then its up Liam Horner and we finish off we an nice easy climb up burrow road to Johnny Foxes.
Think of it as a hybrid of the two previous years events;)
Its about 15-17 climbs depending on what you count as a climb.

June bank holiday weekend. Gives an extra day to recover

Traditionally held on the day before the WW200 - so the WW200 can be done as a recovery ride.

The Full Wall and Red Lane before you hit 60km. I'm in :p

Was on the June bank holiday this year. Haven't they changed the w200 to that weekend also?

Anyway the date can be sorted to suit the masses

That's a given daragh that you'll be there.
The first 100km is the, if it's not 15% it's not in edition.

Time to finally climb that bleeding Red Lane, I was only going down there a few times and it was bad enough.

    And no Lake Drive!

Not too sure if I can make it on the day, traditionally ;)

Would you like to make up the charter of excuses for the day or should i. :)

And i think most would be happy with no lake drive, Its bloody energy sapping but the few short climbs will easily make up for it.

Red lane isn't that tough (says the guy who's never completed more than 25% of an Evil :P )

Next year Colm?. You have plenty of 100+ km spins this year so you should well be able for it.

Agree, the very steep part is fairly short.

It's not nearly as bad as that little climb south of Laragh where you cross a river at a beautiful little church. (Clara?) It was in the 2016 Evil and I came very close to doing the walk of shame there.

I'll tell everyone I am going all year and then just not show up and not post in the thread again, every year so far, why break with tradition.

You almost make the combination sound attractive D.

Maybe 2018 is finally the year for the Evil?

Hopefully the link works? Few slight amendments would bring you might closer to 5k climbing for not many more total km.

OK, it was worth the extra 500m to go over 5k.

Its only a small diversion in the difference in both routes so i'd say it depends on how the legs are on the day.

4400 i'd reckon will be enough for me unless my year drastically improves.

Any tips on prolonging Garmin battery life...still undecided on the Evil route to take on the day the 5000m version is calling.
A long day in the saddle and going by last week battery life isn't what it should be...

Generally I turn all sensors off, light levels to min and bring a spare battery pack with me.

When you say spare battery pack Godtabh I wasn't aware of the option?
Looking at Marmotte in July and got a fright Saturday only (5 hours out and near drained from full charge)....I had every thing sensor wise connected tbf...
5000m Evil will be roughly 10 hours....

For a length of ride you do 1/2 times a year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,483 ✭✭✭Macy0161

The official garmin extra battery is only for the 1030 isn't it? Battery life is why I went Bolt, that might've changed if it would fit other models...

Anyway, I'm more tempted by the Evil that I should be, but won't know until much nearer the time. Also, see how I get on with MB200!

I have a few I got for free at a meeting. They aren't huge but I can fit four in one pocket and barely notice them.

It depends on the USB cable. If it's power only it's fine, but if it's power and data it'll reset. You can buy power only cables or mod the cable with tape.

I've heard from club colleagues that some of the more recent Garmins don't reset regardless of what USB cable is connected. (Probably better to try it on an inconsequential ride such as a commute first).
