I have a Dell Latitude 7270 which I was thinking of running 24/7 as a mobile hotspot.

What sort of energy would that use?

check the wattage of the power adaptor as a start.

most laptops use 15 to 45 watts

It says 65 watts on adaptor. I do read in places that running a hotspot is power hungry but still not sure what that means.

    It won't be 65W.

65W is enough to run the laptop at full tilt AND charge the pack slowly.

    - Screen off
    - HDD off
    - CPU downclocked
    - Fans low

Might only be 12-15W if you did it right but you'd want to run PFSense or some other cut down OS so windows isn't idly doing useless tasks and burning juice. If you booted off an SD/USB the drive could stay permanently parked.
