Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Trying to get terrestrial TV

    Hi,

    I have a Phillips 6200 series TV. Its awful, I don't recommend (quality is great but interface is dire and apps barely work).

    Anyway, I'm trying to get RTE1/2/3. Just some basic channels.

    I assume that this TV is new enough that I don't need a Saorview box. Specs are here.

    Previous residents had TV working, but via a virgin media box.

    I have the following :

    Coax from "TV" socket in wall -> Splitters ->
    -> One coax into Virgin media router for internet (working)
    -> One coax into "Sat" socket on TV (only socket that will take coax, not working).


    When I try to search for channels, none are being found (DVB-C && DVB-T).

    Can anyone offer any assistance in solving this please?

    Any help hugely appreciated as my wife is about to murder me. Thanks.

    The TV socket on wall is for Virgin (i.e. cable). You'll need to connect to an aerial to pick up Saorview. If you're close to a transmitter you might get away with one of those little ones you can pick up in Argos/Tescos (I'm in Cork City, and that works for me). Otherwise you'll have to go with an aerial on roof/in attic. You might have one already on house, so worth having a snoop around.

    The specs. of that TV (link supplied by you, P.3 'Connections') shows a socket labelled 'TV Antenna'. That is the connection for the TV Aerial. Which is what you will need if you want to get the Irish channels without dealing with Virgin Media or Sky.

    There's so much wrong.

    You are trying to get terrestrial channels but have connected a cable into the TV 'satellite' connection from a paid for service providers wall socket. You haven't performed a single logical step!

    Depending on where you are and what services you actually want, you can start with a digital Aerial and plug it into the correct connector in the TV or use an old sky satellite if one exists, for UK free sat.

    If you want both and there's no existing connections, a professional is probable your best bet and they are usually reasonable enough in price.

    There is NO SUCH THING as a digital aerial. But yes he needs an aerial as has been said twice.
    A sky satellite dish is no use for RTE which is what he asked for.

    No, he said basic channels. BBC is basic. I also said it could help him get freesat, no mention of rte from me.

    You need an aerial that can recieved digital TV. Not all Aerials can. I do apologise for trying to be absolutely clear.

    If you want to be 'absolutely clear', couldn't you just say to use a suitable UHF TV aerial?

    Also, even though that TV will allow you to tune in & view free-to-air satellite channels, it won't provide any of the features added by actual Freesat, such as a proper EPG.

    I could but considering his approach would you be confident that the op would understand UHF? Better to use plain language and a Google search of 'digital Aerial' gets the needed response.

    True but he didn't say he wanted any of that and is clearly content to just use a TV. I have freesat in my TV, no need for epg because I generally only use it when I know what I'm looking for. Actually I'm not even sure it doesn't have it. I'll need to check

    RTE is basic. BBC is foreign channels in Ireland.

    All TV aerials can receive digital TV. An aerial just receives radio/TV signals. It cannot differentiate between digital or analogue.

    He never said anything about satellite.

    A Google search of digital aerial give loads of rubbish aerials.

    Nope, not all Aerials. You need to be able to receive uhf channels.

    BBC is a basic channel on my opinion. From the context of the op, I don't think he wanted a certain set of channels. Just something watchable at the moment and again, I was just giving him options as many houses have old dishes in the side that people never consider as they just think 'that's for sky'. Unless he really is looking for rte 3 but I think he might be waiting for that

    What's your point about Google searches?

    Have you tried a small indoor TV ariel? Depending on your location it may work. External obviously is always better
