I Will vs The End - I like I Will, there's very little wrong with it and the fact that the bassline is just Paul singing it himself is cool.

I find some of The End a bit cheesy. That drum solo is pretty lame really, supposedly he didn't want to do it and the final and "in the end" outro is a bit underwhelming - but I do love the three boys sharing guitar licks in the middle: Paul first, then George, then John - they repeat that sequence three times. It's cool because you can tell who is playing what - Paul is the most musical, George is the most flashy and John is the most earthy. I'll grant it's not mind-blowing guitar wankery, but it's very satisfying - the parts play off each other really well and say a lot about the players and their contrasts and styles very efficiently.

I'm Looking Through You vs I Saw Her Standing There -

I was all like, hey, maybe I'll vote for I'm Looking Through You, it's pretty cool - the warm sound of the acoustic, the guitar work, the thigh slaps for percussion and the lyrics are unusually complex for McCartney at that time. But, who am I kidding...

I Saw Her Standing There still absolutely bangs today; in 1963 this was pure dripping raw sex. You can still feel the heat off it; back then it must have sounded like an atom bomb going off.

Ah, it's such a good song - that bouncing perpetual motion of it, the rhythm going along goodo the whole time and that brittle, dry, but still rocking guitar is so seductive and the vocal hooks are perfection itself. Put this on and people will still get up and dance to it and if you've had enough to drink you'll sing along to the "...held her hand in myinnne" line. I said earlier when talking about Helter Skelter that Paul can't rock - maybe I was harsh, his vocals are fairly lusty and full throated here and definitely help to make the song.

Yes It is vs Penny Lane - I'm going to stick up for Yes It Is here because it's unfortunately not getting a look in against the juggernaut that is Penny Lane. Those three part vocal harmonies are ridiculously good, so enveloping, but yet also weirdly dissonant - compliments the lyrics perfectly; a love song, but with suggestions of unhappiness and dissatisfaction - and those guitar swells that come and go help add to the atmospheric sense of out of whack dreaminess. This tune deserves a bit more love.

I'm sure there will be plenty to say about Penny Lane in future rounds.

Flying vs Money (That's What I Want) - Not much to say about Flying really. It's cool enough and appropriately slightly out of its gourd sounding, but it's a bit throwaway and feels like it ends just when it's beginning to get going.

Money is great and never gets old. Lennon could rock and he sells the shit out of it. The drums get a fair slapping, the piano a fair bashing, the guitars sound appropriately frantic and nervy. The dynamics are great too - that extra oomph the song gets after Lennon's scream about a minute in, the sudden arrival of loads of cymbals during the final headlong rush.
