Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

You probably should have made a public counter application. Current turnaround times are 10 working days for online. You've only given yourself 8 before your travel.

    https://www.dfa.ie/passporttracking/turnaroundtimes/

Ya, passport tracker says estimated issue date is June 17.
Due to travel on June 14.
Current passport expires on June 15.
Any advice on what I should do now.?
    Thanks.

If I'm applying for a passport in my married name for the first time, do I need to send the original marriage cert or will a photocopy do?

May I ask if the Irish passport card is acceptable for renting a car within EU/EEA? Or does it have to be the passport book?

I know most car rental companies only require a driving licence anyway, but I just don’t want to risk being turned down in case someone doesn’t accept the passport card as a valid ID?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭Credit Checker Moose

Never been asked for passport to rent anywhere in the EU. I wouldn't worry about it. Just check their Terms and Conditions beforehand.

Ironically the only time I was asked for a passport is when I rented a car in Ireland - Kerry airport. That staff also charged me 120 euro extra without mentioning anything in the whole process. I thought it was just a deposit until a few weeks after, and had to start a nasty email exchange with their head office to get my money back.

I have rented numerous times in other EU countries and have never been asked for a passport, but I wasn’t sure if they are legally allowed to request for a passport as ID.

My kids passport is out of date, we are travelling by boat to France on the 22nd of June.

Is there a quick way to get a new passport for him before then.

Express is 15 days and that's too tight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 734 ✭✭✭longgonesilver

Renewals online has been very fast for adults. You can start the process for children but signed consent forms have to be posted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 62 ✭✭Nutser

You should go with the paperwork to the passport office. You can make appointments on line to go in for an emergency passport and will need to bring proof of travel. I wouldn't risk sending it in now as I don't think you would receive it in time.

Current turnaround time for online renwal applications is 10 working days. For child applications, an identity & consent form must be signed & witnessed and posted to the Passport Office. This form is available for you to print during the online application process. The 10 day turnaround time starts from the day the identity & consent form is received & registered by the Passport Service.

Shorter turnaround times are offered at the Passport Office's public counters. As your travel date is outside the 10 day online turnaround window, a counter application is your best option. You will need to book this appointment online at

    www.passportappointments.ie

Make sure you read and understand the Ts & Cs and pay close attention to the document requirements and fees.

If your child's passport has expired by more than 5 years the application will be treated as a first time application and will take longer to process.

I'm due to go to America in 4 weeks.with my wife and 2 kids...got my esta Visas sorted and just discovered that the date of birth is wrong on my daughters passport..(wrong month)we have flown 3 times with this in Europe...with the esta visas approved ..will I be ok
    Regards b

I really, REALLY wouldn't take a chance with this.

If it turns out to be an issue you could be turned away at Dublin airport. That's your entire holiday ruined.

You still have time if you get on top of this now.

    1) How in god's name did that happen in the first place and how are you only noticing now???

    2) Everything on the ESTA needs to match the passport. Get a new ESTA with the same DOB on it as the passport.

    3) An ESTA isn't a visa.

Sort the passport out when you get home.

I wouldn't risk rocking up to pre clearance for the states with this. They take information issues like thismoinda seriously.

It would be great if that would do the job..new esta.and sort passport out later ...

    Original documents only!

Filled out the form today, got all the Garda bits done, old passport and marriage cert. And put it in an envelope and stuck it in the postbox. And now my husband tells me you can't send an application by normal post, it has to be through the post office. Is he right? I'm literally having a nervous breakdown.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭Credit Checker Moose

    He is correct.

They only accept mailed applications via passport express in the post office.

  • Registered Users Posts: 27 Sam Wang

That’s correct. As per DFA website,
Passport Express service, is the only acceptable postal method for submitting your passport application.

Why on earth would you want to put all original documents in a normal envelope? It should at least be registered mail even if you don’t know about the passport express.

Also why not using online renewal? It’s cheaper and quicker and you don’t even need to go to the Garda station. I literally finished my application in under 10 minutes on Friday.

    What you can do now:

Post boxes normally have a collection time displayed on them. You can wait there before that time and ask the postman to return that letter to you. That’s apparently the safest option.

Alternatively, wait for a few days and then call the passport office or use the online chat to see whether they have received your application. If they do, at least they can send it back to you and you can do them the proper way. I hope you recorded your application number at the very least.

She is doing a change of name which cannot be done online. :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 27 Sam Wang

You still can apply for it online. As part of that, there will be instructions as to how to send your documents over.

Good luck then. I’d definitely try to get it back before the postman takes them from the post box. They are too valuable and too risky to be sent without a tracking number.

  • Registered Users Posts: 934 ✭✭✭Recliner

Can't get them back from the post box. Had a quick look on the dfa site which, yes, I should have done at the start. They'll return the application to me, so it's fine.

I personally think phone calls are more efficient than web chats, although both are very difficult to get to depending on the time of the day.

  • Registered Users Posts: 284 ✭✭butrasgali

Not a hope getting through to the passport office or live chat..just going to cancel and do new esta and put the matching date from the passport on it so both will be the same....travel agents have said this will be ok..as well as above..🀞

I'd be very wary of giving false info on the ESTA also. Are you anywhere near a passport office, that you could call in to?

    Hope you get sorted.

They will reject the ESTA if you change the date of birth of one person but keep the rest the same. You need to sort out the passport not try to scam the ESTA.

That's a really bad idea, making a false declaration on the ESTA could land you in jail and banned from visiting the states. Fix the passport instead.

He seems intent on asking for help, completely ignoring the advice he's given and doing what he wants. I think it's best just to let him off and learn the hard way.

If the passport office made a mistake by putting the wrong date of birth, they would issue you a new one fairly fast, I wouldn’t be changing the ESTA, as they are very strict, I’d be sorting out the passport, your going to need to do it anyway.
How did you not figure it out before now though, with checking into flights ect?

That’s a bit unfair. He’s probably a bit flustered by this and is getting some conflicting advice. I can understand why he’s done what he has done, even if I would disagree with it.

Just got an official response from Enterprise-rent-a-car in Finland:
I can immediately confirm that per the HEL policies, “Besides the driver's license, renters from countries other than Finland will need to present a valid passport at the rental counter as proof of identity.”

Not according to them:) there’s a bit of back and forth but essentially they argue that the passport card is just like those national identification cards issued by other EU countries. Not gonna argue with them any more.

Does anyone know when you do an online application but need to send backup docs with the application (it’s a child’s renewal) how long does it generally take for the application to update that they’ve received the documents? I sent mine just over a week ago but they haven’t been added to the online tracker yet.

Hi there. My son's passport is expired but it is also damaged. Last time we used it the dog took an inch out the front cover and 2 inches out of the back the rest is still intact. No damage to inside pages or bio page.
I have an emergency appointment in Dublin tomorrow morning and I'm worried they will class it as damaged and not issue on the same day.
I was due to fly out to Spain for my sister in laws wedding Monday morning but panic set in last night when we realised his passport is expired so I've rebooked flights for Tuesday evening.

Does it matter if the passport is damaged if it's expired.

He's 9 with ASD and intellectual disability I'm hoping they will look kindly on us. He's super excited and it's taken alot of prep to get him ready for it.

    Thanks

Damage and expiry are not grounds for same day. Death and medical circumstances and genuine emergencies are. At least you've booked Tuesday evening so next day is an option. Fingers crossed

You need to go online the day before at 12.30pm they release the appointments then. 30 available.
Saying that I was there at 10 and there was a woman walking around offering people appointments who were travelling tomorrow, so if you can just rock up and see what happens.

Really impressed with the service. Saved my trip and I honestly thought Saturday night no way we were making that wedding. Long bloody day up since 5.30 but I'll be in Spain tomorrow evening so I'm very happy tonight.
