Guys, just want to make people aware of this.

I renewed my house insurance with fbd. I'd a few questions to ask them one of which included my bike. It's worth about 800euros and kept in my shed. The person I was dealing with went away and checked that it would be insured and when they came back they said that it couldn't be included on the house insurance as it was considered professional as I took it to races.

Has anyone ever heard anything like this?

What insurance do people use for their bikes?

    Thanks

Last month I saw a new specialist Irish cycling insurance company posted on the cycling forum. I'll dig out a link for it in a bit.

all our bikes and boats are on our AIB home insurance. We needed to name all the items valued over €1000 and there is a small premium per item over the amount.

See, I think the problem is when I said that I brought the bike to races. I'd suspect that a lot of people will be the same.

Mines worth 2k and it's included in the household insurance at no extra cost (but only if taken from the house) - paid an additional small premium to have it insured while outside the house also.

I think this is just the case with FBD, my bike was insured when I ha insurance with Hibernian when I moved to FBD they said it wouldn't be insured.

My Home Insurance (RSA) won't cover you while racing or training... but it will cover it if it's taken from the shed for example... There is a policy you can get through either Cycling Ireland or Triathlon Ireland which will cover it if damaged racing / training.

Checked Triathlon Ireland website and it costs 115euro to insure bike which is f*cking ridiculous.

Feeling very cross about this whole. Honest to Christ, steer clear of fbd.

In process of doing that. Have already spoken to insurance ombudsman but there's no joy.

Our insurance policy only covers bikes if taken from the house or garden.
This is standard. The bikes can be added as a specific named all-risk item with
an extra premium. Again, AFAIK, this is standard. It is certainly the case for everyine I know that has insured their bike.

The last time I priced it, a few years ago, the premium was about 8-10% of the value of the bike.

Have you asked how much it would be to insure an €800 bike, which was for recreational use only. It would be interesiting to know how much extra they charge for a "professional" bike.

I know the OP is cross at FBD, but I haven;t seen any evidence that they are acting any differently than the rest of the insurance industry.

huskerdu, sorry I didn't explain myself properly.

I wouldn't expect the bike to be covered away from the house.

Fbd are refusing to cover the bike when it's actually at the house.

Apparently going to a few races a year make it a "professional" use bike (not enough f'ing rolly eyes) so they're refusing to cover it at all on the house insurance.

I was on to AIB yesterday about adding a bike to the house insurance, they will insure bikes to the value of €2000. they will not pay a claim for €2000 if the bike is worth more. Mine is 2299 so I had to get a seperate policy :(

Mine cost an additional €10 a yr to add to my Aviva home insurance policy (bike valued @ €1000)

I think i'm with 123.ie. 4 bikes in the house, cost to replace them like for like with new would be about €500, €1000, €1350 and €2500.

They won't insure them if they are being used for competition. I think thats fair enough, why should they replace a bike that I wrote off while racing?

Also, insurance excess on replacement bikes was about €500. Thats more than 3 of them or currently worth in their second hand state, so all in all the insurance was not worth going for.
