Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Looking for information on 2009 Mercedes engine I'm new to these engines and my engine went. Timing chain went and smashed all. My question is about engine codes mine is 271.956 and I can get an engine looks the same for an 05 model with code 271.941 and just wondering is there any difference. Thanks

is you car BlueEFFICIENCY? if yes then it will have some differences, if not you might be ok.

check this link re spec - seem the same but wiring harness would be what it would want to double check

Even if you buy 271.956 then there is load of variations. Easy 20 different part codes + load of replacement codes. The easiest way are to find the exactly the same 271.956 (and the right part number). It is nightmare if you buy a random engine because you may need to adjust a engine mounts, make a gearbox mounting plate(or other gearbox) and the drive shaft adjustment. The cherry on the top are the electronics. You may need that specific random engine ECU/ECM. And that all are just the beginning. 100% sure you need re-engineer the wiring harness.

May be easier are to rebuild the engine. It can cost too high price but you are on DIY section and you can save all the labor cost :D

So your saying to stick with code 271.956 same as what I have I should be ok

271.956 and the right part number, then you are 100% safe (only use the old ECM because there is your car key code). Different engine code and/or part number, be 100% sure you do not fry something.

Asked an engine expert that does Mercedes engine rebuilds and he said as it's a 271.xxx it will fit no problem with all of my engine bits

Any pointers on taking engine out? Looks like can't take engine without box so. Will I pull front off try that way or drop from bottom? Thanks in advance

If at all possible rebuild your engine. If the chain snapped you'll need to pull the head off, get the valves etc replaced refit onto block with new chain and associated bits. It will actually be easier for you in the long run.

For anyone interested I bought a M271 engine. Just said I'd take chance. Both was 271 but rest of digits where different. Everything was plug and play with no problems only for the inlet manafold had one extra pipe on older engine out of a 2003 model.

From all the research I was doing if engine did go in future buy a pre 2005 because 2005 and after have cam sprockets more prone to wear as well. Priced cam at €1500 don't no how Wright I am about that. But if I was you I'd be thinking about doing chain near 200,000 km again I could be over doing it be cheaper than engine replace

In Casttlecomer, there is a Mercedes specialist, Ned Kelly. Google Ned Kelly Cars, KIlkenny for contact details, and give him a call. He has been working on Mercedes Benz cars for the last 30-40 years or so, and what he does not know about them is not worth knowing. Give him a call, and tell him your story, won't cost you anything see what he say's. He's not unreasonable to deal with either..
