Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Timing chain replacement interval?

Total newbie here, so be gentle...

We have a 141 Seat Leon 1.2tsi, bought it in 2016 with 42K miles on clock, only 55K miles on clock now (low usage city driving). Looking at service manual it says replace timing chain every 120Kilometers or 5 years.
So should we be looking at getting it done now (its due a service) or could we wait a bit longer?
Had it serviced by Seat themselves in last 2 years (1 minor and 1 full).

Is the 5 year interval a hard limit, or could it be stretched?

    TIA
    WW

It's either or. The age limit is as important as mileage. I wouldn't be taking any chances with the timing chain - though I'm surprised being a chain that it has such a low recommended interval (or one at all).

Maybe check with Seat though, sometimes they change recommendations for the intervals.

Check with the exact engine code but a lot of those 1.2 engines had timing chains which should last the life of the car. If you call the dealer with the reg they should tell you if it has a chain or not.

Do you mean belt op??? Is it definitely a chain thought those engines were belt driven

A 141 should have a timing belt, the last chain driven 1.2 TSi's finished in 2012.

The belt interval is 120k kms or 5 years with Seat and Audi, but interestingly the same engine and belt in a VW the interval is 210k kms with no age limit. For resale of the car and keeping up a good history you should get it done but I wouldnt fret about doing it bang on 120k or 5 years.

The chains in the older 1.2's were intended for life but were remarkably **** and you were lucky if they lasted 50-60k kms.

If you ring a main dealer and give them your reg they should be able to give you the details on intervals.

Don`t take a chsnce. You are already almost 2 years over your recommended time. I`ve lost a car this way and I would never be caught again. Ended up selling an 07 car in 2013 for €300 scrap

We got lucky. We have a zafira where the timing belt is due to be replaced every 6 years. Ours missed the change at 6 years, and that fact was only noticed when it was due the replacement at 12 years. It's low mileage, at only 145000 km, but it was definitely a case of pushing our luck. The garage were saying it should be framed and kept for posterity.
