Plenty of recommendations in this thread - but also it might be useful if you gave people a price range/area/things that interest you..they might have more luck matching you up with a place that suits your needs.

    Otherwise it's all just guesswork

Hi, travelling to london for the weekend, fri to mon, with my wife and 3 kids(9,10 and 13),anybody know whats the best ticket for the underground?Probably stay in zones 1 and 2 with 1 trip to zone 5(northolt).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭maynooth_rules

The first underground station you go to, look for a machine where you can buy an oyster card, should only cost you about 2/3 pounds. If you cant find the machine ask at the desk. When you get the card go over to the top up machines, and put 10 or 20 pounds on it. The all you have to do is scan this card when going through the turnstiles at each station. Much cheaper than buying tickets and you will see when you are there that everyone uses the Oyster. Plus it works on buses

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

    Here is a good start - http://www.tfl.gov.uk/

I'm not sure if you'll need 5 Oyster cards, probably due to the check in/out nature of it.

Oyster fares are hugely cheaper than individual tickets, usually 70-80% cheaper.

You can pickup the cards either in shops or via machines, I think it's £5 each but this includes £3 credit and as mentioned also covers bus transport.

Top up machines are available in all tube stations as well, just touch the card off the reader to see what your balance is.

    Enjoy London :)

Children under 12 travelling with their parents don't need a ticket, so don't go off buying 5 Oysters whatever you do.

    Hi ppl,
Just a quick query, flying to standsted in a few days. Not been there for years, the flight back from Stansted is at 6:20 tues morning. The first train leaves Liverpool Street at 4:40, how long's the trip from the station in Standsted to the Ryanair gates, is security likely to be slow that hour of the morning? Wondering if I can take the train or is it cutting it really tight and would I be better off getting the coach from Liverpool St an hour earler?

Flying into Stansted at 23:10 on the 21st can i still book the express tickets for that day, If i don't get to the platform before midnight for whatever reason will I not be able to travel?

Also any recommendations on bars/clubs to hit Fri and/or Sat night? Somewhere along the lines of Cafe en Seine or Bruxelles maybe! Staying in Liverpool St area so gather I won't find much there! If I'm likely to be needing a taxi back after the night out (presume tubes will have stopped) how expensive will it be?

    Cheers if anyone can help.

    Sp

All I can help you with is the taxi fare! think it was around £13 for a taxi for 2 from leicester square area to liverpool street.

The only one I can think of is the Watercress line in Hampshire. you would need to get the train from Waterloo to Alton, which takes between one and one and a half hours. http://www.watercressline.co.uk/ it looks like trains only run on weekends in December, but they are Santa Specials so it could be a special occasion.

For train times from Waterloo to Alton, use www.nationalrail.co.uk

I'm going to London for 3 days in mid December and am trying to book a decent enough hotel for a reasonable amount of money. I appear to have a great deal from a website called Roomex but have never used that website before.
Has anyone used Roomex, and if so can you let me know how you got on?
I have used websites like Laterooms, Hotels.com etc before without problems, but this almost seems too good to be true...
    Thanks,
    John

Stumbled across your thread by accident.

Have never booked through the site myself, but I know the one of the two lads well who setup and runs the company and he's a stand up citizen.

Probably not much help to you but though I'd get the thread rolling!

    Hey dudes,

4 girls lookin for a 2 bed apartment during a 2 night stay in London next Feb - any suggestions?? I'm after looking through lastminute.ie and ebookers.ie but they mostly deal in hotels and the few apartments seem a good bit outside the city.

I found a few websites for apartments but the city centre ones are chronically expensive!! Surely there must be something available that is central and wont break the bank? Budget is €250 per night (between the 4 of us).

    Cheers in advance :D

I travel to London a lot and I think you are going to struggle to find what you are looking for in Central London especially for 2 nights. Apartments are common in the city centres in the US but have not yet caught on in the Uk.

    http://www.london.hotelsoffer.com/index.php

This website should help you find a decent hotel at a reasonable price.

Another place I have stayed is The Adria Hotel in Hammersmith which is cheap and cheerful and well located for Central London.

Then get a zone one and two weekly travel card which will cover you on the bus and tube

19 & 38 bus will take you into the west end, the 205 will take you to Madame Tussards and the

Angel tube station is in walking distance

When you come in from Stanstead get off at Tottenham hale and take the tube to Kings cross you are 3 minutes by taxi to Jurys then

Places like Camden market will be outside zones 1 & 2

In any case buy a tube map and remember when on the tube escalators

I'm travelling to London in a few weeks and have decided for various reasons to bring my own car. So my plan right now is to drive to somewhere close to London, as I don't fancy the idea of driving in Central London. Ideally, my final port of call would be a nice hotel close to a train station that would get me into say Victoria station in 30 mins.

I know this probably covers about 50 different places, but I'm just not sure where to start. How do I determine where is about 30mins by train from London? I tried the National Rail site, but it's not really suitable for this sort of search. Of course, I'd also like to avoid going to an area that's 30mins from London but is also, I dunno, murder town.

I'm just looking for some nice areas close enough to London to travel there each day of my trip, but far enough away that finding a nice hotel, and getting there without going completely bald is doable.

(PS: Looking around, 30mins might be optimistic, looks like I'd be still stuck in the city at that range, so maybe 60mins?)

Look first at the congestion charge zone; there are loads of nice areas around it e.g., Kensington, Knightsbridge, Park Lane, etc., . . If you are not bothered by the congestion charge then just drive straight into Mayfair from the motorway, assuming you have a satnav. TBH, your best bet to be within shouting distance of everywhere is somewhere along the Park Lane side of the congestion charge zone.

According to this, that whole area is slap bang in the middle of the congestion charge zone? I'd have to go as far west as say Shepherds Bush to avoid it? On top of that, I'd still be driving in London city somewhat.

I wasn't planning on getting a satnav, but the more I think about it, the more I think I'll have to bite the bullet.

If you want to stay in the city, then Islington is a decent option (Angel Tube station area). It's right on the brink of the congestion zone. There's a decent Jury's Inn about a minute from Angel.

If getting to Victoria station is top priorty then the best place to stay is somewhere in the region of Putney/Clapham (Clapham is about 5-10 minute drive from Putney). You can drive into the city via Fulham or Barnes then onto Hammersmith and be in Sheperds Bush in about 15-20 minutes. You can go via White City area to North London (Islington) or direct into Kensington (about 25 minutes from Putney driving).

You can get an overground train (2-3 minutes to Clapham Junction where you change to get a train to Victoria (4-5 minutes). Every train stops at Clapham Junction.

I say this area as it's easy to access to the South and that answers another of your questions about where you spend your day trips. Brighton is a great place, you can drive, or take the train, again you make your way to Clapham junction for the train.

If driving, all around the south-coast is nice. Brighton - Worthing - Arundel - Bognor Regis - Chichester (Hayling Island) - Portsmouth - Southampton then take the M3 back to London. From Chichester/Bognor Regis/Worthing area Gatwick airport is only 40 minutes away.

You could base yourself around Gatwick airport either - Crawley - Horley - Three Bridges. Victoria is only 25 minutes by train from Gatwick.

Need any further info just ask.

What crossing are you doing? if you are going from Rosslare, then windsor would be good. There are two stations in Windsor, From the roverside it is about 55 mins to Waterloo, from the central station it is 5 minutes to Slough and then about 25 minutes to Paddington.

The Travel Lodge Windsor is right next to the Central Station (and only a five minute walk from Riverside).

The great thing though, is that Windsor is just off the M4, so it is fairly straight forward getting there from Fishguard or Pembroke

Thanks both, I'll take a look at Windsor and Gatwick. I had considered the likes of Heathrow, etc as there would be hotels aplenty and a direct link, but not Gatwick.

The trouble with heathrow is that if you fancy ventruing out of the hotel, there is nothing there other than more hotels and an airport (Slight exageration, but you get the idea).

Reading would be a good shout, that is 20 minutes from Paddington by train, but not the most exciting place in the world and you really need to stay in the right area, the wrong parts of Reading are pretty rough.

Gatwick would strike me as the obvious choice - train directly to Victoria station, and Brixton is only a few stops on the Underground from there.

have you booked your flights already, might be cheaper flying into Heathrow with bmi or Aer Lingus.

If not you could take a coach from Stanstead to Baker street and then jump on the Jubilee line to Wilsden Green.

Right looking for a little help nailing the specifics of a trip down but here is the story; flying into Stansted on Tuesday morning, should be in London Liverpool St by 10am and then the short tube hop to London Bridge where we're staying at the Hilton Tower Bridge for too nights back on Thursday flying mid afternoon from Gatwick so should have the morning free up to 12pm. It gives us pretty much all day Tuesday and Wednesday and then Thursday morning.

What I'm asking here is what/how much should I try to fit in? It's the Gf's first time there and I've a few idea's already; Grease at the West End, Tower of London and basically the bus tour for the rest. She wants to go shopping too so I'm guessing Oxford St will have to hit at some stage. Any other idea's?

And lastly; we're students so cash will be tight'ish - any good cheapie eats in the city?

    Cheers! :)

You seem to have things well covered but will throw out a few suggestions of things you could do if you have the time.

I think your hotel is at Tower Bridge, so weather depending you could take a boat trip from here down to Westminster, good way to see some of the sights along the river.

London Eye: Has become a huge tourist attraction with spectacular views of the city and is well worth doing imo. Particularly romantic in the evening/night imo, since you are bringing the gf. Tube Station is Westminster
    or Embankment

    http://www.londoneye.com/

Covent Garden: Always worth a visit for the street entertainment imo, plenty of restaurants and the Punch and Judy serve a nice pint, you can drink on the balcony and watch the street entertainment below. Covent Garden also has a number of quaint shops and other well known high street shops in the area. Tube Station is Covent Garden.

    http://www.coventgardenlife.com/info/covent_garden.htm

From Covent Garden I would personally walk through Leicester Square into Piccadilly Circus and into Regent Street(plenty of shops on Regent Street, off Regent Street is Carnaby Street, couple of nice coffee shops which also do a reasonable lunch.

    http://www.carnaby.co.uk/news/index.cfm

From Carnaby Street go back into Regent Street, continue walking to Oxford Circus, turn left into Oxford Street. The main store worth visiting in Oxford Street is Selfridges. Plenty of restaurants in Selfridges also.

If You are not walking, then tube station for Selfridges is Bond Street.

Harrods: Even if it is only for a look around, Harrods is a must imo, and at least have a coffee in one of the restaurants. Tube Station Knightsbridge

Kensington Palace: is in the grounds of Kensington Gardens(really nice park) and is where Princess Diana used to live. Tube Station High Street Kensington, leave by main tube entrance turn right 5-7 min walk you will see Kensington Gardens on your left.

    http://www.hrp.org.uk/kensingtonPalace/

Link below shows some free things to do.

    http://golondon.about.com/od/thingst...ree_London.htm

You already have some good things lined up and I suppose a lot will also depend on the weather, the bus tour will enable you to take in a good bit of stuff considering you are only there for 2.5 days, you don't want to overdo things or you will be shattered in the evening.

And of course don't forget The Emirates tour;)

Any tips for places to go in London on New Years Eve ?
Restaurant/late bar kinda thing is what we're after.

We're flying to Luton in January. I know that you have to get a bus from the airport to Luton Parkway to get the train, but I can't work out that the story is on the ticketing front. Do you need to buy a ticket for the bus, do you buy your ticket to London (including the bus) in the airport, or what happens ?

Also, I presume (hope) there is no real queueing for the bus, is there ? It's just a shuttle that runs around and around and around, right . . .

    Thanks,

Bus to the station is free, fairly frequent and the stop is just to the left as you leave the terminal.

    Hi
Was planning to treat my other half to three nights in London from 30 December as a Christmas/birthday pressie in one.
We have sworn never to fly with Ryanair again after a really bad experience with them.

However, looking at flying at normal hours with Aer Lingus and taking accommodation into account, it's looking at costing me over €900 before we do anything!

Does anyone know of anywhere reputable that offers good city breaks or can give advice, please?
    Thanks

For flights check out www.flybmi.com, bmi fly into Heathrow. If not afraid you are stuck with Ryanair or you could try City Jet into London city airport.

For accomodation see my post below (post no93). Hope this helps.

I'm not a big Ryanair fan - we're flying Ryanair to Luton as, like you, we would have ended up paying a huge amount with the others. I can handle Ryanair out of Dublin where there's no surprises (to date) and I've never seen hugely savage queues. However, on the way back we're going with City Jet - it's costing a fair whack more, but for sheer peace of mind and knowing we can check in online and just turn up at the airport without worrying about humungous queues for bag drop and humungous queues for security I think it's worth it.

We can spend the later part of the afternoon in Greenwich and just pop across to the airport knowing the trip through to departures is only going to be minutes.
