Garda recruitment 2020 language requirement

    Hi folks,

    The Garda language requirement demands that any applicant within the recruitment campaign must have a proven proficiency in a 2nd language either through fluency or a pass in an ordinary level leaving certificate language subject.

    For those that do not have this, the PAS facilitate a an Irish language assessment after stage 3 of the recruitment process which shares some similarities to the leaving cert where you must complete an Irish oral and essay assessment.

    I myself have been preparing for this test for a few months now, as I was useless at Irish in school and never took another language as a subject. Following the announcement that all leaving cert students’ oral examinations have been cancelled and the students will be awarded full marks, I am wondering if there should be an amendment made to the language requirements this year.

    Since applicants who complete their leaving certificate this year are walking into their exam with a guaranteed 40% (100 marks from their oral) which is a pass - would it be fair to demand an Irish assessment to those who took their Irish exams in previous years and did not achieve a pass?

    I am curious to know what you all may think!

    I’m hoping so myself. Think last years was in April if my memory is right. Just gotta hold out & wait till the lines open but with all this co-vid 19 going. I highly doubt that’s a priorty

    I am in the same situation. Waiting on assessment. It would be very unfair if any of those who got an automatic pass this year and applied in the future would automatically be accepted based on that. I think it should be waived.

    but then there is the argument for previous people who failed due to the language problem, they wont even open that can of worms by waiving it,
    this years students still need to sit a written paper, they are still planning this years exams , so the oral marks may move back to previous years to 25%, before it was moved to 40%, as i dont see them just handing out passes.
    afterall their requirements are still the same, they still want people to have 2 languages,
    so in my opinion if anything is going to change for a future campaign it would be a small irish oral to show proficiency, so i would not be banking on just getting in with 1 language
