Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It does indeed. The light to regen came on back in September, but I just took it on the motorway for 20 minutes in high revs and it went off and hasn't come back on since.

I filled it up the other day. Reset the trip computer. 63 litres. About €75 cost. The meter read 720km to empty tank. I've done about 120kms and it's at 550km to empty tank now, so I am on course to get more this tank than the awful 500kms from the last one. But I am back to work and I have had to go to the office a few times so it's getting longer journeys now than it was, so maybe that's it.

Tbh, I'd ideally like it to get 700kms to a tank, but don't think it will do that.

It's so weird as to me it seems to be driving very well. Starts on the button, revs don't jutter, drives well. I can't see any leaks on the ground after it's been sitting up a few hours and it's then moved. Would love to hear of anyone else who owns a similar year Audi with a CVT transmission and what fuel economy they got.

Said I'd throw in one more update to this thread after being back to work a few weeks and the car being used a lot more.

Getting around 650kms the last two tanks (maybe a little higher if I literally drove it until it won't go anymore), so it is performing a bit better mileage wise on the longer journeys.

It actually passed the NCT there on Saturday first go. I've the cert until March 2022 now. So it's obviously not a heap!

Still terrible figures. I just filled the superb, 1088km to 61.47 litres (€75) works out at 5.6/100.for this time of year and short journeys I'm very happy with that.

    What year is your Superb?

Yeah, I don't know what to do - keep it another while or try trade it in.

191 so not really a comparable engine to your car. It must be down to to the CVT box if everything else is ok. I'd keep it if I were you, what I owe in payments on the superb would buy a lorra lorra diesel for your car!!

Yeah fair point. Trading it in and adding say 2-3k to buy another car purely to get one better on diesel is not really worth it if I like the car.

Modern autos are probably actually MORE efficient.

They’ll “intelligently” select the appropriate gear for you.

The only downside to autos are snow or ice and overtaking, you can’t drop a gear and rev.

All autos I've ever had could drop down gears no problem. Back to a 2001 reg car and including my current one. And the 4 or 5 in between. I use it plenty too.

4 different ways to drop down gears in mine.
    Gearshift paddles.
    Change mode into sport.
Use the tiptronic on gear lever.
    Floor accelerator past kickdown.

My Golf DSG gearbox will drop a gear when I accelerate more, say 25-30%, even two gears depending on how much acceleration I'm looking for. The kickdown switch is there but never needed. As you say modern gearboxes will select the gear for you, so if you're going uphill it will downshift so you're not labouring at a low rev, but also downshift a gear or two if you need to pass.

Just for comparison I have an auto e200 kompressor , 16years old, 1.8 petrol supercharged, 65l tank and 85 fill gets me 700km, I measure it religiously as me grandad said when consumption on any car drops it's a sign somethings up.

I dont be flooring it though and very little town / short trips

DSG will even drop from 7th gear to 2nd if you really need it to

    Getting between 850-900kms to tank on a 142 3LITRE A6 Quattro Auto.
Only use Circle K premium diesel*.
OP have a look and doing a reset of your gearbox.
I think its something along the lines of holding the acc to the floor for a certain amount of time with the ignition on but engine not running.Probably wrong but am sure someone will know the sequence.

*not wanting to start the fuel debate again.

    Is yours a CVT box?

Actually no. I forgot the poster had the CVT. My Bad!

I don't want to start a fuel debate either but have you found a difference? Or have you only ever used the good stuff.

Was using Applegreen for the first few fills as its the closest but then decided to give the miles plus a few fills to see. Havent looked back. 230,000kms on the clock. Emmision wise sailed thru NCT with no additives and engine has loads of poke.I wont go on as its thread derailment!

None near me at all would love to try it out of curiosity. I've been using millers diesel treatment for the last five tanks or so and I'm definitely seeing less regens, I'll keep using it.

Went to view a 2010 BMW today. The dealer drove my car as he was going to take it as a trade in for €2500 but he immediately said mine has a gearbox issue. See the last post of the thread link.

Suppose explains the poor fuel consumption...

As I said in the thread above, I'll find it hard to trade in and I wouldn't be massively comfortable selling it without pointing out issues I know of!

What revs is the engine running at when doing 100 km/h?

It actually runs fine so long as I don't put the boot to the floor. So if I press the pedal say half way down it keeps between 2000 to 3000 revs and runs fine and will get up the speed. So technically once at 100km/h it can cruise along fine at 1500 revs.

But, if I put the boot down the revs will shoot up to 3500-4000 and the speed will actually go down.

    Any idea?

If it runs okay and you can limp it on for another 6 months without putting money into I would try that.
Obviously you wont be able to give it the boot etc
Those multitronic boxes are very difficult to diagnose faults with.

Driving grand unless you want to boot it.

Do you reckon the gearbox will go completely in the next few months?

It’s been the same since at least July so it might just keep doing what it’s doing.

Only God knows how long it will last, it could go tomorrow or 6 months or 18 months.
It has lasted since last July so if you tip along in it you might get your value out of it.
It's not worth anything so if I was you I would take it handy and see how long you can get out of it.

    So I bought a BMW 520d. 2007.

One came up for sale close enough to me so I went to view.

Seems driving grand. Much better than my Audi. So much more power. You can really notice the difference.

It was a mechanic who I bought it off. Works in a garage in the next town over. He only had it for a few months but he said the previous owner was a man who used to get work done on it in his garage who had it years and when he told them he was selling it he said he'd buy it off him.

Only passed the NCT in December for a full year. 217,000kms.

2 months tax left on it.

    Bridgestone run flat tyres.

    Heated seats.

    Xenon lights.

    Sunroof.

    All buttons work.

M47 engine so no chain issues.

    Serviced in December.

He had it for sale for €2,250 but haggled with him to €2,000. Met him the following day to pick it up and he had put €30 diesel in it and gave me €20 luck money. He said he would never hand someone a car with the fuel light on. A bulb went in the front headlight when he was driving it yesterday and he changed it for me.

He said he gets 800-900 to a tank on it depending on if he's doing short or long trips.

So far I am delighted. Hopefully it's good.

I may try and sell the Audi now. I will probably find it hard to sell it with the gearbox issue but I will highlight it in the ad. There's a full year NCT on it so surely there's someone who will take it and just drive it on till the NCT is up. I was telling him about my Audi. He said if it's terrible on fuel and the revs are shooting up then it could be a leak or valve but he can't be sure, he said the boxes usually have to come out to check what's wrong or specialist diagnostic equipment. What would you put it up for? €1500 and take €1000?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭chops018

Just to follow on from my comment above and considering I had two threads on the Audi A6 (back when I bought it and then this one) I thought I would update everyone as everyone on the thread and even some PM's has been very helpful (Boards is great for that!).

So I finally sold the A6.

Think I paid €1700-1,800 for it when I bought it in July 2020. During the test drive and my own inspection it drove really well with no rattles or noises. Of course once money handed over and on the way home noises appeared. Over the next few days engine was overheating and gearbox crap. My mechanic checked it and nearly €1,000 was spent on it on a new caliper, brake pads and discs, service in general, gearbox service, wheel bearing, and a few minor things.

The car had improved greatly with the work done bar when you floored it the revs would rev up high and it wouldn't really accelerate on. Mechanic said he wasn't sure on the issue. So, I just drove it on as it was then for months but that issue did get to me and took completely away from the car. Then the last couple of months fuel consumption was very low (500km a tank). Granted, an older automatic is obviously harder than a manual diesel, short trips due to working from home, and diesel prices went up, but still too low km's per tank - expected 700-800km.

Funnily enough, passed the NCT a few weeks ago to March 2022. But still the issue and fuel economy irked me.

As per the above post I got another car. So the time came to sell the A6. I put in the ad all the issues I was aware of including the transmission issue. Advertised for €1,950 for a few days then lowered it to €1,750. Loads of calls and messages but no one committed to come view. One guy said he would give me €1,100 and said he would be exporting it for parts to Eastern Europe. I said I would agree if I could not get a better offer in a few days. He was due to come today but then yesterday someone came to view and I again explained all the issues. They brought a diagnostic tool and took it for a 15-20 minute test drive. Offered €1,200. We settled on €1,250 but I gave him a few quid back for luck.

It was a lovely car to drive just going around town and the steering was the lightest I have ever felt in a car but I am glad to see the back of it tbh.

Thanks for all the helpful posts on here!

P.S. I didn't even think there was a market for these cars for export for parts to Eastern Europe!
