That's a pity, he was a good laugh and didn't take himself too seriously (at least that's the impression I got).

He was good on RTE Gold.

I guess the fact he is going and that Zampadoodle has her own show in a prime slot says everything I need to know about 2FM.

I'm not sure of keith walsh's age (45 / 46 ???) , but he was up there as one of the oldest on the schedule - the current (excluding non syndicated weekend Dance presenters) ages of 2FM presenters on the current schedule, starting from the oldest:

1. Dave Fanning (64)
2. Mr Spring (49)
3. Dan Hegarty (44 ??)

most of the presenters are in their 30s, so your list could include around 8 / 10 other presenters in that age range.

Would Keith Walsh be leaving radio completely and going into some non-radio private sector job? That's what his old mate from a few different radio stations did - Joe Donnelly. He left Today FM, as a producer and stand-in presenter, to be Marketing Manager for Rascals Brewing Company. Keith co-presented shows with Joe on Phoenix Radio (community station), Phantom FM (as a pirate), Spin103 and, some years later, licensed Phantom FM. Keith Walsh joined the latter as Programming Director, before being reunited some months later with Joe Donnelly.

In December 2013, Keith Walsh left Phantom initially (or officially) on holidays before being announced in February 2014 as part of the lineup for the new 2FM breakfast show Banana Republic. The other co-hosts were Jennifer Maguire (as she was then) and Bernard O'Shea. Keith had previously worked with Bernard O'Shea on iRadio, while Bernard was working with Jennifer on tv. Meanwhile, that March, Phantom was relaunched as TXFM in what proved to be it's last throw of the dice. Good timing by Keith! Joe Donnelly stayed with TXFM until it's very end in October 2016.

No ageism....no need for an explanation, but here goes:
It is just an anorak list of the oldest presenters on the national youth station, as Keith Walsh was within that category.

When Scott Mills (46) leaves BBC radio 1 there will probably be a similar topic discussed.

Not seen them as RTÉs youth station for a while. Nor have I seen or heard any marketing that claims they are targeting youth only. I just see it as Radio 1 talks and 2fm plays music and Lyric does classical.
Their current slogan is "Sound of the nation" not sound of the youth/gen z / broke teenagers, the nation. Not saying it's a successful slogan, mind. But it's indicative of who their target are, anyone of the nation who care to listen.

About 4 or 5 years ago they got rid of most of their older djs (Colm Hayes, Ruth Scott, Will Leahy, Rick O'Shea, Hector and I'm sure a few others) and banned all music from pre 2000 in order to "win back" the youth. They may well have changed strategy since, as RTE are notorious for starting something and then losing interest.

For that to be the case 2fm would need talented presenters who can speak English properly, talented producers with innovative ideas and a strong music policy.

None of that is in place.

Only as a wild fantasy in the head of 2fm's PR company.

I'm kinda surprised that he even got a last show, poor Ruth Scott, despite being one of their longest serving djs of all time got no good bye at all. Ditto with Damian Farrelly

Tbh I dont get why 2fm threw the baby out with the bathwater in the summer 2019 reshuffle by axing breakfast republic, it had grown steadily over the 5 years. I think breakfast republic should have been a long-term brand for 2fm like the strawberry alarm clock on 104.

I liked Keith on rte gold.. they must think he dosent fit the demographic they are after on 2FM. Only reason Dave Fannin is still on is cos he is a lifer there and they cant move him.

Dave is not RTE staff but he is a lifer in terms of being part of the original 2FM line up and what he has done for Irish music since late 70s / his U2 connection.

A bit of a sweeping statement there. Quite a few were there longer than Ruth Scott. Incidentally, it says on Linkedin 18 years and 1 month, but she left it for a while to co-host a show on 98FM!

Also Michael McNamara (Micky Mac) 1979 to 1999 !!

Ian was 1980 to 1998, so not over 18 years!!

There were a few presenters who were there for exactly 18 years such as Tony Fenton 1985 to 2003, Barry Lang 1980 to 1998 !!

The months are important here as Ruth Scott says 18 years and 1 month, if we ignore the fact that she was with 98FM for some of that! So, Ian Dempsey was 18 years and 4 months. What about Toners and Barry Lang?

Tony started on Radio 2 the night Springsteen played Slane: June 1985 and left the station in March 2003, so a few months shy of 18 years!!

Barry started in 1980 (not sure what month) probably around the same time as Ian did in March 1980??.
Barry finished on 2FM in February 1998 and his final songs were Ace "How long" and then The Walker Brothers "No Regrets"

The reason it was called Breakfast Republic in the first place was to tie in with Jennifer and Bernards TV show Republic of Telly. Keith Walsh got involved because 1. He was an actual DJ who knew how to work a mixing desk and 2. He'd done a breakfast radio show with Bernard before on i105-107 (iRadio NE)
Looks like Bernard wanted to leave radio anyway and while Jen was still on maternity there wasn't any connection to Republic of Telly anymore.
Hence the drop and replacement with Doireann and Eoin.

It maybe the case but it survived for 3 years after the end of the series, breakfast republic was not a bad brand, what's the name of the show how?

Or Fully Charged on SPIN 1038, which has had three different sets of presenters since its launch in autumn 2008.

Am I correct in saying that News on 2FM only airs between 7am and 7pm Monday to Friday, but that sports bulletins air on the station until 10pm each night and on Saturday and Sunday I assume until around 10pm?

As a fairly regular 2fm listener this sounds mostly correct, only difference I can think of is that I do hear a news update at 6:30 am on my commute to work.

there was a new guy on with a VERY country accent on today, in keith walsh's old 5 to 7 pm slot.
like a guy you'd hear on a regional youth station.
