Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Need a book for traveling

    Doing a bit of traveling over the summer and want to get a couple of good books to help with the long journeys. I want a real page turner. I'll give examples of books that I have really enjoyed to help yea with recommendations!

    Filth, Trainspotting, Dune, The Road, Shantaram, I am Legend, The Beach, Fight Club, Lord of the Rings, Song of Ice and Fire, A Short History of Nearly Everything, A Confederacy of Dunces, World War Z

    Get the Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It won't make you any more intelligent, but it's a real page turner and it's huge.

    oh - and "Porno" is the sequel to trainspotting, and just as good IMO.

    Ive read Porno - in fact I think Ive read everything Irvine Welsh has written.

    I'll look into Pillars of the Earth. Seems to have lots of positive reviews...but I dunno, the description doesnt grab me. Seems like a bit of a period drama...which Im not a fan of.

    Underworld by Don Delillo
    Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pychon
    Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy

    Thats about 2000 pages of solid reading right there. Not if you are travelling for more than 70 hours I could recommend you a couple of more.

    Bryce Courtnay - The Power of One
    Perfect for a holiday, not taxing, just a rip-roaring read, so well written and a page turner. Really inspiring and one of my favourite books. Warning - I read this on holiday in Italy and ended up enjoying it far more than the holiday itself as I couldn't tear myself away from it.

    The Wolf of the Plains by Conn Iggulden, its a historical fiction based around Genghis Khan.
    And any David Gemmell novel is worth a read in my opinion

    it's an accurate description, to be fair. Good story tho.

    If you're going to be travelling I can't think of anything better than On the Road by Jack Kerouac. And, when you're finished reading that, you might as well read The Dharma Bums by him also.

    Have to agree with the 'On the road' suggestions - when travelling, it's perfect for dipping into.

    Also try 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' by Tom Wolfe, and 'Hell's Angels by Hunter S. - 1960s California, long-hair, happy drugs, and the open road - good medecine for travelling.

    I've similar enough taste to yours, and would recommend Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty as a great book for travelling with. Long, engrossing, and well-written (and manly to boot).

    (Guns Germs and Steel, too, if you are into non-fiction, but it might be a bit heavy.)

    Shogun is a great read,an epic,its the Male version of Gone with the wind.
    Plenty of action ,great characters,great storytelling and a history lesson thrown in for free.It's one of those books that when its finished you are sorry its over and want to know more about the characters.

    Cheers for the recommendations. I think I'm gonna go with Shogun and On The Road (Ive always wanted to read it). I'll check out some of the other ones suggested in this thread when I get back.
