    1100 update from met eireann

Heavy rain will clear the east coast early this afternoon, but showers and drizzle in the west will then spread eastwards during the afternoon and will only clear away to the east this evening. A mild day with highs of 8 to 12 degrees in fresh to strong southerly winds which will veer southwest to west later. However it will become much cooler early this evening.
    Tonight

It will become extremely windy tonight as strong to gale force southwesterly winds develop. There will be some severe, possibly damaging gusts in particular along western and northwestern coasts. It will also become cold with widespread showers of rain, sleet, hail and snow especially in parts of the north and west with the risk of thunder. Temperatures will fall to between 0 and 3 degrees so some frost is possible in sheltered areas.
    hr.gif

    Tomorrow

It will remain extremely windy tomorrow with strong to gale force southwesterly winds, and it will be stormy at times in parts of the west and north, with further severe gusts likely. A colder day with highs of only 4 to 8 degrees and there will be more squally showers of rain, sleet, hail and snow as well as some thunder. The strong winds will start to ease off during the afternoon.

Also ice warning in place STATUS YELLOW

Snow-ice Warning for Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo
Wintry showers will develop early tonight, with a mixture of hail, sleet and snow with accumulations of up to 3 cm likely, larger values are possible on higher ground. With strong winds forecast, driving conditions could become poor. The showers will continue into Monday morning.

All the regulars must be still in bed, after a few weeks of quite weather we have a storm coming and very little from the posters. :D

Very stormy in Castlebar at the moment.

Yeah I was wondering why so little activity. After yesterday's RTE weather forecast mentioning strong winds I had a look at the weather forum here to see if there was a warning up but nothing so I assumed we'd be ok. Not so - Orange warnings all of a sudden this morning.

Either that or they've all left the country for "Stormier Climes" to get a bit of action after the calm few weeks we've had.

Still in bed !!!:) A duvet day !!!

However there is one hell of a gale blowing in Tralee Bay, with high tide this pm there will be local flooding.

Certainly looks like being a lot stormier here in Kerry this time around compared to the last storm, especially the second half of Monday. Very deep low likely to be around 955mb and possibly lower centered off Scotland tomorrow evening. Possible red warning for the W and SW ?

Fortunately not too much rain fell yet today ( 9.6mm here ), high tide in Fenit at 19.25 (4.7m ), tomorrow morning 07.54 ( 4.7m) and monday evening at 20.13 ( 4.5m).

just starting to come into frame now, lots of shower activity overnight by the look of it. I've never seen it so quiet in here when there is an orange warning issued, maybe all the false dawns this winter has finally taken its toll.

We have basically the same alert in our Boards forecast and I think it will verify as a solid level 2 but I don't currently see level 3 potential with this one, peak gusts may be just a bit over 130 km/hr. The coastal flooding aspect may be the more significant impact. It is now about 72h since new moon but it was perigeean and so tidal ranges will be running fairly close to the average monthly maximum tides so would add perhaps 1.0 to 1.5 metres onto those for actual high tides on both occasions Monday. If someone could post the times that would be good. The low tide will be no more than an average of high and low tide under this constant strong westerly tidal pressure. East coast tide maxima will only be about 0.5 metres above normal in this pattern, south coast perhaps 0.7-0.9 metres.

Perhaps they have moved away to sunnier places for the duration of the winter??? I know I am getting out of here again until Spring arrives!!

The strongest winds are about to hit the northwest. Gusts to 56 knots at the M4 buoy in Donegal Bay. Would expect peak gusts around 10:00 to 13:00 in Connacht and west Ulster, and a tendency for the maximum gusts to spread south so that the peak in west Munster may come this afternoon into early evening. That will not mean a large decrease further north but perhaps a slight decrease as this tendency plays out. In eastern counties would expect the maximum gusts around 2 p.m.

Wind speeds have already been discussed, but as a general estimate, 130 km/hr peak gusts in exposed northwest, 120 km/hr exposed southwest, 110 km/hr southeast coast and some parts of east with good exposure to west. Some inland areas that are not overly exposed might see peak gusts of 80-90 km/hr.

Ive posted this in the lightning thread but i feel is relivent to this thread too.

Never seen a level 2 over parts of west ireland before
    level 1 for rest

    showforecast.cgi?lightningmap=yes&fcstfile=2015022406_201502230305_2_stormforecast.xml

A level 1 was issued for the British Isles for chances of severe convective wind gusts and tornadoes.

A level 2 was issued for western Ireland and western Scotland mainly for severe convective wind gusts.
A deep low pressure system (<948 hPa in GFS model) moves to the north of Scotland. Its tight pressure gradients over the British Isles combined with the convective activity developing in the cool airmass pose a risk of severe wind gusts.

    ...Ireland and Scotland...

The threat is particularly concentrated along the west coast as most of the energy for thunderstorms in the unstable airmass is supplied by the lapse rate between ocean and cold mid levels. WInds over 30 m/s at low to mid levels can be transported to ground as severe wind gusts in convective downdrafts. Over land, the friction causes strong low-level wind shear >17 m/s which can support tornadoes, if strong updrafts could be maintained. Convection will initally (09-12Z) be organized linearly along the occlusion curled up around the low and will likely pose a more concentrated threat. A second round with more clustered storms should occur in the evening at the passage of a shortwave trough.

This feels more in the level 3, especially the gusts, some are extremely strong. Lights flickering every fee mins too so could be in for an interesting night.
Just outside Newport, fairly elevated but not too exposed.

Galway City just west of Salthill.

Gusts are the strongest in a while I can remember. A different level to any of the winter storms.
