Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just managed to grab one of these, they had gone out of stock temporarily this morning but when i seen this post i checked again to find they were back in stock

Not stocked by either Eason outlet in Limerick. :-(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,569 ✭✭✭Special Circumstances

What extras would I need on this to get it running Kodi?
I don't think it would be worth the hassle tbh. More a "disposable" board for embedded projects. Although I always think of RPIs in terms of "maker" type stuff first and media second.

What a blast of nostalgia, desperately trying to find the issue of that magazine with the extra cool cover disk or free gift. 20 years at least. Amiga 500.

Yeah, reminds me of the christmas edition of Amiga Format with a special christmassy version of cannon fodder.

Id love to pick a copy of this but i guess even if it makes it over here it will be dang rare.

no ethernet. no wifi. no bluetooth. need more cables due to smaller than usual ports. I'm out.
it will be good for portable gameboy consoles and the like....

ESP8266 wifi is sub $2, why wouldn't they include it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,320 ✭✭✭davo2001

ESP8266 wifi is sub $2, why wouldn't they include it?

Because that increases the cost of a $5 device by 40% and would defeat the purpose of it.

I did have the same thought. It's so small that adding plugging a load of stuff into seems wrong - set it up once then remote login after that via wifi.

Also - is it even capable of powering a wifi dongle without a powered hub?

I'm sure people will come up with cool uses for it but there is a bit of messing to connect to it.

PS - cannon fodder, man - we were reminiscing about that and syndicate in the office here recently. Still got your old Amiga disks? http://www.armigaproject.com/

I just rang Tesco customer care before seeing your post and the fecker's told me that none of their ROI stores stock this. Will check a few of my local Tesco's. Thanks!:)

It didn't scan when I went up, the guy said it wasn't in the system so he couldn't sell it to me. I said can I wait til you put it in and he said come back in an hour. Went back and the girl that was there knew nothing about it, so just scanned the Good Housekeeping magazine she was reading at customer care and charged me €6.04.

Had kodi running on my Raspberry Pi A model for ages. What hassle do you mean?

You need a mini SD card and your media you want to play. If you want network access of to use the kodi mobile remote you need an ethernet or Wifi dongle.
The essentials pack which is about $6 should have everything you need.

Tried two tescos in the city centre and nothing there. Seems like it was lucky you got one in there.

Yeah but there's other boards will do the job without all sortsa gubbins hanging off em.

I mean fair enough if you really really like adapters. Personally I'd put the price of the adapters toward extra performance but hey...

Its faster with more RAM than previous versions which run Kodi fine.

Still got my old a1200 and a500 even ! Either all my disks are deqd though or the drives in the machine. I was still able to trick out the a1200 with a 4gb sd card and a load of games. Its gas watching a a1200 boot in 20 seconds.

While they make a profit that isn't their motive and why it's better to support them instead of other just for profit clones/wannabes etc

none left in dun laoghaire main store
Checked all shelves. Also both express and normal in bray. I was told tesco extra stores might be best like large Dundrum and tallaght though on day 2 it would be doubtful. The official twitter account apparently suggested tesco extra for roi which seems to match up to dun laoghaire

Probably a lot of hype vs demand, hence crowds like cpc Farnell only selling as part of a kit for 15 euro plus shipping. Hopefully they will continue to supply at low price to encourage kids to learn with them.

I got a facebook message from my sister this morning asking did I know anywhere selling the MagPi magazine. Said sister has never shown the slightest interest in the Pi before, so if she was already looking for MagPi this morning, I'd say you're right and it will be a miracle finding it tomorrow.

Came back in stock this morning and managed to get to checkout but honestly don't know if it's worth the £8.99 to DPD / PM, or £9.99 direct to Ireland direct.

I had a Raspberry Pi for a while with Kodi installed etc.. but I mean this one doesn't even have a Ethernet port!

This board in my opinion is almost too cheap.
Let me explain, some outlets will stock them but with so little room for profit they are going to bundle them with accessories to get you to part with your money. With cables etc it should come to €18ish in ireland. What would be best would be if maplins or other bricks and mortar store got stock and sold it for €6.

That might happen but in a few months when the frenzy dies down.

If you're waiting for Maplins to ever start selling stuff at that kind of price good luck

Maplin are still selling the original Raspberry Pi B in a kit for €75. They'll never offer it for a reasonable price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,815 ✭✭✭imitation

Its really more of a pi for project builders or embedded projects. Its well in the price range for a disposable project like a weather baloon too. I can see people buying 2 or 3 at a time. The Pi 2 is still substantially better for using as a computer (although imo it still falls a bit short of what you really need)

    True.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to organise a group buy of say 100 from the foundation so we can get them at or around the intended price.

You can get a pi zero from Farnell with the cables for 14 euro. If you dont want to be gouged by Maplin, dont use them. The very few times I use them its when its an emergency and I know Im paying twice sometimes three times what I could be paying online. I loathe to do it, but sometimes you need that part.

If I ran a Maplins-esque shop, I wouldnt locate it in premium spots like off Henry/Mary Street of in the G shopping centre in Galway, I'd have it in the Ballycoolin industrial estate or somewhere and I'd survive on repeat custom from people who know they are not being gouged at every opportunity.

given its cheaper then fuel to order of the internet, no bricks and mortar operation can survive in low margins
