To combat the damage caused by seasonal flooding, Tokyo has built the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel (MAOUDC), a 6.3km series of tunnels and vast, cavernous underground chambers which will capture and contain floodwater. There are also 13000hp pumps that can expel water at the rate of 200 tons per second, which is equivalent to the capacity of a 25metre pool in 2-3 seconds.
