Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm so used to the choppy scrolling I don't even notice it. First time I saw a smooth scrolling it was on the Master System i thing . Didn't think it was possible :)
Nemesis 2 is great. The music is fantastic I think. It was unique to the MSX too. It got a port on the X86000 later but that was it.

Nemesis 2 and 3 are unique to the system though The first Gradius/Nemesis is so different that is might as well be counted as a unique game as well.

posting this here instead of the music cover thread because it's MSX and everything msx should me in this sexy premium thread :)

My last cover (Dune on the amiga) won the VGCover contest on reddit. The winner gets bragging rights and gets to choose the theme for the next month. This time I choose MSX games. This is my entry. From The Treasure of USAS on MSX2

There's some cool tunes done there. That Metal Gear 2 cover is epic : https://www.reddit.com/r/VGCovers/comments/3qn774/pixel_mixers_cover_contest_2_msx_games_voting_time/

... and a new MSX Mansion to follow :)
This was my first "Castlevania" experience and my first time booting up an MSX2 title. What a shock this was.

never know where these should fo in the new stuff or msx thread... but here it is. A couple of recent gets.
The activision games were probably the best versions on the MSX. Beam Rider, Keystone kaper, River raid, Hero, Pastfinder. Loved these games.
Rastan saga on msx2 is more or less a more playable version of the Master System port.

Hey Ollie, you're the MSX dude here. Is there an official colour for the MSX logo? It's doesn't look right in the colour I printed and a google search brings up loads of different versions.

it's typically white over a black background or just black. I've seen other colours too though. I don't think there's a trademarked colour.

Cheers, maybe a nice shiny black might look well.
I'm printing off some nice 3D logos for most retro systems and trying to get the colours at least close to the official ones.

Another MSX Mansion I did a couple of weeks back. Comic Bakery is another forgoten Konami title.
There was an arcade machine too but I just cannot find any pictures or footage of it .

here's a format even MSX fans prob don't know about . The Hudson Soft Bee Card
Similar the the PC Engine or Master System hue cards... although not nearly as good :)
Insert the receiving cart into your MSX and slide the bee card into the cart . Cumbersome, not great. but pretty cool though :)
It laid the basis for what would become the Hu(e)Card for the PC Engine (also designed by hudson)
also it's quite rare and pricey nowadays even by MSX standards.
I need to make an MSX mansion video about it soon

Finally got around to trying out the MSX 'MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD' I got last year on my MSX2.

Fecking awesome bit of kit :) Loads up all ROMs and disk images I tried without any problems, has a bunch of other features I've done even looked at yet..

still can't bring myself down to getting one of these ... I always think, I'd rather wait and get the original game.
    They're a good solution though

I know what you mean but this also give you access to loads more software than just games and helps filter out the crap just in case I ever decide to buy some carts :)

I'm definitely getting one. A lot of great msx software came on disk but they are so fragile I'd hate to spend a fortune on, say the Aleste games, only for them to be dodgy or go dodgy down the line.

Finally found a (legitimate) copy of Adventure Island for the MSX. First release was in Japan for Famicom and MSX simultaneously & only made it to NES format 2 years later.
It's faaaar from being the best version, but the fact that it existed on the MSX at all was amazing for me at the time ... also its on a Bee Card

I presume that's Wonder Boy by another name? Was one of my favourite games on C64, addicted to it I was. :)

That is a blatent rip off alright, no copyrights back then, those were the days

It might be the exact same game with a different skin on it but it's not a Rip-off.

Wonderboy/Adventure Island has a very weird history. Basically the games were developed by Westone. Westone would develop a game then license it out to other companies who would make their own modifications to the games.

It's why you have Wonderboy/Adventure Island as the exact came game, Westone licensed it to Hudson and Sega who put their own spin on it. It also explains the multiple version of other games, such as Wonderboys The Dragon's Trap masquerading under a weird anime license on the TG-16.

Both Wonderboy and Adventure Island spun off into their own respective series, both kind of going in the Metroidvania route before Super Metroid was even a thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,599 ✭✭✭BGOllie

Hudson got the licence from westone (or Escape as it was called then) to do ports of the arcade on various format but Sega owned the name wonderboy so they had to call it a different name and change the main character .

It's why the new Wonderboy3 remake is called "Dragon's Trap" and the "sequel" will be called Monsterboy, SEGA still owns the name Wonderboy and is asking for too much money to release it.

As a fan of WonderBoy in Monsterland in the arcade, I was transfixed with WonderBoy III: The Dragon's Trap on my GameGear. Absolutely loved it, and it's the one I wish I still had my GameGear for more than any of the others!

    my favourite game for sure.
Immensely looking forward to this :

The c64 version is my favourite port of the game. Was challenging as hell and levels were shorter. When I playedthe Master System port I laughed at how easy and long the levels are with not much going on at all at the beginning.

got this today in the post.
Gall Force was an anime back in the mid/late 80s.
the game was released on MSX and Famicom Disk . it looks surprisingly good on the MSX 1 actually, but I love the box art and it comes with a cool poster / manual

How many games have you got for the msx now Ollie? You're building up a nice collection.

Falcom wasn't cheating the fans when they did the MSX versions of the YS series. Cards, display stand, mouse mat, 80 pages full color manual, musical score, toooons of ads and brochures and a stunning padded box

yeah, I haven't counted in a while. I'd say around 140/150 mostly boxed games, not counting doubles :)

Falcom are just wonderful. For such a big important part of Japanese gaming it's a shame they've remained so niche until now. Thank god for their partnership with XSeed who are bringing their games to the West.

    ...don't need more videogames....have enough already...want MSX...

Damn you Ollie, you're like a drug dealer standing outside a methadone clinic with a bag full of heroin :pac:

That really is lovely - how do MSX floppies hold up to the test of time? Do you play any of them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭CosmicSmash

The packaging on that is really nice, the closest I'm going to get is the msx compilation on the Saturn. I have neither the space nor the funds to start unfortunately, it would be interesting to see how the Saturn holds up against the msx gameplay wise.
