So earlier this week I attended my dentist and he told me I needed a root canal treatment on a back molar.
He said he would refer me to an endodontist who specializes in this type of work.

He quoted me a price of 800 euro and a crown would be in or around 400.

Now the thing is I looked around on google and saw some dental practices do root canals for almost half the price I was quoted (Im in dublin )

How can my dentist or rather his endodontist charge 800 when some others can charge half that?

Am I being ripped off? Are all treatments the same ? Why the huge difference in price?

I have a few days to think it over or I could just get the tooth taken out, which I'd prefer not to.

However, financial restrictions are a factor in all of this.

    Hope someone can advise?
    Thanks

I spent €680 with Smiles a few weeks ago for the same treatment on a molar also.

Molar endo can be quite challenging..

Endo is specialist. Paying for their time, skill and expertise.

All treatments are not the same. If you have been refered to an endodontist it is probably too complicated for a regular dentist and requires more time, specialised equipment, training, etc. all meaning greater cost.

I had a complicated one done a few years back for just over €1k as I really want to keep my own teeth.

root canal work is foundation work. Its important its right. Back teeth and some front teeth are more complex, and a root canal specialist (that does nothing but root canal all day, and did extra training in root canal treatments for many years) will get better results in these difficult cases. You will pay more for this, however a poor quality root canal is really the worst money you can spend. Try not tender teeth to the lowest bidder.

Also pay more than 400 euro for a crown....that would be rock bottom pricing. Dentist generally know the value of their work.
