European Parliament projections

    This is a projection by the Parliament itself based on latest poll data - poll of polls. It's not country-specific, but a snapshot of voting intentions at the Parliament level:

    The current Parliament is rather more dominated by the EPP (PPE in this image) - that's the centre-right group to which Fine Gael belongs:

    So, while much of the coverage to date has focused on the possible/probable rise of eurosceptic MEPs, there's a possibly more important shift away from the centre-right consensus that has dominated politics both at the Parliament and Member State level for most of the last 10-20 years in favour of a more balanced left-right situation.

    For those who don't know them, Ireland's parties sit with the following EP groups:

    EPP - Fine Gael
    ALDE - Fianna Fáil, Marian Harkin
    S&D - Labour
    GEU/NGL - Sinn Fein, Socialist Party
