Mods I wasn’t sure if this should be in consumer Issues but if you think it would be better in another forum please feel free to move it.

Long story short. I have a chronic Illness which I am under a number of consultants in the hospital. My condition is not well know outside the specialists I see. On Saturday I went to my GP Surgery as I felt I needed to attend A & E, as this was a walk-in clinic there was a locum GP.

I tried explaining my condition but he dismissed everything I said, told me antibiotics would sort the issue in a few days (which I knew it wouldn’t), refused to give me a letter for A & E but did give me a sick note for work. It cost me €60 for the visit and I had to pay before I left the surgery. There was a lot of other stuff that happened with the doctor and I did end up in tears over the visit.

On Sunday I ended up in A & E (like I knew I would) and got more surgery done and because I didn’t have letter from my GP it is going to cost me €100. Would it be worth my while complaining to my GP Surgery and trying to get the cost of the A & E visit back.

Were you admitted as an inpatient to have the surgery done in the hospital?
If so you should not have to pay the €100 fee but instead the nightly charge of the hospital. Also note that there is a maximum charge of 10 nights in a year.
You can try to argue your case with the GP but it might not apply retrospectively with the hospital if you did not have the GP letter at the time.

The surgical team wanted to book me in but it was eventually decided to do the procedure under local anaesthetic and morphine in A & E. I was much happier with this decision.

So you would have been charged €80 if you had been admitted for the night.

I would suggest phoning the accounts dept of the hospital first to see if they will waive the fee if you receive the letter. Then request your GP to issue the letter.
