Connecting android phone to TV?

I'm trying to connect my android phone to my TV using an MHL cable but when I press source on TV remote and go to HDMI1/DVI nothing appears on screen. Same when I go to HDMI2. The cable is connected to the USB and HDMI slots on the tv and to the phone as well. Any help greatly appreciated.
