Nope. The only reason a boxer would even consider that is if they had no chance of a medal anyway or already had a professional contract signed and never really loved the amateur game anyway.

The lucrative deals offered to Olympic medallist far outways what anyone would make from betting against themselves. I'd be much more concerned with Azerbaijan officials/boxers/government officials betting on them gaining 2 Gold medals....

Good opening fight, that last round was the best with the Ukranian having to go for it, Diaz Jnr looks a good fighter from that showing.

The opening bout, first of 272, was pretty good. The U.S. boxer, Diaz, beat a Ukranian fighter at 56 kgs. Diaz is very strong and will beat you if you want to stand and trade.

It will be a tough ask for Diaz next against the world champion.

    Former I think you mean.

Unless he is meeting Cuba's Alvarez next? Alvarez having got a bye?

Great win from Nevin. Totally outclassed his opponent.

On another note, Jimmy Magee is woeful.

An absolute joy to watch, sensational as ever from Nevin, he really just oozes class. It's gonna get a lot tougher from now on though.

Magee needs to be quietly retired.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

I watched it on BBC, Richie Woodhall was on commentary.

Actually can't sit through Jimmy Magee talking ****e.

You can retire Mick Dowling too. His comment about JJ Nevin being "a good thinker - that's thinker with a TH" was in very poor taste and Tracey Piggott should really have apologised as I think it was meant as a joke rather than simply trying to dig himself out of a hole.

He has such a snide attitude that overshadows his half-decent analysis at times.

Same here watched it on the BBC, I'm sure Jimmys a nice man and all, but his boxing commentary is very poor and no matter how bad an Irish boxer is Jimmy praises them to all heights.

Darren O Neil now on at 15:15.

The man was 77 last birthday ....time to pass on the job to a younger person

I love watching Valdez fight, probably my favourite non Irish amateur.

Nevin Boxed beautifully. Great performance to get set for the rest of the tournament.
