Scabs is a superbly written and spectacularly performed play which will premiere in 10 Days in Dublin this week.

Scabs runs nightly at 8.30 pm from 4th-6th July, in the Pearse Centre (birthplace of Padraic Pearse!), Pearse Street (beside the Trinity Capitol Hotel).

It is the autumn of 1913, and Dublin is caught up in a full blown class war. A war that Nora Kelly, feminist, suffragette, and member of the Irish Women Workers’ Union, is prepared to fight to the bitter end. Her husband Audeon is a staunch socialist and there is no lower life form to both than a “scab” – a person who works during a strike. But as their food runs out and their young daughter sickens and starves, both have to face the hard truth that the politics they’ve dedicated their lives to are threatening the life of their daughter. Tensions creep into their marriage. Violence breaks out on the streets. Difficult decisions have to be made. If they give up, are they condemning their child to a future no brighter than the present they fought so hard to change? But will a better, fairer world matter if little Mary doesn’t live to see it?

Written and Directed by Naomi Elster
Performed by Áine de Siún, Robert Harrington, Seamus Whelan, Conor Scott and Sarah Minto

Tickets are just €10/8 concession and available from http://entertainment.ie/tickets/listings.asp?q=scabs&search=Search.

    Cork Repertory Company Presents

    MOLL
    by John B. Keane

    Directed by James Horgan
    Lighting design by Jamie Feehily

Starring Fionula Lenihan, Eoin Hally, Charlie Ruxton, Stephen Wyley and Laura Harte.

A delightful comedy by Ireland’s premier storyteller ‘Moll’ is a hilarious look at life in a rural Irish parochial house.

The play is set behind the doors of a presbytery in the 1970’s and follows the exploits of the resourceful priest’s housekeeper. Moll is a dedicated but single-minded woman. Indeed, at times, she wields more power than the Canon and has a definite agenda of her own that includes the introduction of bingo, a strict regime for the curates in her care and, perhaps, a little something for herself into the bargain!
If the story of three priests and a housekeeper sounds familiar then you are probably a fan of the equally funny ‘Father Ted’. John B.’s play is the undoubted inspiration for the successful TV series as all the characters are there – three frazzled priests, a housekeeper, the quirky locals and even the Bishop makes an appearance. This housekeeper though is much more quick-witted than Mrs. Doyle.

James Horgan, director of the play, had this to say, “Even though it was first performed in the early 1970’s, ‘Moll’ is just as funny and popular today because it appeals to our sense of fun and how easily we can relate to the characters it portrays. John B. Keane’s characters were drawn from the real people he knew. Their realness and his own wicked sense of humour combine to create a comedy that will always be loved.”

The production stars well-known Cork actress, Fionula Linehan, in the title role and Cobh native, Eoin Hally, as the hapless Canon. Pitting their wits against the always-prepared Moll are the two unfortunate curates, Fr. Brest and Fr. Loran, played by Charlie Ruxton and Stephen Wyley respectively. Representing the ‘quirky locals’ is another Cork theatre stalwart Laura Harte, who takes on the role of dipsomaniac, Bridgie, and director James Horgan briefly steps out from backstage to play the all-knowing Bishop.

    Tickets: 10th - 13th July all tickets only €10,
    16th - 27th July €15, €12 concessions, €10 groups of 10 or more.
To book call the Cork Arts Theatre on 021-4505624.

I have 3-grandparents who emigrated from Irelandin the early 1900's. I have written a 3-actplay about one of them. It concerns a bizarreand wonderful event that occurred in 1957, involving my grandfather McCoy, thatforever changed the lives of our family. It is being staged, under the auspices of the Irish Heritage Club ofSeattle, in March of 2014.

I would like to share this story with those whom I think maybe interested. It is presently beingpublished by Lazy Bee Scripts of Great Britain. The Irish-American Theater of Cincinnati has it slated for futureproduction. You can learn more about myplay, A Rose for Danny, at the following web-site:

What would happen if the PEANUTS gang grew up?
Our beloved comic strip characters are re-imagined a decade later as hormonal teenagers with serious issues. CB's beloved dog has died, causing him to question the existence of an afterlife.
His best friend is too burnt out to provide any coherent speculation; his sister has turned goth; his ex-girlfriend has been institutionalized; and his other friends are too inebriated to provide him any sort of comfort.
But a chance meeting with the artistic kid -- the target of bullying -- offers CB peace of mind and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits.
Drug use, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion and sexual identity collide and careen toward an ending that's both haunting and hopeful, while posing the question - do we really want to grow up?

Starring: Jordan Smith, Jamie O’Herlihy, Angela O’Callaghan, Ciara Buckley, Timmy Coffey, Michael McLaughlin, Lauren Lahive and Gemma Collins

    Present
    Marvel

Elizabeth Moynihan's latest play, "Marvel", is set in a hotel room in Dublin on the night of September 28th, 2008. The play examines the relationship between Marvel (a young girl trafficked from Liberia, working as an escort) and Dion (a married trader in financial futures and hedge funds), tracing its development in scenes alternating between this climactic night and the events of the preceding year. Exploring the dynamics of sexual and economic power, the play burns with their particular passions, but also serves as a devastating commentary on the cycle of boom and bust – and the effect it has on its human victims.

"You wouldn't be so perfect if you had wasted any of your time in sincerity."

Noel Coward’s sparkling mix of wit and cocktails, The Vortex sets out to beguile and provoke in equal measure.

Enter the bright and charming world of flamboyant socialite Florence Lancaster and her talented young son Nicky. Florence is a fading beauty enjoying an affair with a much younger man, Tom. Nicky, a successful composer, returns from Paris with his new fiancée, Bunty. When Tom and Bunty fall in love, Florence and Nicky face a crisis. Their brilliant repartee and easy wit is slowly revealed to be a superficial surface under which lie real, human struggles. In confronting his vain, self-absorbed mother can Nicky break free from his own demons?

The Vortex was first performed in 1924 where its subject matter of sex and drugs scandalised London. Now, 90 years on, it is just as delightful, thrilling and, in the words of the author, ‘un peu shocking’.

Forced to reflect on the lies they have told each other as well as the lies they’ve told themselves, can any of them emerge from the carnage unscathed?

VENUE: Theatre Upstairs, Lanigan's Bar, Eden Quay, D1.

LEPER + CHIP, a new play by Lee Coffey, directed by Karl Shiels and performed by Conall Keating and Amilia Clarke Stewart.

Some people never go crazy… what truly horrible lives they must live.
In LEPER + CHIP the boy, Leper meets the girl, Chip. Boy meets girl in the middle of a battering, boy wrecks bus full of pensioners, girl gets chased by machete wielding maniac and love without madness isn’t love at all...

“The speed and precision of the performers, aided by minimal, emphatic design, make a breathlessly exciting 45 minutes.”
    -Peter Crawley, The Irish Times

"Its sharply written, neatly constructed, and brilliantly performed by Conall Keating and Amilia Clarke Stewart. Shiels appears to have wrung every last performative drop of sweat from these two vibrant young actors who hurl their story in our face without a shred of energy in reserve, and with endearing force, speed and feverish elan."

"The combination of the script and the actors’ performances created moments of pure hilarity in Leper and Chip’s dark world of murder, beatings and alcoholism. Here Shiels, Coffey and company have created an unmissable feat that you can’t take your eyes off."

    Video sample :

Welcome to the mythical island of Mag Mell off the west coast of Ireland. An isle fabled for eternal peace and happiness is about to be rocked as the greed and materialism of the 21st Century collide with the ancient wisdom and beauty of Mother Earth.
    ...

A wild mix of dance, music, theatre and puppetry give expression to these whirling forces as they lead to a climax of transformation and ultimately redemption.

Theatrically captivating from the start, the show creates a carnival atmosphere - dark, dangerous and anarchic at times, light, happy and delightful too. Humour abounds! There is no time to think as you enter a mesmerizing world of music, colour and rhythm and become absorbed by a thrilling story that unfolds with originality and imagination.

Walk into this new and exciting landscape that is the result of a unique collaboration by Jon Kenny (actor), Des Dillon (artist), Benny McCarthy (musician) and Conal Ó Gráda (musician).

The show is presented by Whobeganit Theatre Co. Ltd., founded by Jon Kenny (actor & comedian), Des Dillon (artist & puppeteer), Benny McCarthy (accordeon player & composer) and Conal Ó Gráda (flute player & composer).

They are joined by Colm Murphy (renowned bodhrán player), Ciaran Ó Maonaigh (fiddle player & TG 4 Young Musician of the year 2003), Caitlín Nic Gabhann (concertina player & award winning dancer from Riverdance) and Katie Holly (actor & singer/songwriter).

    Hello All!

Just a quick post to let you all know that our play 'Click' by Michael Collier is currently running at The Viking Theatre, Clontarf, Dublin 3 until 21st June.
Tickets are only 10 euro & booking is open now by calling 087-1129970

Below is a little info about the play & I have included our promo video!
    Hope to see you there!

"How do you get men to talk about their feelings? Simple: Threaten them with death.

On a fishing trip to Croatia, Pauly and Jacko, stroll through a field when Pauly hears a click. Panicking that he has just stepped on a defective land-mine left over from the war he stands rooted to the spot afraid to lift his foot. As they wait for rescue talk turns to life, love, limbs and what it means to be a modern man. As the hours pass not only are their lives in jeopardy but so is their friendship as buried secrets threaten to destroy everything.

Click is a dramatic comedy about two lifelong friends trying to survive. On the surface Pauly and Jacko are your average mates. They go fishing together, or have a pint and talk about football. However when they are put in a life or death situation the truth of their relationship comes out. Is it all banter and no substance? Their past has joined them together but is their present connection really as close as it seems. Click explores the nature of friendship, specifically male friendship and asks whether it is superficial or just unspoken. If you have helped each other through the darkest hours do you really need to talk about them? Click combines the wit of a Dublin Bus driver with an exploration of the difficulties of being a modern man.

“Collier has a soaring touch with dialogue that calls for helpless laughter as often as it hits you in the stomach” – Emer O’Kelly, Sunday Independent

“… a tightly constructed two-hander that exploits its novel dramatic situation to full comic effect.” – Dr. Ian R. Walsh, irishtheatremagazine.ie

    Written by Michael Collier
    Directed by Caroline FitzGerald
Performed by Aidan Crowe & Ciarán Kenny"

    Reckless Theatre Presents
in association with the Corks Arts Theatre

Dog Sees God: Confessions Of A Teenage Blockhead
    Directed by Louise Barry
    Lighting Design by Jamie Feehily

    Venue: Cork Arts Theatre
Dates: Wed 25th June - Sat 28th June.

Dog Sees God returns for 4 nights only to the Cork Arts Theatre a year after their sell out run before they transfer to the International Youth Arts Festival in Kingston Upon Thames in London.

What would happen if the PEANUTS gang grew up? Our beloved comic strip characters are re-imagined as hormonal teenagers with serious issues.

When CB's dog dies from rabies, CB begins to question the existence of an afterlife. His best friend is too burnt out to provide any coherent speculation; his sister has gone goth; his ex-girlfriend has recently been institutionalized; and his other friends are too inebriated to give him any sort of solace. But a chance meeting with an artistic kid, the target of this group's bullying, offers CB a peace of mind and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits. Drug use, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion and sexual identity collide and careen toward an ending that's both haunting and hopeful.

“This show is special, everyone needs to see it.”

"...was astounded by the show and the cast as they brought to life in, at times, entertaining manner but always with a clear message, what today is like for teenagers/young adults using characters that people could relate to and see how they changed when a certain age hit... an enthralling show..."

Suitable only for 14+. Contains swearing.

Early booking is advised. Tickets: €15; €12 conc., Groups of 5: €50

Neil +1 is a unique improvised theatre show starring Neil Curran and a random audience member. Completely unplanned and improvised, an audience member is invited up on stage and becomes a leading performer in the show! There are no tricks, plants or gimmicks; everything is made up on the spot. What unfolds is a journey into an alternative life of the audience member, through character, scenes and narrative. Both hilarious and touching, witness improv and theatre like you have never seen it before!

    Tickets available from: http://www.milltheatre.ie/shows/neil1

    “Such skill, hilarious! 5 stars!”
    - Daniella Moyles, iRadio Presenter

“Funny, engaging, and mind-blowingly skilful. One of the highlights of this years’ festival”
    - Dave Bourn, ImproFestUK

“A member of the audience was invited up on stage to take part in an improvised story. This sounds like a high-risk concept and perhaps it could go wrong on the night, but Neil and his guest were superb. And the uncertainty of it all, the possibility of failure, adds to the drama.”
    - Dave Madden, DublinCulture.ie

“Improvisation is about confidence, trust, support and taking risks…all while being funny. Now imagine doing that with a total stranger. I found the entire show to be engaging and hilarious but what was really spectacular is how Neil made a non-improviser off the street, the star. The way he was able to support everything and at the same time keep the show funny and interesting was pure mastery. For a truly unique experience, I highly recommend this show.”

No Strings Attached Theatre is a new independent theatre company and it, together with the Tiger Dublin Fringe festival presents, The Carved Soul.

The show features a life-size wooden puppet named Ollie. But forget everything you know about puppets. Ollie is old. Ollie is tired. Ollie is grumpy. Ollie is irritable. Ollie is frustrated. Ollie does not give a shit. This is a story about stories that takes place in the void between memory and reality. This is puppetry like you have never seen it before. Ollie is brought to life by third generation puppeteer, Jason Lambert and movement specialist, Claire Walsh. The pair’s collaboration was forged in the Lambert Puppet Theatre and is taking shape for the first time at Tiger Dublin Fringe.

    Sweeney-Todd-Teaser-Poster.jpg

Kilkenny Musical Society’s highly anticipated 2015 production of the classic Stephen Sondheim musical masterpiece “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” will be performed from the 12th to 18th of April 2015 at 8pm nightly in the Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny.

“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is a musical by Stephen Sondheim based on the 1973 play of the same name. The musical was first produced in 1979 on Broadway where it won eight Tony awards including Best Musical and remains one of Sondheim's most beloved pieces.

It tells the tale of London barber, Benjamin Barker. Torn from his family and exiled for 15 years on a miscarriage of justice, Barker returns home to a city as corrupt as when he left. Hell-bent on revenge after learning the agonizing fate of his wife and daughter, he assumes the guise of Sweeney Todd and takes up his razors to dish out a brutal recipe of justice with the help of the infatuated and enterprising meat pie maker Nellie Lovett.

The society are delighted to welcome back director Christine Scarry in her second show with the society, after directing last year’s hugely successful award winning production of “Michael Collins – A Musical Drama”.
Christine will direct a stellar cast that includes Kevin Reade and Sarah Brennan in the iconic roles of the tormented and vengeful barber - Sweeney Todd, and the entrepreneurial and amoral meat pie shop owner - Mrs. Lovett. They will be joined by David Doyle as Anthony - a naive young sailor - and Kevina Hayes as Johanna – Todd's long-lost daughter and Anthony’s love interest.

Ciarán Dunphy plays the flamboyant Italian rival barber Adolfo Pirelli, with Adam O’Brien as Tobias Ragg - Pirelli’s downtrodden apprentice.
The lecherous Judge Turpin will be played by Fergal Millar, while Alan Grant will play Beadle Bamford - a pompous public official who is deeply loyal to the corrupt Turpin. Delia Larkin will play The Beggar Woman - a deranged and schizophrenic woman who harbours a dark, surprising secret.

This magnificent cast will be supported by a 12 piece orchestra, a chorus of nearly 50, and the usual high standard production values associated with Kilkenny Musical Society performances.

Christine will be joined on the creative team by renowned musical director David Wray in his first show with the society. This production will also feature scenic design by John O’Donoghue, and lighting design by Gerry Taylor.

Hysterically funny yet chillingly intense, this soaring, heart-pounding musical tour de force will have you on the edge of your seat.

Prices are €15 from Sunday to Tuesday and €20 from Thursday to Saturday. The Society is also offering Group discounts for 10 or more at €15 per ticket.

    Box office opens 1st January 2015 – 056-7761674 or www.watergatetheatre.com.

    Tangled Stars Theatre Company
    Present
    Arthur and Esther
    Written by Ross Howard

In the wake of public spending cuts, Arthur wrestles with the methods set out in Montgomery Swank’s "28 Ways to Terminate Your Existence and Questions You May Have", the one book he has salvaged from the closure of his beloved library.

In the wake of her own death, his wife Esther reconciles the ghosts of the past with a hope for the future. This play of regrets and lost chances is full of both outrageous dark comedy, deep sincerity and ultimately a compelling night of theatre.

Starring two of Cork’s finest actors Kieran O’Leary (Othello, The Good Doctor and For Whom The State Doles) and Gemma Collins (Columbinus, The Gas Heart and Dog Sees God: Confessions of a TeenageBlockhead) in this elemental and affecting play of two worlds.

This exceptional story explores love, its loss, and the lives we inherit and impose on others.
