I used to frequent Ricardo's back in 89/90 when I was in Kevin St for a year.
While my mates played snooker I was on the arcade cabinets, I remember playing Altered Beast... not good....
The arcade in the students rest area in the college was great though, Gravitar, Jackal and Bubble Bobble installed there, a nice selection of games.

When I was in Kevin St in 93/95 the snackery had Street Fighter II(kerazy HK rainbow bootleg), MK,Lethal Enforcers , A sit down Final Lap II ,Black Tiger and one of those isometric rally car games.
Weird thing is , I'm pretty sure the weird Taito Mini cabs that a few of us have here (the ones that came from the cowshed in cork)were used there , if I remember correctly the guy who owned them leased them to colleges so it makes sense...

Does anyone remember the "Tallaght Sports Bowl". I was only ever in it once, I remember a big line of SF2's. Not sure what else was in there

lol my mates were too young looking to get into pubs so we basically lived there every weekend for a few years .
I remember SF2 , X men children of the Atom,Vapor Trail , MK II,a SNK with a few carts built in (Nam 75 was one), Wind Jammers,World Heroes, Midnight Resistance , Rad mobile,Final Lap twin,Vendetta,Simpsons,Sunset Riders,Mad Dog Mcree..
    loads more I've forgotten
Also some decent pinball , Adams Family , Star Trek 25th anniversary,ST TNG, and my favorite Lethal Weapon III.

Yup. Never seen them officially listed anywhere else or a photo of them outside Ireland , possibly they were a custom job?
I still have an unrenovated one in my mam's garage that I must either get to or sell on..

I left Kevin St and went off to do my nursing in Sligo, I can't remember much of an arcade there.
Oddly enough, there was a new night club/youff centre and they had the likes of SFII and MK, but the most popular machine was a Mega-Tech system, where kids who played Sonic at home would play it again in the arcade, but this time pay 20p per go!

Wow, as a LOVER of Genesis, I would love to own a MegaTech. The only one I ever saw was in either Bray or Skerries

I'm sure many of us crossed paths. I too was in Kevin Street in the early 90s, and spent most Saturday mornings at the arcade in the Sports Bowl, money or no money. Quasar used to have a league there too weekend mornings which was great craic.

When Leisure plex in coolock first opened it was great, downstairs eventually had some great early 3d games like ridge racer and Virtual Racing and virtual fighter, up stairs had R-Type 2, Tumblepop, Street Fighter 2, Konami X-men, crackdown, A Neo Geo multi system with FATAL FURY, Bowling, a Baseball game and Robo Army.

Barneys in Dublin was a bit grubby but it was where I first played Street Fighter 2 and Mutant Fighter which was a terrible game but it had fantastic graphics and sound design.

I went to Dundrum Bowl to play Q-Zar and their Aliens cab a couple of times.

But otherwise it was the arcade on O'Connell St, down where Marathon Sports was/is, Dr Quirkies probably came a little later.

I used to love Stunrunner and Temple of Doom there.

I grew up in Bray, my first job was in the change booth at Star Amusements in 1973 (I was 13). I spent my spare time playing pinball (Kings and Queens 1965 Gottlieb)

In 1976 Pat Quinn opened "Cool Pool" on Quinsborough road with Pool and Pinball

The original 8 pinball machines included these 5:

"Jubilee" & "Blue Chip" (Williams )

"Four Million B.C." & "Hokus Pokus" (Bally)

    "Jack in the Box" (Gottlieb)

In 1977 the first video games arrived:

"Datsun 280 ZZZAP" & "Amazing Maze" (Midway)

"Atari Stunt Cycle", "Sprint 2" & "Breakout" (Atari)

Then the new SS (Solid State) pinballs arrived in late '77, including:

"Evel Knievel", "Night Rider", "Captain Fantastic", "Aladdins Castle", "Wizard", "Circus", "Bow & Arrow" (Bally)

    "Big Indian" (Gottlieb)

In 1978 everything changed with the arrival of Space Invaders, and soon "Amusement Arcades" became "Video Arcades" with Defender, Galaxians, Tempest, Donkey Kong, Pac Man, Centipede, etc.

There was another "Cool Pool" in Drogheda, and a place called "International Recreations" in Rathmines.

Wow, that's some amount of info, thank you! Great to get these things recorded somewhere, I doubt many people remember that much detail from the 70s arcades in Bray.

My arcade days started in Waterford, early 80s through to early 90s. The old Savoy cinema (now Supermac) was an arcade upstairs with Zaxxon and Paperboy etc... a bit later there was Freds (now the Kazabar pub) which had Hypersports, Yie-Yar Kung Fu, Black Tiger, Star Wars sit down cab, Ghosts and Goblins and later on Golden Axe.

Around that time (late 80s early 90s) the other arcades in Waterford that I remember were: Jackpot next to Sinnots Records / Opposite the Woodman. All I remember there was the 4 player gauntlet. Then there was Pot Black across the road upstairs in what became Ruby's / The Foundary nightclub. Apart from Snooker, they were a favourite haunt at lunchtime from school and they had things like: Golden Axe, Side Pocket, Toki etc..

Sullys snooker club where City Square is now had a decent arcade selection too. I remember burning up a lot of 10p coins in their Salamander machine and the awful by todays standards Hard Drivin sit down cab. Later on they had some decent cabs like Space Gun with the dual guns etc...

The Bowling alley next to the RSC had a great couple of years between 91-93. It was where I saw Street fighter 2 for the first time. They also had chase HQ, Cabal (a personal favourite), a multi arcade machine (I swear a game like Sunset riders was on it), and this sit down driving cab that I can never remember the name of where you sit down and drive a yellow car, swinging left and right when motorcyclist enemies climb onto your car.

Throughout all of this Tramore was always there. The big outrun sit-down cab in strand amusements and the 4 player turtles cab, plus the World Cup 90 game that I could smash on a single 10p (or 2p if the slot was easy to "flick a two" into), the Sega rally and house of the dead machines at Freddie's, Wonderboy at pipers and the very first street fighter / Yie-ar / Star Wars sit-down again at Atantic.

By the time I moved to Dublin in 93 it was all about SF2 and the big G-Loc machine in Dr Quirkies. There was an arcade off the side of Talbot street that I forget the name of that had a Sega Rally and Daytona that took a lot of my money for a year too. Favourite day trips were Coolock Leisureplex to play Mortal Kombat and the Atari Expo thing down in Tallaght I think where they had a sit down Star Wars Arcade (the one like the version that came on the 32X). Omni park had a decent arcade too next to the cinema and I possibly half imagined it - but I remember one in the Virgin Cinema on Parnell Street that had cab versions of PC games like Rise of the Triad - I have a vague memory of it (or another game) being actually virtual reality i.e. requiring a headset.

I haven't ever seen any photos of any of these places. There are no arcades in Waterford now and probably haven't been for 2 decades. Still some bits out in Tramore but its mostly slot machines now. No idea what the situation is up in Dublin, whether any of these places still exist ?

Century City was the name of the one by the Virgin cinema, incredibly well stocked with recent cabs at the time, now it is all bricked up.

The arcade in Santry is a gambling machine den now.

Off Talbot street, that would be Barneys, they had a lovely 4 player X-Men cab just inside the door, as well as the first Super Street Fighter II cab I saw with that awesome attract mode with Ryu!

Dublin Airport had a great range of cabs in the 80s, included a sit down deluxe Outrun cab.

Century City was still on the go until relatively recently (last time I was there was like 2013) as it never really stopped being a popular spot for pool. Kinda surprised it packed up as it seemed very handy for its market.

That whole mall went down the toilet, it's just a big corridor with all of the units blocked up, only the entrances to the street, carpark, cinema and back doors to a couple of bars/restaurants remain.

    Just no traffic, I suppose.

They tried to find a market in an area that is only becoming more popular now.

Stringfellows was there as well! No cheap thrills any more, it has been replaced with a Euro shop... so maybe just a different kind of cheap thrills!

It's a shame about Century City alright, I used to stop in any time I'd go to the cinema for a few games of Time Crisis and Initial D.

What arcades still exist these days? The only one I can think of apart from Token is Bray Bowl. Which is unfortunately mostly ticket type game machines since a recent refurb.

Does Dr. Quirkey’s have any games left or is it all gambling?

  • Registered Users Posts: 120 ✭✭Wikidy

Leisureplex in Blanchardstown still has an arcade.

Quirkey's is unfortunately all gambling now, I walked in there recently to get quite a shock unfortunately.

We'd a decent enough arcade in Mallow called Griffins was your usual dark smoke filled arcade but good selection of 80's cabs. Shop beside our school has a couple of cabs are well in a back room so plenty of skipped classes due to Cabal & Double Dragon sessions.

Used to go to Perks whenever we were in Youghal (used to go the greyhound racing fairly often), they had a great selection of machines there for years.

There was a few in Waterford RTC as well, these we're probably the last ones I played in the wild..

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,911 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

Bob's in Skerries still had some machines apparently, though I know they recently did a clearout.

  • Registered Users Posts: 790 ✭✭✭dav09

Bob's was a special place. I have a bit of a story with it for sure and it's a shame it seems to have closed since. I went up there while passing by in 2019 and got speaking to the owner who showed me around, had been speaking with the guys&planning level up around that time + had only just started collecting myself for a few months.

Long story short I first visited in July 2019, I was told pretty much nothing was for sale but could have a Goliath about 8/900 I believe, and a small few others maybe but for crazy money, just or one or two other cabs but for 1500-2k minimum, very little working out the back. I know a few others attempted the same and got the same answer. They said they might be open to a bulk sale but they were speaking to a few guys in the UK so they told me figure out something fast. I decided to go back and see if I could get a deal on something I wanted, I visited the place a month later, only this time it was a lot different, the right hand side was completely empty and stripped of the gambling equipment (you can guess the reason) but long story short when I returned almost everything was suddenly for sale if I had the money. Unfortunately didn't have much money at the time, one of the guys just about managed to buy 20 Goliath's out of about 60/70 I believe. The UK guys got word of us getting Goliath's and were over in a flash, was hoping to buy a game or two but it all happened too fast before I could raise the funds so got nothing out of there unfortunately. I mentioned it to a good few of the collector's that I knew here at the time but again the same thing happened or they weren't interested, one or two got a small few cabs like I know the Punch Out but a real pity more of them cabs couldn't have stayed on these shores which I really tried my best to make work, had I thought this would have happened so fast I would maybe have done things differently but wasn't aware how things happened at the time, within a week or so after the second visit the guys were on their way over if I remember correctly. I would say they still have cabs if people want to buy them as I'd say they had 200 cabs or more and told me they scrapped tonnes too over the years, Andy and his crew couldn't possibly have taken everything. They also had cabs at mosney apparently still and I believe Andy got a few from there (a Atari TX1 for sure).

Super special place, but with the current "retro boom" I suppose in hindsight it was inevitable, eventhough I know the continued to operate for quite some time after and kept a lot of cabs for themselves to keep going. They seemed to like the idea of operating a retro arcade and for people to come back and visit the games they liked from their childhood.

Stumbled upon Bob's completely by chance while coming back from Ardgillan estate circa 2018/9ish — ran in for a bottle of Coke and ended up back in 1994. Shame it's packed up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 771 ✭✭✭Sir Random

As of 2023, Bray Bowl has one Star Wars (Pro) pinball machine, and a pair of sit-on bike video racing games.

Star Amusements only has games to win tokens/prizes, and a big casino.

I thought Bobs was leveled now. Nearly sure my brother said he was out there recently and it’s knocked down.

There was a surprisingly decent selection of cabs in the ferry booking office on Arranmore Island (Donegal) in the 90s, and until the mid '10s actually - but I can't find any photos of the inside

I'd forgotten just how much money I'd spent on Tekken until I played it again in Token and got through quite a few rounds on my first token - obviously some ingrained memories!

Fairly sure there were SF2 and Time Crisis cabs also, all a little careworn by the time they got out there. Most pubs/chippers had those counter top poker cabinets back then also
