Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hopefully 2019 we will see buckets in the ground for the next section. Does thread title need an update to keep post here about Phase 2 or should a new thread be started ?

Thread title updated to reflect overall scheme - good to see the N52 being upgraded by stealth - 6km is a nice chunk.

Ever since the economy recovered these realignments seem to be getting longer - looking at some ~10km realignments on the N56 and N86 shortly - won't be long doing big stretches then.

It would be great to see the entire length of the N52 from Nenagh to Ardee ( i know technically Dundalk) ungraded. One thing on the upgrades in fairness to Westmeath County council is they have being upgrading from the offaly county border to Delvin over the last 15 years which is brilliant but meath county council haven't done a tap on the section of the N52 (apart from the kells bypass built with the M3) that runs through county meath. Considering they have some of the worse sections of the N52 why have they not done any work. Is it a lack of funds over the last 15/ 20 years or is it because its north of navan and they dont care?

The real problem is that MCC feel that the Regional Roads are their responsibility and roads like the R150, R161 and R154 have seen considerable investment. The National Roads like the N52 are IMO seen as the responsibility of the TII given that it’s of no real significance to Meath - they seem to take a different view regarding the N51 Navan to Slane - it is locally significant. The book stops at the road numbering system - the National Secondary Roads are in no-man’s land where they’re on the TII’s list of lower priority and yet beyond the responsibility of local authorities in terms of significant investment. Many of the strategic NS routes like the N52, N55, N61, N62 and N80 etc. should be reclassified as National Primary Routes - the N52 itself could be renumbered as the N33.

There's no "feel" there, the responsibilities are split that way.

It's being 6 or 7 years since I worked on a road project so my memory is a bit hasy . Can you still start archeological work before the fence line is up or do you have to wait now for the fence line to be erected for insurance reasons?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭cgcsb

I sometimes have to do a Tullamore-Belfast drive which can be a right pain, I've tried a few different ways including via the M50 and three tolls, via Navan is a good one but it's also a very poor road in places. A proper N52 for the whole length would be a god send.

TII dont want motorists getting ideas there is further good road after Turin

There was a stop-go on the Billistown end yesterday to allow workers to survey the area around the crossroads at that end. Looks like Westmeath CoCo are pushing on with bits and pieces they can be doing while tendering bigger stuff.

yeah it opened before Christmas, its on a bit of a go slow to finish for some reason, mainly just accommodation access roads, Fencing, one or two batters and landscaping still to be done. The fact that TII/WCC have let certain sections of the road open this long with out safety barrier has got me thinking maybe they have being penny pinching and they are not going to erect them.

Still no safety barrier as of yesterday and just a few guys about snagging stuff.

The road looks fairly well finished off since i traveled the route last (except for safety barrier mentioned already)

I'm not usually overly worried or vocal about safety items missing as I'd be the one saying "if they kept their eyes open they wont need them" :) but I am very surprised by the lack of barrier on this route. They have built up the road in one spot particular as you come East just past Cloghan Cross and there's a road down under you on the right and it doesnt take a lot to land down there. I cant see it been left like that but no sign of anyone doing anything at the minute about it.

I was in a NRDO office on semi official business last week and i asked where are the barriers in cloughan. I got told there where none as TII believe they cause more damage than they stop. So they are trying to phase them out in road design and have a more gental slope on a bank instead. They only problem is as you have seen in cloughan the drops are very severe. So somebody is not reading drawing correctly

Land purchase and advance works will likely be progressed in parallel with the tender process. I was surprised to see a tender appear this early to be honest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,859 ✭✭✭roadmaster

It looks like the advance works have started at the Delvin end of this project as a good few trees have being chopped and hedges pulled.

  • Registered Users Posts: 667 ✭✭✭BelfastVanMan

Will this be a clear run of good road, now, between Delvin and Kilcormac?

Strange that this road is getting mostly Type 1 SC upgrades, whereas the N55 is getting mostly Type 2 SC...

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but perhaps the longer-term aim of TII is to redesignate this road N33?

Would make sense, if it were to become a National Primary, to have better standard SC than a National Secondary, for example.

Hopefully, they done a super job on the 1st new road so hopefully be the same here, them narrow twisty parts of the road around Turin are a nightmare

Delvin to Birr iwould be good road.

Though Birr needs a bypass of the N52/N62, hopefully extending past Riverstown. That would just leave the very poor section just before Borrisokane.

N52 Cloghan-Billistown Phase 2 awarded to Fox Building & Engineering

    https://irl.eu-supply.com/app/rfq/publicpurchase_frameset.asp?PID=138268&B=ETENDERS_SIMPLE&PS=2&PP=ctm/Supplier/PublicTenders

    €12m should start soon.

Props to BelfastVanMan for the scoop above. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 667 ✭✭✭BelfastVanMan

Seems Fox's are slowly but surely rebuilding the National.Secondary network single-handedly! :-P

In all seriousness, though, should be a good job, and will plug the gap nicely between the upgraded parts south of Devlin and south of Turin Cross.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,859 ✭✭✭roadmaster

It will be good road nearly all the way from delvin to birr which will be fantastic. As mentioned above Borrisokane is in bits i dont think i drove on a surface as bad

Passed here yesterday and was surprised to see diggers and all heavy equipment in already digging road path. Anyone know a timeline when it is due for completion?

It’s good enough land with no structures of note to be built and nearly all off line I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s opened in 15 months

Went by this project this morning the contractor is ripping through it. Capping is already down in places. If we have a good summer and Autumn along with the works staying the same pace I can see this road being open early spring

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,859 ✭✭✭roadmaster

Drove by yesterday good progress being made probably an early spring opening now. Does any one know when this is complete does WCC plan to improve the N52 between Delvin and the MCC border?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,859 ✭✭✭roadmaster

Passing by this project yesterday it seams to have slowed to a crawl with not much work on the last few weeks. Any reasons for this slow down?

Any updates on this project? It's visible on Google maps and it looks de facto complete.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,859 ✭✭✭roadmaster

Litterly they are just tipping away probably October opening the way it's going. They didn't stop work during the lockdown. It seems it's the same carry on as the last phase

Why are they being so slow?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,859 ✭✭✭roadmaster

I'd say lack of funds maybe. They probably loaded there prelims at the start to get as much money early on that could have been used to finish another job. Sort of robbing Peter to pay Paul

It is a very important cross country route it insects a lot of major motorway, hopefully Delvin to Kell's will get some upgrades as well
