Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Coming in to winter now. Always love checking out this forum as it gives me some inspiration on what I'd like to do when I come home to Ireland in the future for a visit. I'm thinking of visiting the highest points of each County in Ireland, but doing it self-propelled by bike to get between them. Living in Canada makes the distances needed to travel in Ireland seem so small.

The last few months have seen exceptionally clear weather in these parts so I got a lot accomplished. I always extend the invitation, if you're visiting the West of Canada shoot me a message, I'll take you on a hike up a local mountain here, in exchange for stories from back in IE. Fair deal eh?

Not much in the way of crisp shots like the rest of ye. Any tips? Just a compact camera here, avoided auto, think it was landscape mode here.

South Kaibab Trail, Grand Canyon, Dec 2013.

Went on a bit further beyond Skeleton point and made a friend I'm still in contact with. Things got very bad after 1:30pm as the forecasted snow storm kicked in, which made for a challenging back half of the return leg. Alas, I don't have any pics beyond #3, so that's far from the full extent of it. Blizzard, strong winds, snow, cold...probably the toughest hike I've done ~ 5 hours down and back, but just the sheer grunt work in those conditions. Was armed with appropriate layers. Really glad I did it, though, I was the only one from the group who did, i.e., only one not hungover. :pac: We got back to car park and they had closed it, so my friend had to call the Ranger/Park service to let us out.

    I want to go back.

for nice clear images just play around with your settings. two main functions shutter speed(how long your sensor is exposed to light) f or aperture(amount of light exposed to sensor for your shutter speed) just think of your camera as your eye squinting is like closing the aperture so less light getting in. i used to be crap at taking pictures then i started fooling around now i take pictures like this one below.for nice clear images just play around with your settings. two main functions shutter speed(how long your sensor is exposed to light) f or aperture(amount of light exposed to sensor for your shutter speed) just think of your camera as your eye squinting is like closing the aperture so less light getting in. i used to be crap at taking pictures then i started fooling around now i take pictures like this one below.https://dl-web.dropbox.com/get/Camera%20Uploads/IMG_0951.JPG?w=AAD52g0FL9eZFETBcY3jX-9J8JekLdPwCGSae_y8J8LiNQ

I've not done it but I would imagine that you, copy the image URL or image location that you choose when you right click on image. Then use the 'Insert Image' button on the boards message options and paste it in.
These instructions are for Windows OS.
Wouldn't know how to do it on Android or Apple devices.

    Where is this? Scotland?

No, between Curved Gully and Howling Ridge on Carrauntoohil last Sunday. The fellow who was doing all the hard work leading the way, and taking the photos - the good climber! - tells me its An Cumar Dheis or "the Lick".

You can see Cummeenoughter to the left of the first one.

@Conor74: love seeing pictures like that from Ireland.

Haven't been doing much mountaineering this season in Canada. It's been one of the worst years on record for avalanche danger on the West Coast so all objectives got paired back to conservative affairs.

Been doing a lot of backcountry ski touring. Looking forward to the Spring mountaineering season.

Looking for conservative lines to ski in complex terrain. We experienced a loud "whumpf" in the snowpack shortly after this photo as we transitioned into the alpine. These occur when the snowpack is extremely unstable and settles suddenly under the weight of a person moving across it. We retreated and found some well anchored tree runs to ski. Scary moment.

    301861.jpg

Beauty of a ski line, blower powder snow, mellow, low avy slope. Makes all the effort worth it.

Yep, snow in the 2nd photo but rain clouds in the first photo on the arete.
Coming from the arete side we hit snow only 100m from the summit.
On the tourist track, the snow started much earlier, 400m-500m below the summit.
The people in Nikes were struggling with traction :D

    Thought as much.

Good examples though as to why we need to be cautious when tackling hills and mountains; we don't know what they can throw at us at any given time :)

Not really, I had acclimatised well though, was in Chamonix, and Gran Paradiso the week before, weather was really unpredictable this summer though so softer snow made tougher going somedays.

I must head up there again soon, its a nice spot. The last time I was there, I didn't follow the road up towards djouce and just went for a cycle on the track between the two lakes.

That's it, with the cliffs of mini Lug' to the side.

There was a few boats in the water that day but the village didn't seem to be up yet. May be back on there this weekend so I'll have another look then. :)
Walked from Ballinastoe that day, I'll be driving up next time as it'll be with two friends that aren't into walking as much as the views. Haha
