Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Fox draw

    Round 5

Wins for Jacob, Mustakim and Stephen Moran

One draw correctly predicted today (3 pts), no landmines, so I have 4 points now.
I should have made some braver predictions evidently.
Hoping to catch up, I will try for tomorrow:

    Round 5.
Wins for Shane Melaugh, Peter Cafolla, Stephen Moran

Alas Lyons-Cafolla the draw was a landmine - won by the lower-rated player, so a deduction of 3 points drops you back to 1.

I have you on 11 points, not 17. Difference is the Jonathan O'Connor draw v Henry Li (actually won by the lower-rated player, so -3), the -3 for Alice to draw today.

Likewise, I have you on 3 points, not 9. Is it the unknown Moran win in round 3 which is the difference?

zeitnot, alicechristina, Retd.LoyolaCpt and anchor4208 have all posted their scores after the round, which agree with mine. So table after round 4 to follow now.

Thanks; I wanted to encourage you. It's not nice when everyone says you will lose.

Actually I was going to raise another point.
I think the landmine penalties should not apply when ratings are close - say 50 points or less between the players? As it stands I would lose 6 points if Jacob beats you but you are only 2 FIDE points higher than him.

Boards 13 and 18 are also quite close on rating today and this is liable to happen more and more towards the end of the tournament,

As per pdemp's recent analysis, maybe a higher-rated player with black should be counted as a lower-rated player if the rating difference is less than 50 points. And vice versa...

A fairly Foxy draw it was too... -2.5, better make sure of the half point.

Strange mistake from Paul in that game, can't imagine what he missed before playing B*f6

I think there's a danger of making the scoring too complicated. I can barely get it right myself as it is. Case in point -

Correct; mistake on my part. So you also score a perfect 18 and go clear at the top.

I think so long as the rules are the same for everyone, then the competition is fair. There's no need to be complicating it to rule on what exactly an upset is.

The organizing committee , me and my dog Jethro, will review the scoring next season if I haven't retired from chess before then :(

Since all my predictions were wrong again it doesn't really matter to me what the rules are (wooden spoon beckons again), but they do seem too complicated.

It should be simpler next time, more like the old Treble Chance on the football pools, if anyone remembers that.

Players should just pick (say) 5 games, not saying what result they expect.

Home wins (=High rated player wins) scored 1
Away wins (i.e. Lower rated player wins) scored 2
Draws used to score 3 but then they started to distinguish between score and no score draws,

For the tipping competition, draws should be 2 and "Away" wins maybe 4 or 5, perhaps a sliding scale depending on the rating difference.

Do me a favour Tim and tip my next four opponents to beat me!
We can stick with the present scoring system for this year, I will modify it next year. I scored 9 today, Fox to draw is always a banker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭Retd.LoyolaCpt

Making the Fox draw an illegal pick would be my suggestion (although it did win me the competition last time)

OK, before it's banned, I am picking a Fox draw for round 6.

I am still on 1 point I think. Need a boost.

Second pick, by special request of the management, is Alice to beat Peter.

Third pick: Tarun to draw with Conor Murphy.

Drew with S Brady in the last rd when I was needed him to for my first Irish ch, so he'll always be a Petrosian in my books :)
