Ben O'Connor for minor coach if rumours are to be believed

Glen 1-12 Newtown 0-14 FT. Poor enough game in very poor conditions. Newtown failed to take 3 great goal chances and Horgan had a penalty saved

  • Registered Users Posts: 936 ✭✭✭conor05

Granted conditions very very poor, but I can see why Cork have not won a Liam McCarthy since 2005, not a hard tackle in either match, soft tippy tappy hurling.
Ref blowing for every single contact between players.

The Cork SHC championship used to be warfare.

missed the end of the game but did Meyler have a go at the standard of refs in Cork?

Been like that for at least 25 years

I agree. If a Tipp or kilkenny club team played either side yesterday they would destroy both teams. Cork hurling isnt in a good place at the moment despite what people are saying.

It is common talk in Cork that the referees are too strict and as a result players are not used to the more physical game played elsewhere. The idea of all this strenght and conditioning is that players are ready for strong physical contact used properly to maintain possession, take possession and make space for distribution of the sliotar. Physical contact is not fouling. People want to see shouldering, blocking etc

Cork Hurling management teams just announced....

the Executive of Cork County Board is pleased to recommend the appointment of Kieran Kingston (Tracton) as manager of the Cork Senior hurling team for a three-year term, along with coach Ger Cunningham (St. Finbarr’s) and Diarmuid O’Sullivan (Cloyne). A full backroom team will be announced at a later date.

Pat Ryan (Sarsfields) will take the helm at U20 for a two-year term, joined by Donal O’Mahony (Bishopstown), Brendan Coleman (Youghal), Fergal Condon (Aghada) and Wayne Sherlock (Blackrock).

Donal Óg Cusack (Cloyne) has been recommended as Minor (U17) manager on a one-year basis for 2020, joined by Seán Óg Ó hAilpín (Na Piarsaigh), Tom Kenny (Grenagh), and further selectors to be appointed, one of whom will provide a link to the current under-age playing base.

With the pathway for the progress of younger coaches a major priority, the Executive also recommends the appointment of current U15 manager Noel Furlong (Carrigtwohill) as U16 manager for a two-year term, with Seanie McGrath (Bantry Blues), Niall McCarthy (Carrigtwohill), Ger O’Regan (St. Finbarr’s) and David Dorgan (Fr. O’Neill’s) as selectors.
All the above appointments are subject to ratification by the County Board on Tuesday night.

1 year term a bit unusual but great to see that generation being asked and putting themselves forward to get involved

I heard rumours that JBM was offered a 1 year term for the Minors but wanted more and wouldn't accept only 1 year.

I’d say it’s one of two things
    1. They want to start a cycle whereby coaches / managers move up with their team (assuming they are up to it); or
    2. They’re giving the lads a chance for a year to see how they get on
Either way great to see so many of the last All Ireland winning teams involved

Great appointments.I applaud the board for doing the right thing for Cork hurling. You know something with Frank gone, and the likes of Donal Og and Sean Og involved with the minors. It looks like after 10 years, we can finally move on from the strikes. It's about time this sleeping giant of a hurling county, wakes up again.

I like the look of the under 20 set up

Minor hurling is interesting. I wonder what went on with JBM not taking it due to the 1 yr term?

Still good to see the 2003-2006 group step up and cut their teeth in management

I’m not sure Kingston. I do not like to see a manager involved at this level who has a son playing on the team. Leaving aside Shane being on the panel i’m not sure he’s ruthless enough

The players wanted him back which isn’t a good thing really. He might too pally pally with the players

Then again I suppose it does depend on who he rounds out his management team with

    Great, brilliant, super, progressive
Whatever word you like. I'm talking about hurling here. Writing something has nothing to do with managing a team!

He made a mistake in writing that reference but we all make mistakes. I don’t remotely see it as a valid reason not to give him the job.

The one year term is strange and it would be helpful if it could be explained

Is it possible the 2020 u16 management will move up in 2021 to u17

Very surprised there is no Jamie Wall in the minor set up he did a great job with the u16s and should not have been overlooked.

I don’t see what Ger C will bring to the senior set up if his time in Dublin is anything to go by.

Ger seems to be a much better coach than manager.

On Cusack, there are two lads who know him far better than any of us ever will willing to share a dugout with him. Good enough for me
