I just tuned into Sky News and watched a story Sky News themselves created - which was Priti Patel didn't condemn Trump enough according to THEIR standards. After their initial interview with her they ran with a story about her in later updates. That's not the news, that's their spin/slant on things. The news is about what happened in the US not Patel. The news is not what SKY NEWS's opinion is on anything, unless you prefer for the media to think for you? Maybe you do.

Sky News has become largely unwatchable over the last 2 years since Comcast took them over.

BBC News is another channel that has deteriorated dramatically in the last couple of years.

Yes, nowhere like the standard it used to be.

I found the whole incident with Beth Rigby and Kay Burly being sacked temporarily most amusing and is a symptom of what's going on.

Particularly Beth Rigby who during the Cummings affair was one of the journalists who pushed and pushed the UK Gov to have him sacked, even during the Coronavirus briefings which weren't meant to be about general politics, but ended up herself flouting coronaviruses rules. Members of the public asked better questions that the journalists who just wish to drag everything down to party politics for their own reasons.

About the only thing on Sky News I watch anymore is Sky Paper Review, because in that set up they have to have opposing guests. But even there that seems to have been watered down a bit I feel.

Listened to Newstalk this evening. The presenter repeatedly referred to the 4 people killed during the storming of the Capitol.
One person was killed. Three others died but that. During previous BLM protests media outlets were reporting people dying during the protests, who had been killed. Buildings catching fire which had been torched. Subtle bias would be more tolerable. But blatant bias just increases scepticism.

That was CNN a few months ago.

This is no way a justification of the shameful actions that were witnessed in Washington yesterday...but when everyone is spinning all the time things spin out of control.

WE can only hope that this country doesn't spiral into a s##tshow but given recent events and the media landscape, it doesn't bode well.

Hypocrisy, great video., CNN as its sharpest! See its the Trump defenders rioting this time, so the daggers and blades are out for them. You can see the way biases influence the very same person to think differently about rioting and violence

And. I backed, the black American protests, last year. African Americans have legitimate grievances about policiing in America. Here, the republican election party has let down the peaceful protestors by not having a commission to resolve this election fraud problem. They were going to support Trump but gave up after people stormed the building. They forget they are put there by the people and the majority want to know did election fraud occur.

Republican party to there detriment has for decades supported fringe elements like the teaparty movement and the movements have just gotten bigger when Trump won the White house. These fringe elements are just a minority, the majority of 72 million that voted for Trump stormed no building yesterday and democrats need to remember that. Republican party let down the party supporters when the sided with democrats. Election fraud not just about Trump, it has wider implications for other elections.

Nobody has a crystal ball. We see now Trump has decided to call it quits (proper decision under the circumstances) and has thrown the rioters under the bus. Trouble from here on make no sense. It only happen if the militant elements are well organized and funded. Not seen much evidence they have the logistics to take over buildings and hold them. Trump militias are definitely a threat and can cause trouble... but how bad unknown,

I whether you expose secrets and election fraud in a peaceful way. It's now time to calm it all down and Biden supported media to begin the transition to forgetting about Trump. Calling for him to be thrown out like a stray dog, or arrested, hardly the best way to stop the madness. Biden in 14 days or so, not long. Chill out with the revenge.

Biden got real work to do now to convince people his right man for the job. His not coming in to do an easy job. Wish him the best, surprise me. If he fails, it be messy though.

Well Newstalk like alot of the Irish media is owned by none other than Communicorp , Denis O Briens company.
This is the same Denis O Brien who is good friends with the Clintons and has donated between $10 million and $25 million to their charity.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/us/trump-attacks-clinton-over-denis-o-brien-links-1.2809481
US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has turned his sights on Irish businessman Denis O’Brien as part of his latest attack on Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

Mr Trump published a statement late on Wednesday drawing attention to Mr O’Brien’s close ties with the Clintons and the family’s charitable foundation, to which he and his mobile phone company Digicel have donated between $10 million (€9 million) and $25 million (€22 million).

Mr O’Brien’s spokesman told The Irish Times that the businessman would not be responding to Mr Trump’s statement.

All news outlets are biased to varying extents. This is a historic fact. even compare the Irish Times to the Press.
It's unfortunate since the rise of the Tea party/Trump era we have allowed such things enable the festering growth of the fringe elements and their nonsense seeping into the public discourse.
The attack on capitol hill the other day is what the result is.

Always check a few different sources and draw your own conclusion.

Or maybe it’s to stop nutcases that use the app to communicate when trying to overthrow a democratically elected government. Although it is probably pointless as the nutcases will just move on to another app.

This thread keeps giving with the conspiracy theories.

I'm amazed they ever allowed it on the platform. It's a platform thats primary purpose is disseminating hate speech. The platforms already don't allow anything that could be associated with adult content so pretty logical that they wouldn't associate with a hate platform.

American news Networks just awful, PBS and NPR do a decent job of offering objectivity.

Irish News Networks seem quite neutral but astonishing lazy. Just in reference to their coverage of the Pandemic, it was a disgrace to see both RTE and especially Virgin Media F*** off a few days before Christmas, RTE had a skeleton staff on and Virgin media just gave up with no main evening bulletin for two weeks.

Irish newspapers seem neutral enough apart from devouring constant government leakage.

I see more deranged hate speech and support for violence on twitter that went unchecked than I have in my limited experience with Parler.

Don't waste your energy they can't see it!!

I see the "Walkaway" movement which I have to admit, had an influence on me, which was essentially a completely organic movement of former Democrat supporters posting videos and their opinions on why they are walking away from the Democrat Party has been removed by Facebook this week.

There wasn't a hint of anything remotely violent or subversive about these people, it was people from all walks of life, all races, all ages who were articulating their reasons why they walking away from the Democrats.

Indeed many of them observed how fulfilled they felt, that they left the hatred and tension they had experienced previously.

News channels are supposed to be objective, CNN and the cable network news channels aren't, they are subjective.
Its worked well for them, CNN ratings have surged this year.

'News' in the USA with CNN/FOX is almost skit news. It is based on sensationalism. Because they need to make money that way in a competitive market place as they are not state owned. It has to be sensationalist to be commercial.

In Ireland we have state owned channels like RTE and we should be thankful they are balanced in their dissemination of the news for the most part. The only time I remember where delivery of a News Item was extremely awkward for RTE was the death of Gerry Ryan. As it was one of their 'own' and the story was not wholesome, other channels had to give the real full story.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Twitter did not outlaw Trump for hate speech. Banned him, because his last posts on that site, would not concede the election, and accept Biden won. The also want to stop him delivering messages to his supporters online.

Introducing social media blocks for just Trump supporters so they will have no place to talk and gather. Which is a targeted thing lets be true to control the narrative.

Twitter also now know Trump out the door and can’t do anything. They hit him when he was down.

What shocking for me the nut bags online what to censor all opponents of the democrat party now. They seem to want 1984 but with them in charge!

Playing a dangerous game here since this Trump movement not fringe, his go huge support inside the country. The anti-trumpets don't seem to care. When men with beards and combat gear show up on the streets will they care then? Thirst for revenge makes them just as bad as Trump followers.

Even before social media existed, newspapers had editorial opinions.

Typically based on their owner's political compass.

It's impossible to escape from. Social media has merely accentuated the problem.

The truth exists - but it can be spun and manipulated.

I might see a police shooting as excessive. My wife might view the exact same incident as justifiable.

Threads like these are the reason Trump would have done a lot better in Ireland than people would like to admit.

"Don't trust the media, I'll tell you the real truth" has been a key driver of support for Trump, Brexit, anti-vaxxers, Bolsonaro, Gemma O'Doherty and pretty much all the other grim sh*t that has emerged in the last few years.

It's a weird paradox that the people who trust "MSM" the least are the ones who need it the most.

My statement was that Twitter will allow all sorts of hate speech and extremists so long as it doesnt come from those they percieve as opponents of their their corporate viewpoint. Last I checked a dictatorship thats sterlizing minorities was happily tweeting away but I suppose if they're not misgendering them then they're grand :D

Parler simply extends that same courtesy to all sides. Some people don't like that idea

Actually populist American conservatism wouldn't go far here.

American conservatives hate big government, they are passionate about it, they will never succumb socialists or fascists as a result.

We here in Ireland on the other hand love being subjugated by powerful authority...we drink whatever "our betters" pour down our gobs...for example, check out our history since independence.

Trump is no more an American conservative than he is a Somalian communist. He saw American conservatism as a bandwagon he could jump on for his own ends and he knew exactly what buttons to press to manipulate people. If he was in Ireland, he'd have a totally different message but the tactics would be the same and people would swallow it just as readily.

Trump convinced plenty of people that, despite being born into enormous wealth, the other guys were the elite. Despite all the sexual impropriety, he convinced plenty of people that he was a clean living Christian. He did that by shouting FAKE NEWS every time the Post or the NYT uncovered something else about him. And so many people have bought into the 'MSM is bad' doctrine that they went along with it.

Yes, Trump would do well here.

Just a quick one, Former. Let's stay away from America for the moment.

Do you think Simon Harris got grilled enough while he was head of the dept of health? What about Leo? Do you think there's a link at all between journos being hired as special advisors and the coverage FG got in particular? Do you not think its odd that the fact that Leo went on national TV, said NPHET were overly cautious, then we have the highest cases ever, and this is rarely mentioned? This isn't about being allowed to say x y z, this is the overwhelming low level messaging being repeated ad nauseum that people are now starting to question.

Norma Foley keeps repeating "schools are safe" despite the fact that we have given up contact tracing for the moment and our ICUs are full. No one ever says "eh no, you're wrong", she is allowed that soundbite without recourse. I find that very odd. That's what most people are complaining about.

Must take a lot of energy to broadcast back in time to the 1930s!

On the topic at hand, yes RTÉ have a definite lean towards twitter style wokism (running articles about diversity and "being an ally" etc.) but most of their news stuff is alright.

Somehow they are simultaneously government mouthpieces but also cheerleaders for the far left, despite the far left being the county's most vocal government critics.

I also find accusations of bias hard to take from people who see bias everywhere (I mean left and right). For example this week we had the events in the US capitol. There wasn't a news service on earth that didn't cover it extensively with detailed accounts, commentary, how it reflected on Trump etc. Allies and enemies of the USA were all in unison at how poorly it reflected on the state of America under Trump. Yet still we had people here somehow accusing RTÉ of biased reporting on the event. Should they have been more sympathetic to the rioters or what?

The BLM riots in the US caused 2 billion dollars worth of damage.
Thousands of innocent people had their homes and businesses destroyed.
    Their livelihoods were ruined.

Cities burned for weeks, innocent people were beaten up, police were attacked, people were killed.

But the media repeatedly informed us that this was mostly a peaceful protest.

The same media that were up in arms on Wednesday, at the horror unfolding in Washington.
What would people looking on around the world think of the US, protesters invading the Capitol, like something you would see in a third world country, how can this happen in America ,they wailed.

7 months of rioting ,looting, arson, murder, incitement by BLM and Antifa what exactly was that if not something you would see in a third world tin pot dictatorship.

    Double standards, hypocrisy.
How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while there is still a beam in your own eye?

Boarding up city centre's on election week is something you would see in a 3rd world tin pot dictatorship, if what was witnessed on Wednesday proves to be the only notable incident of violence then it could have gone a lot worse for the US...remember the disgraceful scenes after the 2016 election....most don't!!!

The police cleared it in early July at the Mayors order.
The mayor’s executive order came in response to a wave of nighttime violence in the four-block area, including four shootings, 2 deaths, arson, and several alleged sexual assaults.

Funny how I didn't see that, but I heard all about it being set up.

Really? A quick google found numerous articles on it being shut down.

    Two quick examples.

I think it's interesting that it was allowed to happen in the first place!

'News' in the USA with CNN/FOX is almost skit news. It is based on sensationalism. Because they need to make money that way in a competitive market place as they are not state owned. It has to be sensationalist to be commercial.

Yeah, that's what it used to be, sensationalist. But now it has taken an ever worse turn imo. I'd love it to go back to simple sensationalism because then they wouldn't favour any particularly newsworthy item over another.

I don't think they are balanced. Outwardly they look like they are balanced but they are not. It is so easy to manipulate the news. All you have to do is ignore some subjects and promote other ones.
