Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If the new faction is handled like the Federation it should be cool but a grindfest to level up like the Klinks have would be rather boring imho.

I'd almost come back to the game just to get me some D'deridex action.

anyone who's still playing part of any decent fleets? ive just gone back to it for the first time in about 2 years, since before it was sold or went free to play. i'd never progressed very far - just to Lt Commander. looks to have been a lot of decent changes, so just getting my head around them at the moment. fairly casual player, wouldnt be spending huge amounts of time or anything so not interested in a hardcore fleet - just some people to team up with the odd time, if there's any recommendations?

One of the bigger fleets, Jupiter Force is fairly casual friendly last i heard, I'ld suggest my own but we're not entirely active as a group at the moment. Probably wont be until the new Rom faction comes out.

I have started playing this but was a little annoyed that i have to reach level 25 before i can play as a Klingon. Is there an easier way to do this by buying a pack or something ?

That will change on tuesday with the launch of the romulan exapansion(free), the KDF will be given a 1-50 mission ark, explained here.

Speaking of which - launch trailer

nope, its to stop what happened on launch night, the interaction lag was so bad it was taking 20-30 min just to equip a ship, easy way out is to become a gold member, my starting place in the 24k que last night was 6

    Might go gold tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Monty - the one and only

just a heads up before you do, que times for gold members were upto 30min after 9:30 pm last night

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭Venom

Have to say I'm really liking the Romulan faction. The missions and level earned ships are so much better than the Fed and Klink stuff. One thing tho the voice over work is still pretty god dammed awful and Denise Crosby's work is really bad.

I went gold over the weekend , am currently enjoying my new ship. I got a ship like Voyager, i then did a mission which gave me an enterprise type ship, which i am not liking.
Had no problems getting on either, i was right in all over the weekend. I have suffered a few glitch missions though .

The ambassador class, like all cruisers takes quite a bit of getting used to, with the slow turn rate. If you need any help, if Im on just gimme a shout @revenis

Is the Defiant class any good do you know ? I have seen them about, just not sure what they are like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Monty - the one and only

Each ship falls into a different class, escort, cruiser or science.

Escorts, like the defiants generally are glass cannons, high turn rates with alot of forward facing firepower but are squishy as hell. est armed with dual cannons/heavy dual cannons.

Cruisers, like the galaxy class, tend to have slower turn rates, more often than not, these will be the tanks. Usually best armed with beam arrays.

Science, tend to be hybrid ships of the above, they have by default a higher shield modifier aswell as the ability to target ship subsystems.

There is a 2 other classes, Carriers and Warbirds, both sides have access to carriers, but depending on the type, depends on how they are outfitted.

Warbirds, have the 3 main classes... but bewarned the turn rate on the bigger ones is comparable to carriers... (ie they dont turn, the universe turns around them). Alot of people are complaining about this, however its fine, the romulan battle cloak gives a massive turn rate increase ( from 4.2 to 20+)

One main thing, never mix and match different class of energy weapons eg phaseer, disrupter, plasma and so forth. For each different type that you have equiped, you loose -5 weapons power pershot. There are exceptions to the rule, with hybrid weapons.

    [edit]
Addtionally ships lean towards what class of character you have, tacticals tend to go for escorts, engineers for cruisers and science for science, that is not to say that you cant choose anyship, at higher levels, there are hybrid ships.

for example cruisers for feds, you'll get a choice of either a star cruiser or sovereign class ship, one is slotted for engineers, the other leans more towards tactical.

To put it simply, the ship you fly is purely based on how you like to play

Just to add a little to what Monty said.

    1) The basic Galaxy is just a crap ship tbh and the Defiant is a much better ship choice at that level. I reckon alot of the Defiant's you are seeing are the T5 and fleet versions of that ship tho.

    2) Remember you can replay past missions for more level appropriate gear as the rewards level up with you.

    3) Use the Doff system as soon as you can as the chunks of exp while small do add up and are a very nice boost to leveling up your character.

    4) Mixing weapons is only an issue at max level imho so don't blow crap loads of credits on gear from vendors or the exchange that you will very soon outlevel.

I did find the leveling to be quite easy to be honest. But i will check out the Doff system.

I have been picking up alot of LockBoxes too, are they worth anything ? I see you have to buy a key. But i am not too interested in spending anymore money on it to be honest.

The Doff system is an extra way to get Dil, Boff's, Doff's, rare gear and most importantly instant travel. Leveling up diplomacy grats extra transwarp locations. Rare Doff's can also give major bonuses to both ground and space skills.

The very rare items from lockboxes in general require a hell of a lot of keys (60-100) to get and it really depends if you really must have the ship in question. The rare and lower drops can always be found on the exchange for very little credits tbh. Saying that some of the best ships in the game stat wise are lockbox only drops.

You can try selling the lockboxes on the exchange but its more hassle than its worth imho as credits can be farmed way more easily.

Right, I've just realised you're talking about the Duty Officer Systems and not a Star System called Doff. I was trying to find it on the maps. :o

Anyone else got any nice beginner tips?

I played this game briefly ages ago and then as now I'm a bit befuddled with what I supposed to be levelling/aiming towards.

I picked a Romulan tactical char but not really sure what I'm doing re equipment/levelling etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,294 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

Im the same went fed tactical but really just plodding along doing missions and picking up dilithium. No idea what weapons i should be going for that are best suited or if i should be crafting everything

I'll dig out a few guides when I get home from work, but the one thing I will say, don't bother with crafting, it's not worth the hassle.

    Have you tried pvp?

You are kind of right though, I'm omly really interested in the fighting, and the novelty of doing so in the various ships from the shows.

Really? Do you mean because you're not using the accompanying module which provides a boost for said weapon type or just in general using different types of weapons lessens their effectiveness?

I always thought I was being clever having multiple weapon types, only choosing the ones which do the most damage also thinking different enemies would be more vulnerable to different types of weapons so best to have a bit of variety.

in general, though i do have a couple of builds that can handle the power reduction for 2 types of weapons, on ships. On the ground this makes no difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,294 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

Up to lvl 33 and still really enjoying this, sticking to phasers as my weapons on my ship and loving the speed and ridiculous turn rate of my defiant glass cannon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Monty - the one and only

Large update coming on thursday, lots of bug fixes apparently along with the new dilithium mining outpost for fleets. Which has some nice shiney upgrades for ship. :)

I hadn't played this in ages so thought I'd give the Romulans a whirl last night and I'm loving it again. I wasn't too mad on the klingons, and while I've only played a bit as a Romulan, it's a huge improvement. Were cloaking devices readily available for Klingon ships? I don't remember using them before, but they made for great battles last night.

Yup the Klingons had normal and battle cloaks from the start but lacked a ton of missions so leveling up was just grinding pvp and the few pve repeatable.

These updates are great, obsessively playing it for the past month, maxed out a Romulan tactical character so I started a Fed science officer for the first time, just made captain last night and got an Intrepid Class, loves it :D

Tempted to buy one, but think I'll wait till they (hopefully) go down in price.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 611 ✭✭✭Bigdeadlydave

Enjoying it myself, stopped playing a while ago but had bought the Excelsior class ship from the store which was cool, got promoted to captain and got the Galaxy class.... tbh I was expecting it to be cool but it only seem marginally (if even) better than the one I had.

    Are science ships any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

In combat, science ships cater for people who like to screw with an enemies electronics, jam their sensors, turn them on one another for example and kick their asses with anomalies like tyken's rift or gravity wells. Love those ;)

A lot of them, except for voyager, loek pretty crap though

So far I have just solo played, haven't communicated with anyone tbh, the game is very much enjoyable like this but I think I'm missing out a bit, just joined a fleet, dont wanna embaress myself to them, but what do fleets actually do? The one I joined seems good they say they have a starbase, embassy and a dilithium mine (dunno what these are/for lol)

I played a lot of WoW and ran a guild for a while, is it kinda the same thing? What do fleets do together?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

I haven't actually done anything with fleets! although I am a member of a few different ones :D

I have contributed to the construction of one starbase and dilithium mines are handy, mine dilithium to buy shiny stuff :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Monty - the one and only

All being in a fleet does for you, is, unlocks starbase defense/invasion missions in the group que. Of course doing these with coordinated groups will be far more rewarding than pugs. And depending on the level of the starbase depends on what extra gear you would have access to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭PirateShampoo

Other than missions how do u increase your rank?

Can you only rank up through missions or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Monty - the one and only

character rank can be increased through missions, fleet actions, pvp, and through the duty officer mission system(though this does not give out large amounts of xp)

starbase rank and the reputaion tiers are increased through completing associated projects

Gold member's have gotten in the last year...

a rather meh free faction specific starship
new costume bits in the tailor
faction specific spacesuits aka the one's you used to have to buy for zen

    Think that's it tbh.

Buying gold memberships at this stage is madness tho imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Monty - the one and only

Gold membership gives, costume sets, costume slots, shipslots, 2 faction ships per faction, pets, access to captains lounge(instance), automatic dil refining( can do 7 days if you havent logged on in that time, 99 billion credit cap, account bank slots and priority queing.

All but the last four depend on veterncy, and the prioity queing is the only thing that you cant keep unsubbed ( can pay to have the credit cap unlocked in the store)

Sorry for dragging up an old thread but it was either that or start a new one.

I'm considering getting STO and just wondering what people who've been on it for years think. are there many Irish people? is it newcomer friendly? It's free to play so i have nothing to lose but i'd still like some input. Thanks. :)
